Announcing the Rink Factory

All,

After converting my other web apps to desktop apps, I decided to use the same technology to tackle 2d rinks, based on Flying Canuck's template:

Unlike the other apps there is no online version, just a stand-alone desktop application. Like the other apps it is still cross-platform so you can run it on Windows, macOS or even Linux. Like my other apps you can colorize pretty much every element on the ice (even the ice itself), and you get 20 or so styling options for the center line. The Rink Factory will even create "degraded ice" images as seen elsewhere here on the forum. Admittedly I don't actually have FHM so while I think these should work I haven't actually tested the end result.

You can download the appropriate version for you here:

https://github.com/eriqjaffe/FHM-Rink-Factory

Click on the "Releases" link on the right side of the page and then grab the appropriate verison: .exe for Windows, .dmg for macOS, and either .deb or .rpm depending on your flavor of Linux. Please note that since I am not paying to be an Apple developer you'll have to jump through some hoops to install on macOS, those steps are detailed on the project page as linked above. You might also need to click through some Windows "smart screen" messages as well, again, those steps are on the project page.

As far as I know everything is working as intended but of course there may be things I haven't come across so feel free to let me know and I'll take a look at them time permitting.

This is wonderful! Thank you so much for putting this together. This is easier and much faster than doing it manually.

Pretty cool program. Was messing around with it and have a couple constructive criticims.
1) the scratched up ice pictures are too dark and make the rink turn too grey. Lighten the textures up a bit, maybe?
2) A few of the fonts have the "e" drop signifigantly lower than the rest of the letters.A couple has this happen with the "t"
3) I sit possible to load a previously made rink. It'd be great to edit something I made with teh factory after noticing how it looks in my game.

That should be fairly simple to do.

There really isn't anything I can do about that unfortunately. I think it's just the way fabric.js handles text along paths.

It's theoretically possible, but I've tried doing it with the web apps without success. Of course, the desktop versions aren't limited by a hosting company so I may play around with that again.

Wow!

Thanks a lot for this. Very easy to use.

I have made a couple of rinks, but they are not showing up in my game.

What names should be on the rink files (they are in the correct folder).

Maybe I am namingn them incorrectly (the files are in the correct folder).

From what I understand, the rink files need to be named in the following format: rink_<city>_<nickname>_0.png through rink_<city>_<nickname>_3.png

So "rink_anaheim_ducks_0.png," "rink_anaheim_ducks_1.png" and so on. If you're adding years to the rinks that might be throwing things off - OOTP knows what to do with those years in the file name, and apparently FHM doesn't. If that's not it, then I really don't know what the problem is.

Yeah, that's likely it, the years aren't working for those files right now. We'll try to get those added in the last update.

Thanks all.

It did not work at first, but is working now (for some reason).

It must have been how I was naming the files.

Version 0.2.0-beta has been released.

New features in this release:
  • Exported ice textures are lighter.
  • A border has been added to the center ice text to help separate it from any images you place on the ice. This can be toggled on and off like the center line and circle borders.
  • The app will now produce a .zip file containing all four images and a .rink file. What is a .rink file? Read on!
  • You can now reload rinks into Rink Factory. The .rink file is really just a JSON file that can be reloaded into Rink Factory so you can edit an existing rink.

Custom fonts will not load when you reload a rink, however. If you used a custom font it will default back to Rubik on reload. This may not be fixable.

FYI, I think I may have figured out a way to deal with re-loading custom fonts as well.
