Player treating in-season negotiations like a bidding war
First time I see this in an extension negotiation.
I offered the guy an extension and he agreed/liked it. Couple days later he comes back like nah, thought better, want lambo. Ok, this happens on occassion, so I make better offer that he agrees/likes. Couple days later he comes back and again asks for more. At this point I'm confused since I hadn't seen this happen twice like this ever for an extension. He's gone on and hit several HRs since we started negotiating. Maybe that has an effect? Maybe he just got hit with a positive tcr during negotiations, of all times, that my scout hasn't picked up? Or is this just a flat chance (thinking about it/accepting then reneging) and could theoretically happen indefinitely? |

I had a guy who asked for more as we fell farther behind the division leaders. So I traded him to team half a game ahead of us. Which ended up finishing behind us!

I've had that happen a lot with high greed, low loyalty pitchers but strangely never with position players.

something changed in meantime for sure... the game uses qualifications. either it's over a line or behind it... relative to whatever flavor GM's and such have to emulate variety of choices.
scouting update occured? maybe even a new month that coincides with a scouting update? or not? just rhetorical possibilities... Beware of extensions... they have a differently-tabulated pool of money in part determining value of contract (*or range that the player will accept) among other factors. In some contexts they can be much more expensive than they would be on FA market. |

Larry McCall reneged on me in this fashion on consecutive years for example and he has high greed, low loyalty and is disruptive. He is a stud in my save, so it was worth dealing with the escalating demands to not lose him to FA. |

I had a player who I was looking to extend, but he was asking for $31M+/7 yrs. I didn't have enough budget room for that, so I "low-balled" him at $24M+/7 yrs. Apparently that insulted him (I would love to be insulted like that), and he came back with $71M+/7 yrs. I just had to laugh at that.

GM of the Braves with owner goals ON. He wants me to extend Charlie Morton. When I start with a 3 yr at his current rate and the 2nd and 3rd team options with bump up and decent buyout, he balks and asks for a 5 or 6 year deal at more than current salary. At this point I am unsure as to what to do. If you pull the offer, they get pissed and it affects your GM reputation with other players. So... I just didn't respond anymore. If anyone has a better or even neutral alternative I would like to hear it. Personally, I want to see an option as GM so that I can respond with "That is not a realistic request from my point-of-view", or something similar that lets the player know you are not close in negotiations. The current change and resubmit mechanic seems pretty clunky to me. Oh... and I just got reminded of this on MLB Central at 10 this morning when they announced Charlie signed a 1 year extension for the current $20M. **sigh**

do not low-ball a high demand... Entering a bid early locks you in at that high price... unless that's been changed, you won't be successful later on when their demand drops and you try to re-submit.... also upsetting them pulling previous bid on top of that.
wait for the demand to drop before submitting a bid. never a perfect prognistication, but can be fairly accurate once familiar with your league. look over state of teams 'interested' in the player too. the verbage we get in response is tied to something quantitative as opposed to random, so take note of what they say as it definitely tips their hand in some respects. there may be several phrases per category. |
