Primarily New Player, need help in a couple areas

So I picked up OOTP'21 after having had (I think) OOTP'16.

I've been playing around with it a bit, and I'm still as lost as I was regarding a couple of aspects of the game.

Namely, the Farm system and trades.

I'm hoping someone on here can offer some useful advice in these areas or point me to a forum thread (or several) with good advice.

1. How do you know when to promote / demote a player in the farm system?
2. How to best evaluate trades? I see the initial response from my scouting director to a trade when he says, "This seems like a raw deal for us", but then I don't really understand how to choose which players should be used to sweeten the pot (or, in teh other direction, when should I seriously look into trading a player, and how to best determine what to ask for him in return??
