Haha. All great answers to my late night rant... Is there any good reason why my 4-star FA SP signing has 4 starts, has gone a mere 15 IP with a 12.00 ERA?

Yes, they mean something. No, you shouldn't use them to evaluate players.

One small use of star ratings for me is when I am shopping a player and get a long list of potential offers from other teams. Rather than click on every one, I scan the star ratings and look for, say, at least three stars (or more) actually and/or three stars or more potential. That way I can screen out the lesser guys in whom I would have no interest. But even with this rough screening, I sometimes am surprised by the actual ratings, which do not seem to correspond with the stars.

I generally just use them at a quick glance then check the player profile.
Maybe you'd like the alternate number rating system more? |

Never use them. So annoying. How comical would it be for a GM to see a scout's report using the "star" system. That scout would probably get fired.
The last version of FHM I have is version 5, and that's what is so annoying about that game. You can't turn them off. Maybe that has changed, don't know, but a definite turn off for me. |

20-80, Increments of 5. That's where it's at. Real ones know.

I think I have gotten used to them being there, but maybe will try switching to the 20-80 scale per other people's suggestions. Anyways, wound up trading the FA signing (went 7 starts with an ERA above 10 and no other metrics indicating he was coming back) for a "lower star" player who wound up performing much better until he got a season ending injury. So goes the game... |
