Presets file for historical - historical injuries/suspensions needed

As mentioned in the FHM9 announcement, we've enabled the presets.txt file for historical games, which will allow them to start with the injuries and suspensions that existed at the start of the game's first season. The file will be very complete back to 2013, since I just used the presets files from each previous version of FHM, but to start with I've only got a couple of hundred entries for pre-2013 seasons. Basically just the major injuries and longer suspensions, and a few other things. It's a good start but a long way from being complete, so I'd appreciate any help people can contribute in fleshing out the list.

The current version of the file is attached below. The format is listed at the top of the file, 0 in the first column = injury, 1=suspension.

If there are any historical injuries or suspensions that need to be added, let me know here. Keep in mind that these need to be injuries or suspensions that existed at the start of the NHL season and caused the player to miss games - the vast majority of injuries happen after that and won't be listed here. I've also added a couple of new injury types that won't be used by the game to create new injuries, "personal reasons" and "cancer", but can be used here. I've used "personal reasons" to include a lot of guys who shouldn't be able to be signed in particular seasons, but show up now as RFA's or UFA's in the game - Dryden when he took a year off in 1973, pre-comeback retirements of Lafleur, Howe, Lindsay, etc.

You don't need to format your contributions as in the file, just give me the name, season, injury type, and the approximate time they returned or number of games they were suspended for. "Suspensions" can include team suspensions, not just league ones, e.g. when players were under contract but held out and refused to play, as well as players who weren't suspended but were in jail (MacTavish, Probert, Danton, etc.) One exception: military service; it'd break the roster AI if we used suspensions to model that, because so many players would be gone during World War 2. We're working on a better system to handle those guys.

How are career ending injuries being handled?
For example, Brian Bradley suffered a concussion during 97-98 , missed remainder of season , then whole of 98-99 season, then announced his retirement in August 99.
So would FHM still have him on Tampa's roster for 98-99 and out injured, or would he
only be included up to 97-98 season?

Edit: For historical accuracy I'd guess he should be included, as his possible return (or otherwise) would influence how management handled the team.

Thanks, exactly what I needed, I'll try to get those in for the launch.

Career-ending injuries depend on how I've got the player set up in the database. Bradley's career is set to end after 1997-98, so there's no need for the injury data there. That'll be the case for most players, their career ends after the last year they played games.

The only place it's really necessary to include the permanently-injured players is in the cap era, where they have to stay around in the years they were still contracted so their team takes their cap hit. So that'll be from 2004-05 to 2012-13, everything after that will already be on the list from the presets files from previous FHM's.

Not sure if they count but Niedermayer sat out the first 34 games of 07-08 debating retirement and Selanne missed 56 games before signing in 07-08 for the same reason. In Niedermayers case he was suspended by the team without pay until he decided to come back.

Jeff, will this preset file also work for a standard game? the manual would seem to indicate it does

There's a separate presets file for the current season in the standard game already. The historical one won't do anything if you put it in the current or opening day quickstarts, all of the data in it is from 2021 or earlier.

I've been pulling what hair I have left out trying to verify this.. but I could have sworn that Connie Forey of the blues was banned for life from the NHL for slugging a ref in either 73 or 74 and showed up in the WHA the very next day with no name on the back of his jersey.. I thought I remembered a ref stating that if they knew who he was then.. that the refs would have walked out in protest.. could someone help me with this?

Looks like it was a minor league where he was suspended for the rest of 73-74 and all of 74-75. He did indeed play four games with the Blues and one with the WHA's Cougars. He assaulted the ref in the WHL with the Denver Spurs. He then showed up in the WHA, and then(?) apparently the NHL for four games. He played in 74-75 in the NAHL and then never again on the pro level.

The assault of the ref was in the WHL, and he was suspended for assaulting a ref there. All other pro leagues honored the suspension. He was suspended for 73-74 season as well as 74-75. Chicago Cougars did try to play him in a game during the suspension without a name on his jersey. He played 1 game and the WHA banned him from the league when they found out he played.

Thanks again - the Iafrate-Musil list will be in the hotfix update, I'll see if I can sneak that latest one in but it may have to wait for the update after that.

Come to think of it, he should start 81-82 late, too, he was "retired" until he signed with Winnipeg in midyear.

Managed to get all of these into the hotfix. If anyone has more to contribute, keep them coming, and I'm continuing to dig through my collection of old Hockey News issues for season-start injured lists.
