Strange AI in-game substitution

Noticed an AI substitution that I found extremely odd.

Saved game immediately following this game.

Game ID: 2349 St Louis (AI) at Detroit (me), 2nd inning. Detroit batter (Johnson, SS) is facing the St. Louis SP, Art Magnuson. Johnson was injured on the play, so my manager swaps in a pinch runner. (I manually move him to 2B & my 2B to SS to avoid the AI manager messing it up.) Next batter, St Louis brings is a RP and moves Magnuson from SP to C. He had never played C and is at 20 on both ability and arm.

Why would a SP who has never played C before (for good reason) switch in mid-inning? (They had 2 other catchers and the starter was not injured.)
