The Hockey News?

Does anyone subscribe to The Hockey News?

How many print editions are there for an entire year(season plus off season)?

Pretty sure it was weekly back in the day. Haven't read it in almost 20 years though.

Had a subscription for most of the 1970s as a kid. It was weekly during the season and once a month over the summer. Like Dfyvie I have not looked it in in well over 20 years so no idea if it is even still around anymore.

It's still around. Not as good as it was in the 70s, or even the 90s, when I first subscribed to it, but it's okay-ish, when the puff pieces aren't too puffy, and the "Look at me, I'm rich!" publisher isn't in danger of breaking his arm from patting himself on the back. The tabloid format has long since gone by the wayside, in favor of a more traditional magazine layout.

Pros: Full color, the writing quality is probably better.

Cons: They have like maybe three full-time writers now, who aren't bad, but are maybe stretched a bit thin at times. Also, minor-league coverage is practically non-existent compared to what it was even a decade ago. The number of issues isn't what is was back in the day...only 16 a year!

I still subscribe, but they've recently sold out their website to be just the hockey arm of Sports Illustrated, so the writing may be on the wall for the once venerable Hockey News, I fear. The aforementioned publisher is a guy who's tried more than once to become an NHL team owner, so he may just be using this to get in good with the league as a stepping stone to a future ownership post or league office job.

This brings back good memories... Another avid reader back in the day... I guess it changed, I changed and the world changed. After all that, it just ain't what it used to be.

I agree with what has been said. I used to subscribe, off and on, from the 70s thru the 90s, and loved it. Do read it once awhile now, but while print quality is much better and is in color is not near as good coverage of hockey as it used to be. What I loved back then was the International coverage and minor league coverage. Back then you did not have the internet, and the HN was the only place to get that coverage for hockey. No longer subscribe, but do pick it up a few times a year. Still when looking for coverage of NHL, I still find the HN to be pretty good for that. Still like to check them out when they have draft issues or prospect issues.

Sorry to hear about the Hockey News website. I did not realize that. Had not visited in awhile, but used to be pretty good. Now will probably take off favorites. Never was much of a fan of SI, and their coverage of sports.

I am an active subscriber and have been off and on for about 20 years (more off if I am honest). I do it to get the yearbook issue and occasionally there are other things I like but the Athletic provides better Hockey coverage these days. With that plus the website now being just another page on the SI page, this will be my last year as a subscriber. Still like THN podcast but even that is nowhere near as good as the SN "32 Thoughts" podcast for in-depth coverage and commentary.

I usually let my subscription lapse so I could re-sign up to get the free gift...still have several THN keychains
