Confused!??

Could you guys look at this game log, and explain to me how the run was scored in the top of the 2nd inning? There is no indication in the box score of it being driven in. No balk, passed ball, wild pitch, etc. It is in the final score, and charged to the pitcher as an earned run, but nothing about how it happened. Whassup
Thanks much. (P.S. Only confused about the one run in this half inning. There was already a run scored in the first).

Batting: Monte Cristo, top of 2nd.

Pitching: Daniel Giblin
1B Gregory Stegner:
SINGLES to center
C Paul Calder:
Grounds into fielders choice to the pitcher, Stegner out at 2nd base.
3B Arthur Birdsell:
DOUBLES to the gap in left-center.
P. Calder to third.
LF Albert Griego:
P. Calder scores.
A. Birdsell to third.
Strikes out looking.
2B Greg Duval:
Base on balls.
DH John Haviland:
Strikes out swinging.
Inning over... one run, 2 hits, no errors.
Score: Monte Cristo 2, Timberland 0

Huh, now this is bugging me. I can't figure it out either. Can you also post the complete box score for this game? Thanks.

My guess is a wild pitch. SInce they are not "scored" in the game, there wouldn't be any indication of it after the fact.

Thanks, Henry, but doesn't it usually say "wild pitch" in the pitching recaps?

I'm not sure if they would be in the log currently as the log is "primarily" for the scoring of plays, though if they aren't they should be. I'm going to check now for this.

What if the output was in the wrong order for one line :

Now it looks like the pbp does in the game when it tells you that the runner reached third, then in the next line it tells you he scored (from the double). Birdsell must have gone to third on the throw home.

Just my theory.

That's a good point, blmeanie, but it doesn't account for the fact that the box score only shows 3 runs batted in for the game. 4 runs were scored total. I see where the 3 RBI occured, but can't figure out this 4th "phantom" run.

I'm not 100% sure, but I did a search of a folder that contained "game logs" for the words "wild pitch" and no instances were found. This is a league that has had wild pitches happen so I'm thinking that the logs don't record them and that is probably the stituation here.

Thanks for checking, Steve. I did pretty much the same thing, and I found "wild pitch" in some game logs, and box scores in the pitching recap. I DID NOT find any instance where a run occured because of a wild pitch. Don't know if that means anything. Just another mystery, I guess.

I just went back through the games that had been played in my solo fictional league. I stopped counting after I found about 7 instances of wild pitches occuring. In those games, no run scored due to the wild pitch (runners did advance), so I guess it's not the same as the original post. Maybe what you (and Henry) said is what happened...a wild pitch, but it wasn't recorded in the game log. Still don't see why it wouldn't have been mentioned in the pitching recap.

I'm not sure, but it is something to look more closely at.

What about passed balls? Would they show up in the box score?
Maybe Calder scored on a passed ball when Griego was up. That would account for the missing RBI.

Hi Eric,
Good thought, and I figured you were on to something. But, checking back, I see that neither the pitcher, nor the catcher involved have been charged with either a WP, or a PB, respectively. Thanks again.

The "missing" RBI could have scored on a Double Play. You don't get an RBI if you ground into a double play.

Hiya Scott,
There was no DP in the inning. Thanks, anyway.
