Very Bizarre AI Behavior (buggy)

I just had an injury at the low A level (a pitcher) and the AI for some reason automatically put him on the IL. He is out 6 weeks with a hamstring strain so I would have done this anyway...but the AI should not be doing this without my say so.

Now before you ask, I do have the AI set to handle minor league depth charts/pitching rotations/lineups...but that shouldn't cause this. Can anyone explain why this is happening? This is my responsibility as a GM (all the more reason for an organizational injury report that you can subscribe to either daily, weekly or monthly...or a medical centre type area/screen)) and it messes me up when I don't know which player was placed there because it only shows quickly as a pop-up. I happen to know in this case it's a pitcher, so I can now go find another P to replace the player...but you can see where this is difficult on days with multiple injuries and a lot more going on. Either this is a very poor design decision or a bug.

These are the little things that just bother me I am sorry to say, because I feel this is the kind of stuff that should be hashed out after 23 years. I realize all software has bugs and so forth...but even if this is a bug, it's still a poor design decision to only provide a pop-up for player injuries (if there are more than one, you cannot see where else the injuries are either)

Anyway, I did NOT put this player on the IL, yet there he is.

On your Manager options page, do you have the box checked to be notified of injuries on minor league teams as well?

I am controlling everything except the default AI Manager settings which are major league lineups, pitching staff & player strategy and also minor league lineups/0itching rotation a player strategy.

So outside those 5 settings, I control everything else.

See if this thread helps:

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...e+injured+list

The problem before was the AI was NOT making IL moves so there would be constant line-up holes. Posted so when you look at the who-controls-what, you can check these toggles/controls too.

Ugh…I guess I now have handle the depth charts and lineups at the minor league level? This wasn’t always like this, and it appears it was changed. I use strict roster rules/limits, so I really don’t like or want the AI moving players around without my knowledge.

This doesn’t seem right to me.

Then you need to micro-manage closer as you said. It wasn't working before as IL in the minors is, I imagine, not something many people micromanage as closely as you hence the flood of bug reports that the adjustment was done to fix.

I'm guessing you know this already but in case you don't (or for anyone else), while I acknowledge it will be somewhat tedious to do this every day/week/etc the good news is it's pretty quick since you can leave "Minor League Lineups/etc" as under your control so you can manage IL and then quickly go through each organizational level's "Organization->Overview" tab and click "Ask AI to setup complete team, lineups, etc" regularly.

That should avoid you having to do any *actual* Depth Chart/Lineup/Staff management.

That is what I am doing...and making some changes here and there via the individual player strategy. (if I don't like some of the AI decisions). Definitely a bit more time consuming, but at least I am paying a bit more attention to things than I might be ordinarily...so there's usually a bright side.

On another note (I just submitted this) I am finding that the "ask AI to set up all players strategy" and the "ask AI to set up John Unknown (individual player) strategy is NOT working as it should. The only way the AI will ever make changes is if you "erase all player strategies" first. So, this seems to be a bug to me...if anyone can confirm, it would be helpful.

OK...I am discovering a lot of issues with player strategy. (something they worked on extensively in 23)

When I set player strategy to be handled by myself, and then attempt to switch it back to the AI, the AI won't take control...and I (as the human player) still have full control over all player strategy.

I cannot help but thinking somehow all of these issues are interlinked, as they all seem the revolve around manager delegation options in the "Team Control Settings."

Something is wrong. Can someone else try to see if this is happening to them?

OK...I have found the casue of this. In another thread, it was suggested to select the "prevent any AI roster changes" box in the team settings. DO NOT do this. If you do, the AI will no longer make player strategy suggestions, or assume control of player strategy (even if you have it designate to do so)

Here is the thread and a screen shot of the option I am talking about.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but when the AI has control over your minor leagues, it seems to have an issue with rehab assignment and roster size limits. I have my roster size limits that mirror real life, but for some reason the AI will DFA players if it thinks it needs to. (why I don't know)

This was NOT an issue in versions prior to 23. I really do not like the way the AI makes decisions to place players on the AI and move them around when it is in control of lineups and pitching staffs. That is all it should be in charge of, and not ANY type of roster move or transaction. Going through each team to ask the managers for lineups & pitching staffs each and every day after making multiple transactions is a pain in the arse.

I actually like the way it was in previous versions before this was done. I am assuming this was done for players who sim lots of games at once, but it is NOT good for a day to day GM who manages with lots of detail, yet doesn't want to have to do the things that minor league managers should be doing on their own.

The AI is pretty awful at minor leagues. I pretty much lock and force start all of my prospects through out my entire minor organization. This number tends to rapidly grow over 5 years where you can end up with 100 prospects who have mlb potential or trade potential.

I lock them and force start them at positions i want. I also tend to adjust the positions over the course of the year. More positions they can play the better i appears if you are setting them up as trade bait.

Then the rest of the minor leagues I'll leave to the AI to auto adjust for injuries etc cause the rest of the players are pretty worthless. I mean i will check back to see if any of the non prospects pop and become prospects. Then I will lock/force start them.

I also keep all of them on a short list. Besides force starting positions I find individual strategy completely worthless especially if you setup all of your minor league coaches to use sabermetrics.

It is funny however if you force anyone with any amount of speed to run and steal to maximum. These ratings will actually improve and its pretty easy to steal for avg speed guys in minors so by the time these players get to the mlb there speed can be maxed out. I even had a catcher before get to near max stealing. He made good trade bait.

Literally after a couple of years my entire batting order, starting pitcher and closer are locked/forced started through out my entire minor league system. To me that is the only to do it. I consider prospects to have 3 star potential. You can really accumulate these type of players. All of them are mlb potential and some will pop to all star status at 4 or 5 stars.

The human can acquire 100+ of these prospects pretty easily within 5 years while every AI team will be lucky to have a dozen 3 star+ guys in their minors.

MAx development. Max scouting. Best coaches/mangers in every minor league system. I have no probably cranking out prospect year after year.

But I am pretty religious and trying to improve my minors. And I never have any players over 25 in my minor system unless they are AAAA shuttle players to cover for injuries.

This means even if I have to scour indy leagues and free agency for non usa players to improve my Dominican leagues. I will. Ive cut entire DSL teams before 40+ players and replaced them with young indy league guys and free agency cut from the asian foreign leagues.

I also play with service time and roster limits. My point never let the AI do anything. Unless you want to be casual. Lot of time players complain about difficulty its because they are letting the AI do stuff. If you want to dominate take control of everything. Lock players and force start everywhere in the minors.

The issue for me is not that I need to lock prospects to any given level because I don't let the AI control promotions/demotions in the first place. The issue is (and this was apparently changed for 23) that if I allow the AI managers to set the depth/lineups/pitching staff it will also somehow think it's part of it's responsibility to put players on the IL, and I think maybe even DFA players if you are over the limit of players allowed on a roster when there is a rehab assignment. (which the game is supposed to allow for).

There is just something screwy going on that I can put my finger on. Sometimes players don't appear on the roster even though the player profile says they are...but if you go to the actual team roster, they won't appear there...you then have to remove a player and drag and drop the player onto the roster (drop down player action menu won't allow for this)

I never encountered any of this until OOTP 23. I have brought it up previously, but nobody else seems to be bothered by it for some reason. But I feel there is definitely something a little "screwy" going on here.

I am playing devil's advocate. If the AI does not make put players on the IL as needed couldn't the team run out of players, since you have strict roster rules? Placing a player on IL it allows that team to call up another player to take his spot. I have the opposite problem my minor league players are rarely placed on IL until I reset minors.

Yes, it does, but wouldn't you as the GM want to make the determination? Also, it's very easy to not even realize the AI has done this. That's why I think it should be a very hands on approach, rather than a hands off one.

To me, putting someone on the IL is a line-up issue and I wouldn't want it back to part of the Promotion/Demotion settings. IL is a practical thing where promotions and demotions in the minors are more consequential things. But to get down to the core issue that balances both play styles, I think you are advocating for either:

1. At a minimum, that the IL movement to be called out on the settings in the Manager's Office (see how it is explicitly listed in the Majors settings but not in the Minors) - so a user doesn't have to hunt/assume what toggle controls it

2. IL movements in the Minors be their own line item, so you'd have the MiLB controls there as written (with no IL call out as stated in 1) but instead, its own line for setting control.

But mostly course of action 2, correct?

I dont know. I want the AI to put minor leaguers on the IL. I mean you can easily have over 100 players in the combined minors on the IL at any given time. 100 might be the extreme case but it is certainly common for several dozen 3-5 dozen players on the il.

That to me is tedious and I cant be bothered with it. But if i have all my good prospect players locked I can just click the let AI sort the minors button. It will just rearrange the scrubs to fill out the roster over the minors.

That is how I handle it. Not saying there a problem or not. But I probably dont see it cause i micro my minor leagues pretty hard.

I only want my scrubs minor leaguers moved around for injury purposes. I only check for promotions in july and end of season unless someone is absolutely killing their minor league.

Also I wouldnt recommend having roster limits equal to real life. MLB/Milb did change the rules going into the 22 season. And ootp cant really duplicate the new rules. Especially with service limits cause there are exceptions. I would add +5 players to whatever the milb is setup in real life and maybe a +10 players to DSL leagues.

I find it best to have some kind of limit cause unlimited was plain awful and no idea why that is the default setting, makes absolutely no sense that is default. I remember ootp 18 was my 1st game and just seeing the large market teams have 100 players in AAA was awful. Promotions were all screwed up. Super old life long milb players everywhere. It was awful.

Even service time you can add a +1 year to every thing the milb has in real life. The game in my opinion just needs some kind of limit to keep the flow of players correct but it is still a game and not real life so you dont want it 100% strictly matching mlb/milb rules.

Plus if it is unlimited it makes it super easy for the human player I cannot imagine the assets you can get on any difficulty. it would be like easy mode.I would probably have a A+ team that could compete in the MLB with no limits, it would be insane.

i just dont know if its a problem or not colonel. I certainly dont want to see any IL for my minors there are just too many injuries. IF you have say 9 minor league systems its easy to over 50 players cycling on the IL all the time. That is way to many clicks for me.

I already think ootp has an excessive amount of clicks. IT easily has 4 or 5 times the amount of clicks FM has In my opinion. Most of it is from an outdated ui but thats another story lol

Yes, I think maybe it should be its own line item. What I am really advocating for though, is a much more extensive delegation system as I described in this thread. But, yes, I do think this should likely be its own item if you are going to keep things more similarly to the way they are currently. I am not a big fan of the pop-ups and the AI doing things without the players' knowledge.

I would also like to see a medical centre added, so that injuries can be managed in a much easier and convenient way.
