Free Agents never lowering their asks throughout the offseason and well into the season.
Our league heavily make use of the new waypoint system in 23 and we have noticed something odd that we are now potentially tying into that system. Free agents almost never lower their asks (or barely do) throughout the offseason and even well into the season (we use waypoints for every single sim of the year).
Has anyone else experienced this? Before 23 this was never an issue. Thanks. |

It may very well depend on the player…that’s my best guess.

Some context would help sort this out. How many free agents have signed, and did they get their asking price, or something close to it? Are the remaining guys superstars, fringe players, a mix? As IRL my guess is the AI waits for some signings to “make the market” by establishing some parameters. Of course, there is little incentive to sign early, before Spring Training. Are there multiple free agents effectively competing with each other, such as with the shortstops this year (last year)? That could affect the market. You don’t want to be Dansby Swanson.
I have experienced top guys being quite inflexible as to years and AAV. I guess they figure they will get the money eventually, if they hold out for the best deal. And at the other end, some fringe guys hold out, even though the risk is being out of baseball. I guess it isn’t worth it to come back for chump change. But the everyday guys in the middle typically work things out, often with their existing team. Or at least that’s been my experience. My own approach as GM has been to try and sign my best guys to long-term contracts as they enter arbitration. Wait for their opening bid, then offer that for the next year, with increasing amounts up to their free agency year. At that point you can end the contract, or build in much higher figures, anticipating their FA value. To me it makes good sense to try to lock up guys, well before any other team can make an offer. Of course, their agents will tell them to wait, that they are worth more; but it’s a bird in hand, sure thing, in case of injury or fall-off in talent level or performance. I’m generous with guys who have proven themselves. It’s a win to pay modest amounts up to free agency, with the larger years deferred.
