How to set a custom game with historical teams?

How to set a custom game with historical teams? I was wondering how to do this. I was going to import teams, but the initial draft was full of players which would be a problem with my historical teams. I would like to have no players at the beginning and import my teams. Any suggestions?

Good question.

If I get my current custom league working properly then I would like to in a future season add some historical WHA/NHL teams .

Unlike OOTP there is no known way (unless there is and neither I nor anyone else knows it) to create a custom league with historical teams from different years and dump all of the players into a Fantasy Draft or keep all of the players on their teams and let things play out.

Start a game with just 6 teams in the Top League. Once you load into it (and starting on July 1st), go to TEAM > Edit. You can retire all players.

Once you have that done, go to the League > Edit screen. You can then import historical teams. Import a couple, delete the AI generated ones, and keep importing until you have all the teams you want. Put them in whatever conferences (adjust your playoffs as well), generate a new schedule, and you should more or less be good to go.

The only issue would be free agents, and I'm not sure off the top of my head if there's anything you could do besides manually retiring them.

Just keep in mind the Historical Import issue with some names being changed is affecting this right now, so you may want to wait post-next update.

Assuming this works, how would you affiliate AHL teams (if you chose to have an AHL) with the teams you've added?

Put yourself in Commish Mode, go to Edit Team. You can set affiliations there.
