Does pre-season matter?

In OOTP, players can learn new positions faster and get rid of off-season rust. Does that happen in FHM too? I play out all the pre-season games in FHM and give more minutes to the fourth line vs. the 1st to reduce injuries to stars while still making sure everyone gets some ice time.

Just wondering if I am wasting my time doing so and could just throw a bunch of AHLers out there to avoid injury with no real detriment to preparations for the regular season.

Yes. The online manual notes that players will be rusty from the offseason and need time to get into playing shape and to knock off the rust.
