New to playing out games and need help

Bought every version since OOTP4 but really haven't played out games all that much.

On a base hit, player went from first to third after the runner at second had an easy time scoring. My left fielder throws the ball home when he should've thrown it to third. Am I able to "control" that play by having the outfielder throw the ball to third which would've been a close play, probably the runner would've been out?

To answer your question, no you aren't able to control where they throw the ball. You just have to watch it play out.

If you're new to playing out games the one thing I will tell you is some of the visuals will be misleading and / or not make any sense at all. Examples would be fly balls to the OF that look like the fielder has to take one or two steps to easily catch but it will still fall in for a base hit. Other times outfielders will drift to the ball for what looks like an easy out and then at the last minute they will jump and the ball goes over their head. Should clearly be an error, right? Nope. In fact, that's pretty much par for the course for what constitutes a double or triple. Balls will land in foul territory but will be called fair. Base hits that will look to be very shallow but when you get the prompt to try and advance the runner it will say the ball is very deep, etc. etc.

Overall the visuals of the game are great, but if you're new to playing out games there will just be an adjustment period of getting used to some parts of the visuals that don't really flow the smoothest. To the point you brought up, guys throwing the ball to home plate when the run clearly scored, when the better reality is to cut the throw and get the trail runner at 2nd or 3rd. It's a little maddening at first, but you will get used to it. I've played enough games out where I can pretty much tell what is going to be the outcome as soon as contact is made and seeing how the fielders react. People that have been playing games out for a while will agree with that. But if you're new to playing the games out --- there will be some things that you see and you'll be like WTF?!?!?! since the visual you are seeing isn't adding up to the text of the play.

But to give a simple answer to your question -- when you see one of those WTF moments, you cannot do anything to change the way the fielders are reacting.

Ok, thanks. Good information.

Trust the play by play over the animations.

Particularly when you are asked whether to send the runner, disregard what you are seeing and rely on the hints in the narrative, e.g. “shallow fly ball, slow runner, great arm”. And be mindful of the situation. Almost any decent runner can go first to third with two outs on a ball hit to RF, unless it is Roberto Clemente or Johnny Callison out there.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

This was a learning curve for me. Seeing the ball up against the wall but the prompt would say "ball is very shallow" of seeing the ball barely past the infield and the prompt tells you the "ball is very deep." Always rely on the text and ignore the visual in these situations.
