Does OOTP23 allow for multiple, fielding positions?
Once again, just bought the game this week so just learning. I believe I had a very old version a long time ago and it allowed me to input multiple, fielding positions for each player. Of course, the primary position would be the best defensively, but it allowed for a player who played multiple positions in real life to also be listed in the game. I don't see that here. I don't see anywhere on the screen where a player can be listed on the roster in multiple positions. Players such as the Dodgers Chris Taylor would be beneficial to have on the roster because of his utility. Is this something that can be done in the game and if so, how do I do it? Other examples would be Chipper Jones who initially played 3B, but also some shortstop, finished his career in left field. He should be able to play all positions. Same with a player like Craig Biggio who started as a catcher but made his All-Star career at 2B. It would really be beneficial to be able to play Biggio at C sometimes because the Astros lack All-Time players at that position. Miguel Cabrera started his career at 3B with the Florida Marlins and ended up at 1B along with some time in the outfield. Even outfielders such as Gary Sheffield first started his career at 3B and then moved to left field and right field. Why aren't outfielders allowed to be listed at multiple positions? Any help would be appreciated.Thank you.

Players that play multiple positions are rated in those positions (top right hand side of player profile)

You can also teach players positions that aren't listed on their profile, if they have the correct fielding ratings necessary, like range, error, arm and double play. They just need to play games at a new position to learn it. They learn new positions quickest in spring training. Obviously to learn SS or CF, a player will need great range, and very good ratings elsewhere. But teaching a 3B to play 1B, for example, will always give him a better rating at 1B long term since it's an easier position to learn/play, if that makes sense.
In 23, which is new, players potential fielding ratings are also shown, but they need to have experience at that position for it to register. But you can basically mirror real life positions in OOTP. You can draft someone with good range in the outfield and the infield, and teach them several positions in the minors, developing your very own Chris Taylor. The defensive set up in the game is incredibly deep, the more you play the more you can play around with it. Last edited by TwinsTHunter; 08-23-2022 at 11:14 PM. |

And Spring Training “counts” in terms of reps at a new position, so potentially you have 25 games or so for a guy to gain experience. I have used this to extend the capability of utility players. I try to be realistic, and the game cabins the ability to be too adventurous with new positions.
Another thing I do in the Editor is change the numbers (0-200) for player frequency at various positions. For example, if a guy is rated at 200 for 1B, but I know he would rarely if ever play there for me, I reduce that to 100 or 50. Then I might increase, say, his OF number from 100 to 200, if that will be his regular position for me. That only indirectly affects his fielding ratings, but it’s another way to make his profile consistent with intended use. (Some would see this as a “cheese”, as the position frequency is based on history, and I am, in effect, changing history. I don’t see it as creating any unfair advantage.). |
