converted save between versions advice and pitfalls
I have never converted a save between versions. I heard it is easy. I have heard horror stories. What is the best time to do it (or is any time in the offseason fine)? Any other advice? What should I be checking afterward to see if any errors occurred?
Thanks. EDIT: Also, do new features become available when going to a newer version with an old save or are you locked what was available in the original? Last edited by Galeg; 08-05-2022 at 07:16 PM. |

only issue i've had moving my 22 game to 23 was a change in my player modifiers. but - i'd muddled around with lots of changes in the OOTP 22 version to the point they were more than mildly wonky - some of those didn't transfer exactly the same - they were close but more in line with the game's default. that was actually a good thing in advancing my game. i moved my game after Jan. 1 (game time). that seemed to be the time of mostly nothing happening game-wise for me.
as far as new features - the only one i've checked on was the ability to move players 20 and under to the international complex works perfectly from my transfer from OOTP 22 into 23. That feature wasn't available in 22. It's something i use and had been asking for quite a while. i am assuming that other new features will also work once you get the game updated to 23, but can't guarantee it. All in all - it's about a 5 to 7 minute transfer and it went pretty much seamlessly for me.

My main game is one that I've imported through every version starting in OOTP 20. I haven't had any issues. Obviously, I just had to make tweaks to fix rule changes and whatnot.
Just import in the offseason and you should be good to go, I don't think it matters when in the offseason you do it. |

I've imported from v4(2002) all the way to v23. Normally you can import at any time without any big issues. However there were some changes under the hood with v23 that, IIRC, had the developers suggesting to import between seasons. Normally I would not wait but, this year did take the advice and did it between seasons.
When? I did it the day after the World Series ended. This mean all off-season things would be done in v23. IE FA filings, arbitration, winter meetings, etc. Things I do after import.. I look through all of the setup screens and check that all options I use remained the same. I don't think I've ever had any change but better to look than regret Look for any new options added or rule changes. IE base coaches a version or two ago were added. 3 batter minimum, extra inning rule, come to mind. For v23 one new one is the draft lottery. IIRC it was off by default on my import and I had to turn it on and decide how I wanted it set up. Don't be surprised if some player ratings change. The scouting module is normally tweaked. For v23, there was some under the hood changes on pitcher stuff(?) or movement(?) that may show up in their ratings. Some overreact when these things come up but keep in mind the players didn't change, per se. IOW before thinking WTF play some games and check the performance.Importing in OOTP works well and is easy to do in my experience. If you run into an issue you can always just import again as long as you haven't deleted the file from your previous version. Even with that in mind I make a backup of my "fresh import" before doing anything. I've never gone back and used it but, it's there. Can't speak to the horror stories, never had a problem. Maybe users that have made a lot of settings changes (player creation, aging, etc) have more problems? IDK. I would think those users would need to do some testing to see how their custom changes worked with the new game? Where the, mostly default, I use tends to transition smoothly? IOW the developer can test a "default import" easily but cannot begin to test all of the multiple setups that users come up with? In any case if you take some time doing it and look things over you should be ok.

I totally agree with Sweed. Good advice. Never had an issue with a save I've used for 6 or 7 versions.
