Gowdy (and) the Brave(s)
The season looked promising. A bit of luck and a pennant run for the Boston Braves was possible.

But by season's end something had gone off the rails.

Calling into question who was behind the plate all year.

So when your sole catcher is on the DL, time to pitch in and help out....

Yet, despite all that help from the team. Guy has an attitude problem.

I'm not following here.....
They had 1 catcher on the roster and he was damaged goods. So he got hurt, as to be expected, and they used non-catchers at catcher for the entire remainder of the season. The results aren't surprising..... Who was in control of the team for it to play out that way, human or AI. |

Man, tough year for the Braves catching corps. Here's how Hank Gowdy actually spent 1918 per SABR...
"The United States entered World War I in April, and on June 1 Gowdy became the first active major leaguer to enlist, joining the Ohio National Guard. The big catcher reported for duty six weeks later and was overseas by early 1918. Gowdy served with distinction in the famed Rainbow Division, so-named by General Pershing because it had the uncanny luck of being surrounded by rainbows during the heavy combat it faced. Arriving in the Lorraine region of France in March, Gowdy endured trench warfare in its most brutal sense as the Germans made their fierce last effort to overrun the Allies on the Western Front. He carried the colors for the Fighting 42nd and returned to the United States a genuine hero, as popular in Boston as the mayor himself. Turning down an offer of $1,500 a week for 30 weeks to tour the country and speak of his heroics, Gowdy returned to the Braves and on May 24, 1919, hit the first big-league pitch he’d seen for almost two years for a single."

Hmmm, why do the predicted standings show teams playing 156 games, except for the Giants and Cubs who have 157 games?

Sidebar. Boston shows 151 games played, and the next column, innings pitched, shows 12,135. This number seems juuuuust a bit high...
The rest of the teams' IP numbers look equally suspect. Am I reading this wrong? Last edited by Tirebiter; 08-15-2023 at 07:55 PM. |

That's the fielding stats page, so total innings played in the field for all players combined.

I'm just struggling to understand the purpose behind this.... Was this a test run by the OP to see how a season without a catcher would play out, or is this something terribly wrong with a computer managed team....
Because yes, a team without a catcher will have some problems. 25 screen shots aren't needed to tell me that lol |

To each their own, but I found it to be an entertaining journey of futility, and seeing just how poorly each performed along the way.

Anyway, its the Fed's Buffalo Blues and the AL's Cleveland Indians starting off the post season round robin tonight. Tribes led by Speaker and Sisler, and the Herd are a bunch of guys I never heard of (though it is deadball era). Blues lead 3-2 going into the 8th.

Yeah, I got a chuckle discovering it and putting it together. Though definitely something wrong with the game. Entire season was destroyed but what is definitely a bug.

Was fascinating to look at all the crooked numbers, but also something that really shouldn't have gotten that far out of control (position players being 125% inept at pitching). |

You haven't actually explained anything, so the rest of us have no idea if this is a bug, an issue with the game, or an expected result.
