Fausslandian Baseball Federation

I’ve been creating fictional leagues for some time… usually set in real places like the Unites Stated, or St. Lucia, etc. Here, I wanted to futz around with the world_default file, add a new country (by overwriting an existing one) complete with its own states, cities, and flag. To that end, I’ve created the Republic of Faussland (map to follow) as the setting of a new baseball universe that I will report on at a much quicker clip than I have with the Leopards or Pioneers. I’m thinking a preseason intro, a check-in before the draft, a look at the top 5 draft picks, an end-of-season recap, something more in depth for the playoffs… we’ll see how it goes.

A quick, high-level recap of how the Faussland Baseball Federation came to be…
First…

When the first wealthy businessman expressed his desire to create his own professional baseball association, local municipalities throughout Faussland put out statements calling the declaration heresy. In total, 27 of Faussland’s largest city governments took to local (and in some cases, national) radio and TV to decry the idea. In Norridge there was a parade. It was hastily put together, poorly organized, and was never formally named. There were at least, by my count, 7 different flavors of popcorn available at said parade. I tried 6 of them. Of those I tried, cinnamon sugar was my favorite.

Second…
The second wealthy businessman that expressed a desire to create her own professional baseball association did so during an annual shareholder meeting held in Dumfries. The company had missed their quarterly goals in 3 of 4 quarters. Most in attendance didn’t care about baseball. Her declaration was picked up by many of the same local municipalities and quickly put to rest by a forceful rebuttal that it would never come to fruition without governmental approval. The citizens of Dumfries seized on the opportunity to throw a parade. I’m told they had nine flavors of popcorn available for a small sum to attendees with money to burn. A young woman posted a picture of the parade (specifically that of a float designed to look like a halibut playing a trumpet with the hashtag #watermelonpopcorn). I’ve been unable to verify that they, in fact, did have watermelon flavored popcorn available for sale through any of my sources.

Then…
Three months later, when a fledgling national TV network, with nebulous corporate backing, expressed its desire to form its own regional professional baseball association, politicians, on behalf of the lobbying arm of the Local Municipalities Union, declared that it was illegal to do so. The Faussland Post-Intelligencer carried a story about a bill being proposed in the Senate that would ban the sale of flavored popcorn to minors (seemingly a move against spontaneous parading).

& Finally…
When said fledgling national TV network announced that, after a phenomenally successful round of funding, they would start a new professional baseball league, dubbed the ‘Fausslandian Baseball Federation’, with exclusive broadcast coverage available via their channel and its subsidiaries all the naysayers were forced to eat their words.

THIS IS HOW THESE THINGS START
First, it’s an idea. Completely innocuous when taken at face value and then dismissed once it is ripped from limb to limb by the naysayers. Those hateful haters. Second, it’s an idea that gets seconded. Again dismissed, but it’s begun to germinate. It’s out there, waiting to take root. Third, an entity with nebulous financial backing expresses interest. They are serious. Politicians start saber-rattling. They get overzealous, spread themselves too thin, and divisions among caucus members over the verbiage included in a bill that aims to ban the sale of flavored popcorn to minors reveals a foundation in need of masonry. Fourth, someone, or group of someone’s, who are among the first to reach trillionaire status, decide to invest. Because they can. Because they are bored. Because they have fond memories of a childhood spent at the ballpark. Of hotdogs. Fizzy pop. And, popcorn (probably caramel flavored).

Housekeeping:
League Structure: 2SL, 2D, 8T each with 3 levels of minor leagues that I will ignore for our purposes here.
We play a 154-game schedule. Only interdivision games with each division winner earning a playoff bid.
Each division winner makes the playoffs, the semi-finals and Faussland Series are each 7-game affairs.
There will be no DH… there’s no personal, political, or ‘but the past was better’ reason for this… I just didn’t check the box. Maybe I will someday.
We’ll use the 20 to 80 ratings scale with OVR and POT being values… and we won’t be showing any ratings > Max.
I adjusted to the trade sliders… ¾ filled to the right for both overall difficulty and prefer prospects.
I’ve not fiddled with the rules much – usually I open the option to trade draft picks, but not this time.
There is no ‘bonus trade period’. I’m not even sure what that is.
We’re doing an 15-round draft, no lottery.
Mid-80’s era stats output.

A look at the teams…

1999 Season (Leeward League Predictions)

The BNN Punditry, with no history to draw upon, have embraced their inner math nerd, taken all the appropriate (and some not-so-appropriate) measurements, crunched the numbers, and spat out their best guess for each of our two sub-leagues… and, if you’re inclined to believe them, it looks like the Pikeville Pirates & their top shelf offense should run away with the division crown in the Leeward East while Brunswick and Norridge appear set to duke it out over a place at the top of the pops in the Leeward West. I’ll be honest… while I agree, whole heartedly with their assertion that the Pikeville Pirates are the class of the LL East, I think they should re-crunch their numbers in the LL West, because Norridge is likely going to run away with it.

A look at their predictions:
Name: LeewardLeague.png

Pikeville Pirates
Offensively, these Pikeville Pirates are unparalleled in the Leeward League… and maybe, just maybe, in the entire Fausslandian Baseball Federation. Their lineup is a murderer’s row that will hit for power, average, and just about anything else you can think of. Defensively – they’re sound, great at the infield corners, with a right fielder whose arm should produce some legendary highlights. If there’s a gap here, a hole to fill, you could point to the pitching where Pikeville looks a bit thin, a bit pedestrian… it could end up being their undoing. I agree with the punditry – Pikeville will very likely win their division and represent the Leeward East in our inaugural playoffs… I just have a hard time seeing this staff carry them all the way to the promised land, and, if they manage to somehow make it all the way to the Faussland Series, I just don’t see many comfortable routes to victory.

Brunswick Patriots
Over in the Leeward West, the BNN pundits would have you believe that Brunswick is the class of the division – they’ve been measured, and weighed, poked, and prodded with the result, after running it through their top-secret formula multiple times, was the same… these Patriots should rule the roost. Should is, of course, the operative word. They look good – it’s true – and have all the things you look for in a winning club. A solid offense capable of running the score up every now and then with a staff that should finish in the Leeward League’s top five overall. This is to say that they’re solid everywhere, capable of temporary greatness here & there, and unlikely to make many mistakes over the course of our inaugural campaign. Will that be enough to win the Leeward West with the Norridge Whalers nipping at their heels? I don’t think so, but, then again, I’m not that great at math and I don’t even own a calculator.

Norridge Whalers
Listen… full disclosure, I’m a Norridge supporter. And, while my goal here is to play the role of impartial observer, to watch this world go by and to report on it as it does… there’s something about these Whalers. It could be their kits, a play on this set made by txranger, or this idea I have that Norridge, nestled neatly on Carosota’s inner harbor coast, is some old-school whaling town, lit by oil lamps with harpoons left outside most of the homes, and populated by crusty old sea captains with a hometown crowd that sings sea shanties during the 7th inning stretch. They boast what is likely the very best offense in the Leeward West and back it up with a tip-top pitching staff and defensive unit that will keep most clubs off the board. I don’t see how the punditry is picking Brunswick over these guys… If I were a betting man, I’d gather up all the loose change I could find in my couch, combine it with any coins I could scrounge up from under my car seats, and bet it all on Norridge.

1999 Season (Windward League Predictions)

Parity is the buzzword being tossed around by the BNN pundits where the Windward League is concerned with no less than 5 clubs vying for 2 playoff spots. First, in the Windward East, you have the Andalusia Giants and their outlandishly great pitching staff looking primed to run things in their division as they’ll pair an offense expected to produce the 3rd most runs in the east with said staff… followed, closely, by the Uniontown Blue Sox – hailing from the town that acts as Faussland’s gateway into the inner harbor – who will have a lot to say about who gets by them for the top slot, that is if anyone can. Meanwhile, in the Windward West, it looks like a 3-horse race with Dumfries, Blythe, and Marianna all expected to be in the mix this season – though, truth be told, I can’t see a scenario where Marianna finishes higher than 5th – Swarthmore & Westmorland both look better on paper to me.

Andalusia Giants
The Giants, whose magical (think rabbits being pulled from top hats, bending spoons, lusty ladies being sawed in half) staff should all but carry them to the playoffs, also boast an offense that can crack – with a knack for getting on base and for wrecking the basepaths once there. They should rule their division – that is, after all, what the prediction says… but, it’s important to note that their closest competition, the Uniontown Blue Sox, is no slouch either and should anything, and I do mean anything, happen to their starting rotation, we may see Andalusia sink like a stone.

Name: 1999_PreviewAndalusia.png
Views: 162
Size: 199.0 KB

Uniontown Blue Sox
The offense is legit, a near carbon copy of Andalusia’s – though Uniontown isn’t as crafty on the bases, a bit less aggressive strategically, and maybe not as adept at getting on in the first place – and the staff is a top two unit in the WL East (with the #1 slot likely belonging to the Giants). Their path to a division title may, more than luck, require a catastrophic injury to one of Andalusia’s top players – the reality for Uniontown, as I see it, is that they’re better than everyone else but not quite good enough to get over on the Giants… at least on paper, in practice, well, who knows – if a couple of guys improved significantly enough during Spring Training, maybe the Blue Sox will secure a low-key surprising playoff bid this year.

Name: 1999_PreviewUniontown.png
Views: 161
Size: 200.5 KB

Dumfries Miners
With a little bit of pop in their lineup, the two best hitters in the Windward League under contract, and a crackerjack staff that should finish in the top 5 of the sub-league, Dumfries is the sensible favorite to come out of the West. They check all the boxes, they’re well managed, have a front office willing to wheel & deal, and to throw a little bit of cash around, and have a rabid fanbase who makes playing in their park a particularly miserable experience. The problem they may have, however, is that those two hitters – 3B Tyler Mitts (28yo, 5*’s) and 2B Nathan Jones (32yo, 5*’s) are both unhappy – which is strange given that both are natural leaders. Of course, if they both are truly unhappy, then they may just lead this club astray, finishing the inaugural campaign a muddled mess that failed to reach its potential.

Name: 1999_PreviewDumfries.png
Views: 160
Size: 199.6 KB

Blythe Beacons
I don’t know about these guys… they can pitch and likely have the best staff in the WL West, but they’re offensively challenged, and, while they can & will steal bases, that’s not enough if you don’t get on-base at a good clip, and especially if you don’t have guys who can really drive the ball to bring runs in. So, yeah, they’ll keep a lot of clubs off the board, sure, but they’re not the type of club that can run it up on you, so, even in facing their formidable staff, teams, the good ones anyways, will likely still be in games when they shouldn’t be, making these Beacons susceptible to misfortune, to the occasional bad bounce. Basically, they can’t reach the potential the BNN Pundits are banking on in these predictions without winning the close ones, and in baseball, it being a fickle mistress and all that, nothing is guaranteed.

Name: 1999_PreviewBlythe.png
Views: 159
Size: 191.8 KB

Marianna Palms
The Palms hit the ball better than Blythe, they should get on base at a higher rate, and they’re capable of hitting doubles to bring runners across… and, while they have a tip top pitching staff, it operates at a tick or two below that of the Beacons. So, will an above average offense coupled with a top flight staff be enough to carry Marianna to the playoffs or will a team like Blythe, one who, on paper, is not much different from them, get it done… or, and this is the likeliest scenario, will Dumfries keep them both at arm’s length, teasing these clubs like a playground bully does the runt at the jungle gym? I’d say the smart money is on Dumfries but then it’s not really that smart to bet on sports at all so… your guess is as good as mine.

1999 Season (Opening Day)

The first game I played in the inaugral season of this save was a tilt pitting the visiting Osceola Stars against the Pikeville Pirates... and it was something of a slog.

C Dylan Romero really made the most out of his weak hitting profile.

1999 Season (Leeward League Update - June 5th)

We’re a couple months into the season, stopping for a moment to look over the draft, and I figured this is as good a time as any to check in on the league. In many ways, things are going as expected – Pikeville has opened a 2-game lead in LL East, though their +110 RDiff suggests they should have a better record than their current 34-21 mark, while Brunswick and Norridge duke it out in the LL West with just a game and a half separating the two… and, as expected, the Van Buren Captains are still hanging around too, poised to strike should the Patriots or Whalers take their eyes off the prize.

Osceola Stars
Picked to finish in the rear with the gear by the BNN pundits, these Osceola Stars have been something of a pleasant surprise during our inaugural season… after finishing April on a 12-14 record, things looked like we thought they would for the Stars – just another moribund club shuffling along aimlessly in the back of the pack. That’s when RF Daniel Ray (329/390/539, 11 HR, 27 RBI, 3.0 WAR), 2B David Fonville (314/407/469, 1 HR, 28 RBI, 2.6 WAR), and CF Monte O’Rourke (290/333/529, 14 HR, 49 RBI, 2.0 WAR) started to put it down something fierce, leading their club to an improbable, if rip-roaring, 18-9 month of May to march all the way back up to 2nd place where they’re currently occupying their time by nipping at Pikeville’s heels.

Also, don’t look now… BUT1B Mason Kimble, of the Pikeville Pirates, has an outside chance at earning the triple crown – kid’s set an unbelievable pace so far this year.

1999 Season (Windward League Update - June 5th)

In the WW East, Uniontown has put down a fine start to the 1999 campaign, jumping out to a 3-game lead over the Andalusia Giants (who are currently riding a 9-game win streak) while everyone else in their division has already seemed to lay down & play dead. You could make an argument that Plattsburgh and Bethpage each still have an outside shot of making some noise this season, but I think it’s more important to pick your battles – and, this not being one you’d likely win, why bother? Over in the WW West, Dumfries have proven to be who we thought they were so far, jumping out to a 36-20 record & lording over their division by 3.5 games… the surprise here is the hard-charging Swarthmore, who are determined to give Dumfries a run, and the poor performance of both Marianna and Blythe who were thought to be the dark horse clubs at the outset of the season.

Swarthmore Anchors
Despite boasting a starting rotation ranked dead last in the Windward League for ERA and the fact that they are ranked 11th in the league for runs allowed, Swarthmore is getting by on offense, guile, and more than their fair share of luck. It’s a good news story for their fans, and their region of Calirida, but one that isn’t likely to last. They've landed ashore, have stormed the gates, and look primed to raze the castle… it’s just that, with their subpar pitching & defense, I can’t see a scenario where the walls of said castle don’t hold and where the archers don’t, eventually, turn them away.

1999 Season (Amateur Draft)

Well, the first pick of our very first Amateur Draft has been entered into the permanent record, with that honor being bestowed upon SS James Voltz, who looks to be a slick fielder with solid range and a batsmen capable of hitting for power and average, though he’ll be prone to the strikeout… the Middleburgh, West Kenshire product will begin his professional career with Damariscotta just south of his birthplace in the southernmost city in Port-au-Bountois…

I’ll not spend too much time detailing the inaugural draft – there will likely be a few gems in this class that I detail at another time… but, I’d be remiss not to mention that I spent an hour or so in the ‘schools.xml’ file last night addind a ton of fictional universities, CC’s, and HS’s to the file so that by the time our next draft rolls around, we’ll have a school name somewhere in Faussland tied to each player profile – not an essential part of the game, but it adds some additional color that I find alluring in a fictional save – allows me to let my imagine run wild like Hulkamania used to in the 80’s.

That's some serious dedication! Will make it all worth it in the long run I imagine. That level of immersion should make it easier to keep up with. The amount of detail in this is impressive and it will make the storylines that much sweeter!

Ha! An obsessive, and likely unnecessary, quirk. I haven't went back and added anything to the file since... so, who knows.

1999 Season (Leeward League East Update – July 13th)

As we break for the All-Star festivities (I’ll not recap the game – it’s just not that interesting to me), now is as good a time as any to take a quick look at the Fausslandian Baseball Federation, starting with the Leeward League East where Pikeville has extended their lead in the LL East to a sturdy 6-games on the strength of their outlandish +54 RDiff & current 4-game winning streak – and to think, these guys have been so dominant, so in control that only a few misfortunate bounces in 1-run games has kept them from reaching their full potential as suggested by the Pyt – they should be sitting on a 58-31 record and enjoying an 9-game lead. Look, there’s still some runway left, sure, but I’d be hard pressed to see a scenario where Pikeville suddenly falls apart, leaving their top-dollar parts strewn about the road ahead, and don’t come out smelling roses at the end of this thing – it’s theirs to lose, folks. And, you’re right, a cursory look at the standings shows Munford, Dunmore, and Osceola hangin’ tough, like NKOTB in Costa Mesa, but lets be honest with ourselves here – each don’t have what it takes to get the girl this year. Pikeville has it all – the looks, the skills, the swagger…

Pikeville Pirates
Ahh, yes… Pikeville, the class of the Leeward League, what with their tip-top offense, capable of smashing most opposing staffs to smithereens, its .820 OPS and league leading 139 home runs, that they pair with a mostly so-so rotation that’s been a bit soft on the backend. They’re not a perfect club – they’re getting it done, admirably, no doubt… but, and this is important, they haven’t exactly ran away with things yet… which, is not to say that they won’t, they will, but for club so solidly build, with such a sturdy foundation, the expectation are sky high – so high, in fact, that this middling 6-game lead over their divisional rivals hasn’t been enough to get the punditry 100% on board with the Pirates. The naysayers are still naysaying, hoping that their warning of a potential collapse will come to fruition if only to sell a few more newspapers and usher in some much-needed job security.

Munford Herons
Meanwhile, in Munford, where luck is the catch of the day and their most sincere hope is that they’ll have enough of it leftover for tomorrow’s soup du jour, the Herons are enjoying a level of success that their +9 RDiff suggests they’ll be unable to sustain. Still, it’s all joy juice and Band-Aids so far for the Herons as they keep their head above water, buoyed by the Leeward League’s 2nd-ranked offense, for the time being… until the anchor that is their 14th ranked staff finds a hold strong enough to halt their forward progress. This run has, no doubt, been fun for the citizenry of Munford – but, the numbers suggest that this ‘success’, such that it is, will be short lived, doomed to disappoint their legions of fans who’ve allowed themselves to give in to hope, to promises of a brand new day, despite what the math says. Go on then Munford, celebrate, dance & be merry… enjoy it while you can.
