Negro League Conversions?

Is there a database, site, etc. out there that has projected how players from the Negro Leagues would have fared in the majors? If so, I haven't been able to find it.

I keep wanting to add more NeL players to my game but can only include the ones who made the majors (Campanella, Paige, Doby, Jackie, etc.) as of now. I don't want to half-ass it and try and predict how they would have done and make them from scratch - would rather have a "professional stat guy's" input.

what i've done in the past is to go to Seamheads. i take a players best year (or two) and then manually create the player in the game - and edit whatever the game has to the names/numbers i've gotten from Seamheads. I also have an old book " Encyclopedia of The negro Leagues" or something like that - it's in the attic right now - so not certain of the exact title. it has no stats - but gives background and historical info on lots of players, so i can tweak numbers bit that way, also sometimes getting an idea of their defense. It's an old book and out of print when i got it, so not certain how hard (or spendy) it would be anymore.

Perhaps you are referring to "The Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues," by James A. Riley. It's a book that every baseball fan should own.

It has biographical info on players who played only a game or two, as well as those who are very well known. A good number of the entries do include stats, which were drawn from "contemporary press accounts...box scores, scorebooks and written summaries."

YES!! i fully agree that Riley book is essential. i've had a copy for quite a few years and just realized it wasn't in the same stack of other Negro League books i have. So i began a search for it as well last evening. Found it this morning, finally, in of all places - between books of poetry by William Everson.

The book i was talking about in the above post is called "The Encyclopedia Of Negro League Baseball" by Thom Leverro. It is similar to the Riley book. However - the Riley book is more expansive. Together they cover a lot of obscure and lesser known players. Great stuff in my opinion.

There should be a way for the game to adjust Negro league players to the major league level so they can perform at that level. The Negro leagues should be upgraded from a minor league to a major league. I mean these were good tough ballplayers who played through thick and thin. I just cannot wait for their day in the sun in ootp baseball.

There are others who have worked extensively on this in OOTP, because the Negro League ratings are considered equivalent to AAA, and don’t translate well. What is often overlooked is that there were annual post-season games between Negro League players and MLB stars, essentially barnstorming, from the 1920’s until the 1940’s, and records exist. Spoiler, the Negro League stars more than held their own. I would give these stats great weight in formulating realistic ratings. Yes, it’s a relatively small sample size, but more meaningful than Negro League stats that include games against semi-pro and town teams.

Sure but... the Union Association and the Player League are recognize as professional league and neither of them are in OOTP, at least the Negro Leagues, like the Federal League, are even if they are only available if you play with the minor league system on (which I don't since it mess the real trade system).

Never, ever, thought I would see a reference to William Everson here.

But this makes me smile broadly. A long ago fellow book and poetry loving friend turned me onto Everson in the way back days (when I was in my twenties) and even gifted me a signed broadside presentation copy of his poem Blackbird Sundown. (Now I'm thinking that I really need to look her up again the next time I return to my hometown. It looks like she is still alive, still living in my old neighborhood, and now 87 years old. So thanks for this unintentional reminder and prompting.)

Glad someone knew who the heck William Everson was. i thought that mention would go unnoticed. Been ages since i've read that trilogy of books, but whenever i do - i'm again reminded of his greatness. Now got to find my John Berryman's "The Dream Songs" and read those again. Take care and hope you get a chance to revisit your old friend.

Also a Berryman fan, of course.

Bit of a random fact, but the band The Hold Steady has a song called Stuck Between Stations which references Berryman pretty extensively and the video for the song shows one of the band members sitting in a chair reading The Dream Songs prior to the song beginning.

EDIT: Okay, this is the craziest coincidence ever (and I apologize for hijacking this thread with poetry and music talk), but I just looked at my Facebook and the memory that FB is sharing with me today regarding a post I made on this date in 2010 is simply me quoting the main lines about John Berryman from the song I referenced above. Spooky!
