Removing a Player from 40-man Roster
Quick question for anyone in the know ( I feel like I. should know this, but I just want to be sure).
If you want to remove a minor league player from the 40 man roster, may you simply waive the player for 3 days as opposed to waiving AND DFAing the player? Obviously the difference would be that the player can remain on his minor league team (and playing in games) while he is being waived, but not if it is required for him to be both. |

No need to DFA.

I did just test and it doesn't seem like they will be removed from the 40-man until they clear waivers. So, if you need them off immediately you might need to DFA still.
That doesn't seem completely correct regarding the MLB rules, but I would need to read through the rules to be sure. |

Yes, I think actual rules mandate the player is DFA & Waived, not just waived.

DFA is needed when you're removing someone with a major league contract, regardless if they are currently in the majors or not. If it's a minor leaguer who's never been promoted and still has a minor league contract, waivers should do the trick just fine. But iirc OOTP struggles with spring training sometimes and will elevate players contracts sometimes when it shouldn't.
