Rink23's replay of the 1973 season with the St. Louis Cardinals
With the ending of my St. Louis River Walkers franchise after 24 seasons, 2018 through 2042, I decided to take on something different.
My first baseball memory is watching the 1971 World Series -- the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles in a thrilling seven games. Steve Blass was the hero on the mound for the Bucs. The immortal Roberto Clemente was the MVP. The first pennant race I remember being invested in was in 1973, when my team, the St. Louis Cardinals, battled the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates down to the wire. Despite going 81-81, the Cardinals were not eliminated until Sept. 28 with two games remaining. The Mets won the division with an 82-79 record. They would go on to defeat the heavily favored Cincinnati Reds, who had gone 99-63, in the National League Championship Series. Defending World Series champion Oakland would defeat the Mets in a thrilling seven-game series, claiming the second of three consecutive championships. This St. Louis team features an aging Bob Gibson as its ace and Lou Brock at the top of its lineup. Joe Torre is two-years past an MVP campaign in 1971, while Ted Simmons is his second season as a starter in what will become a Hall -of-Fame career. The rules of the game are the same. No DH, no interleague play, etc. But this is my team and I will not be bound by history in terms of lineups, the ability to make trades or move players up and down from the minors. I have already played through spring training and the season will commence on opening day. |

Cards 73: April 14 -- Torre goes on injured list with foot injury
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed first baseman Joe Torre on the 15-day injured list with a foot injury he suffered in a 7-1 loss to the New York Mets on April 10.
Torre, 32, has batted .294 with two homers, three RBIs and two runs scored in four games. Getting called up from AAA San Bernadino is 25-year-old infield Mick Kelleher. He has batted .200 with a no homers and one run scored and one RBI in four games for the Lakers. Kelleher played in 23 games for the Cardinals in 1972, hitting just .159 with one RBI and one run scored. Last edited by rink23; 10-09-2022 at 03:17 AM. |
