Starting 60-team league. Help name my teams
So I has this idea that I'd start a new fictional league and rather than start over with the MLB teams/fictional players like I've done over and over multiple times, I thought I'd start a true fictional universe: fictional teams, players, stadiums, logos, the works!
For some reason 60 teams seemed like a good idea. 1 league, 10 divisions, 6 teams in each division. The hard part of getting this thing started was naming all the teams. Here's what I have so far. Northeast Division Maine Lobsters Boston Pilgrims New York Emperors Rhode Island Reds Toronto Mounties (thanks snarls200 !!!) Montreal Expos Mid-Atlantic Division Philadelphia Quakers Maryland Blue Crabs Delaware Atlantics Washington Imperials Richmond Monarchs South Jersey Shorebirds Southern Division Mississippi Rebels Georgia Alligators Miami Pelicans Jacksonville Barracuda Alabama Copperheads Carolina Reapers Ohio Valley Division Cleveland Spiders (although I think this name may be revived by MLB soon) Cincinnati Royals (thanks snarls200 !!!) Kentucky Colonels Pittsburgh Ironmen (open to anything better) Louisville Sluggers West Virginia Miners Northern Division Minnesota Ice Fishers Wisconsin Gophers Chicago Zebras Winnipeg Yeti Detroit Automakers Dakota Wolves Mid-West Division Iowa Centurions Kansas City Scouts (thanks snarls200 !!!) St. Louis Owls Omaha Tornadoes Indianapolis Truckers Memphis Blue Sox ((thanks ptFri217 !!!) Texarkana Division Dallas Longhorns Houston Armadillos San Antonio Alamos Oklahoma Bloodhounds Arkansas Catfish Shreveport Bullfrogs North West Division Seattle Dragons Oregon Otters Boise Bison Wyoming Stallions Alaska Eskimos Calgary Caribou South West Division Colorado Mountain Cats Santa Fe Fire Ants Phoenix Firebirds (just realized 2 fire names - may have to replace one) Las Vegas Aces (thanks ptFri217 !!!) Salt Lake Scorpions El Paso Cactus California Division Los Angeles Stars San Diego Sharks San Francisco Earthquakes Oakland Outlaws San Jose Vipers California (based in Fresno) Condors Would really like to hear some ideas to help name some of these nameless teams, or even a good replacement. Been trying to come up with names all day and it's making my head hurt. Thanks! Last edited by Lucas718; 05-16-2021 at 10:33 PM. Reason: updates |

I should mention I'd like to avoid using current real team names wherever possible, but am ok with teams from the past - so Montreal Expos good, Kansas City Royals bad.

Some of my thoughts that I hope might be helpful:
Las Vegas Aces (obvious) or Las Vegas Six-Siders (less obvious) Denver Donkeys Oregon Trailriders (or something trail related) Memphis - I’ve used the city nickname “Bluff City” and gone with Bluff City BlueCats. Also used “Midsouth” Travelers/Voyagers with a wolf logo, a nod to the area’s Wolf River, named for the tour guide who passed away on de la Salle’s expedition Iowa Dreamers (as in Field of Dreams) Chicago Colts (historic) |

If you’re into “-Sox” you could always have a few that don’t have a better name and give them a color. Some contemporary “-Sox” I’ve thought of are:
Toronto Maple Sox Atlanta Peach Sox Jacksonville Orange Sox Wisconsin Cheese Sox Chicago Wind Sox (kinda close to White Sox though) Iowa Corn Sox Memphis Blue Sox (as in Blues music. Or just Memphis Blues now that I think about it) Denver Rocky Sox (ouch!) That’s all I got for now haha. Enjoy making the league! |

Been updating the first post as I thought of new names, or went with suggestions from others. We're now down to 2
Cincinnati & Kansas City Let's hear what you've got. I'm out of ideas right now. |

Now the fun really begins... trying to find or create logos, uniforms, and ballparks for all these. Fortunately there are plenty of threads from the talented folks here who have already created a lot of that stuff.

For the Cleveland team, I have never been a fan of the Spiders nickname and hope they do not use that name when they change the teams name. I usually go with Buckeyes to pay homage to the Negro League team, plus there are some great logos and uniforms in the Mods section.
In my current fictional league, I had the Cleveland Buckeyes relocate to Columbus (created an all Ohio division) and Cleveland got an expansion team called the Cleveland Foresters to play off Cleveland being called The Forest City. |
