Never seen it.
Good to know it's in the game. I recently had a third baseman step on third for a force out rather than throwing to second or first. |

Yeah it’s the kind of thing that looks simple and easy when it happens. I recall the Mickey Morandini unassisted triple play with the Phillies. Caught a line drive already moving to his right toward 2B, stepped on the bag, tagged the runner who was almost at the bag and couldn’t stop. I mean, he barely moved. Can’t recall but must have been an ill-advised double steal with none out by the other team. It’s only after the fact that it dawns on you how very rare that set of circumstances has to be, for this to happen.
Similar thing in the AAA triple play I saw in Richmond in 1978. Hard ground ball, right to the 3B playing on the line. He steps on 3B, fires to 2B for the force out, and the slow runner to 1B is easily “tripled up”. It took me a moment to realize what had just happened. (Give me a break. I had attended a Grateful Dead concert the night before, in Williamsburg….) Elegant and amazing when it actually happens. I always wonder if I - back when I was playing - would have had the presence of mind to know what to do. Or is it just intuitive?
