What's The Best Package Trade You've Made?

Just wondering what package trades you've made. I tried shopping Willie McCovey (clone) in a package trade but my AGM hated every deal for prospects. I will have to trade McCovey after the season most likely.

I had a situation where I had the top pitcher in all of baseball, future first ballot HoF type of player, think Nolan Ryan and Greg Maddux had a baby. My owner sold the team and the new owner dropped my payroll and I could not afford to resign the pitcher without completely gutting the rest of the team. We were knocked off in the LCS the previous year and we were heading into his contract year, so I put the 31 yr old pitcher on the block. I was able to trade him to on of the bigger market teams (Atlanta) for four prospects and a established #2 or #3 starting pitcher. The prospects I got back were ranked #4 (Pitcher), #11 (CF), #22 (SS) and #31 (Pitcher) by the OSA. We took a hit from the fans, but I had to do something because we were so close to the World Series and there was no way I was going to be able to stomach just getting a Comp pick when he walked.

Long story short, the #11 and #31 prospects made the team out of Spring Training and the veteran pitcher I got back became my #1 and we made it to the World Series and lost in 7 games. The following year, the #22 prospect came up in early July because of an injury to my starting 2B and he was the missing piece, we ended up winning the World Series that year and 3 of the next 7 overall (we were in 6 of those 7 WS).

The guy I traded, signed an extension for $47.6 mil per season over the next 6 years and continued to be dominant but Atlanta never made it past the divisional round and when he became a free agent at 38, I resigned him to a 2 year deal worth $18 mil and he finished his HoF career with me in the end as in the middle/back of the rotation. The only guy that I got back in that deal that flamed out was the #4 prospect, he had some arm injuries and appeared in only 15 games for me mostly out of the bullpen over 2 season before I released him and he bounced around for a few years before ending up in the Indy Leagues before retiring. The other 4 guys all became regulars for me and kept them for at least 8 seasons.

I just recently had a great package trade work out for me, even though there were times it looked pretty bumpy.

I started out as the Oakland A's in 2022, and decided to just rip off the band-aid and commit to sucking for the year. I began shopping Frankie Montas and Sean Murphy, but realized I'd have better luck netting a king's ransom with them together (similar to the Scherzer-Turner trade last season). Lo and behold, I got a pretty solid return from the Milwaukee Brewers: SP Ethan Small (#66 prospect), 2B/SS Brice Turang (#70), CF Garrett Mitchell (#78), SS Jackson Chourio (#55), SP Alec Bettinger, and $6,000,000 (which I then funneled into the player development budget).

None of these players saw much action in our first season together, 2022, but Small, Turang, Mitchell, and Bettinger saw limited playing time at the end of the year. Bettinger got injured that September and struggled to bounce back, and ended up spending most of 2023 on my AAA team. The other three, however... whew.

Ethan Small exploded as a pitcher, adding a sinker to his repertoire and improving from a middling 3-star prospect to a 4-star top-of-the-rotation guy. He finished 10-12 with a 3.72 ERA in 30 starts, along with a league-leading 94 walks (not ideal) and 193 strikeouts (close to ideal), resulting in a 3.4 WAR rookie season. He still struggles with some control issues, but has become my most reliable starter within a season. He finished fourth in ROTY votes.

Brice Turang also took a pretty big step forward in 2023. While I was hoping to have him start at second, a lengthy injury to my expected shortstop (Nick Allen) gave the job to Turang. He took over, starting more than 100 games at SS for me and contributing a .280/.371/.427 split (AVG/OBP/SLG) in the process. While his defense wasn't great, he still put together a 4.1 WAR season, which was fantastic. He was the runner-up for ROTY.

Garrett Mitchell was the biggest surprise for me, however. With a pretty bloated outfield, I wasn't expecting for him to see much playing time in 2023; if anything, I expected him to platoon at left and play some center. However, a couple of injuries and opportune trades left LF wide open for him to play almost everyday, and he played 150 games for me in 2023, finishing with 28 homers, 69 RBIs (nice), 42 SBs, and a .798 OPS, resulting in a 3.2 WAR season. He ended up winning the ROTY.

I'm now only a month into my 2024 season, and the team is already remarkably improved from where we were a season ago.
