Fielding Stats ?
I like to use the advanced fielding stats when evaluating that particular skill, however I've only just started getting into the deeper stats last year and have a question I hope someone can answer.
(Couldn't find an answer at FanGraphs) Looking at Mr. Parra (see image) for this season he shows a total of 105 total chances. When I add up his "biz" numbers, they equal more that 105. Trying to narrow it down, I think TC only covers Routine, Likely, & Even balls as those 3 totals add up to 105. Everything else, Unlikely, Remote, and Impossible balls are not considered/counted as Chances? Am I making the correct assumption or am I looking at this all wrong? Tks for any/all feedback. _ |

A fielder has to field the ball for it to be a chance. BIZ are basically opportunities to have a chance.

TC is basically putouts + assists + errors (roughly speaking - I forget off-hand if handling the DP ball counts as 2 chances). BIZ will include stuff like infield singles or hits past the fielder that are "assigned" to the fielder.

Total chances is kind of a caveman stat compared to the more advanced stuff. It's just putouts + assists + errors, just like Matt said.
With a double play, the guy who is in the middle of the DP scoring would get 2 total chances. A 4-6-3 DP for example, the 2nd baseman is getting the assist with the out at 2nd base (1 total chance for him), the shortstop is getting the putout for the out at 2nd base and an assist for the out at 1st base (2 total chances for him), and then the 1st baseman is getting the putout at 1st base (1 total chance for him). If you aren't physically assigned a putout, assist or an error than it doesn't count as a total chance - even if it's a play you absolutely should have made.... It's a relatively primitive fielding stat, comparatively speaking. Last edited by md40022; 03-27-2023 at 06:05 PM. |

Like the old line that Jeter had a relatively good fielding percentage, its just that most grounders hit to him were "singles to left field".
