National Baseball Association: A Fictional League from 1900-present

The National Baseball Association was officially formed in early winter of 1899 with play ready to begin by April of 1900. The NBA was a collective association of former baseball clubs from the two "major" leagues that dominated the Central and Eastern United States for 20 years. Both the Eastern Baseball Association and the Federal Baseball League operated from 1880 until 1899 when they decided to fold and give way to the NBA. This thread will be a collective history of the NBA from its origins to a multi-league universe. I will try to post in increments from each decade including winners, stats, awards, etc. Shoutout to the many different content creators on these forums for many of the teams, stadiums and more that I use throughout this universe, and another shoutout to RyMACTizzle, because I've always had a hard time planning out the world history of a fictional league but his development of a baseball universe really appealed to what I wanted to do so I am basing a portion of some of the fictional league's that come into this universe on his world history spreadsheet.

So we begin...

Pre-NBA Baseball

Baseball was quickly growing in the United States by 1860 and by 1877 there were people talking about the formation of a professional baseball league. In 1880, those echoed ideas became a reality as stockholders from New York announced the creation of two independently operated leagues that would run throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall each year. While citizens were excited, it was not an easy task to accomplish. Originally only wanting one 8-team league to operate in the East, the demand for cities to have a professional baseball team was high, and eventually one league turned into two independent leagues, one dubbed as the Eastern Baseball Association, and the other known as the Federal Baseball League. The EBA quickly gained the reputation as the premier league due to the placement of teams in more populated areas of the country rather than the FBL, but both leagues were able to operate efficiently during their tenure.

In the Spring of 1880, both the EBA and FBL were ready for their inaugural seasons. Let's take a look at the teams that would lay the groundwork as America's first professional baseball clubs

Eastern Baseball Association
East Division
Brooklyn Baseball Club
Boston Baseball Club
Queens Baseball Club
Baltimore Baseball Club

Central Division
Pittsburgh Baseball Club
Toledo Baseball Club
Philadelphia Baseball Club
Washington Baseball Club

Federal Baseball League
Continental Division
Buffalo Baseball Club
Cleveland Baseball Club
New York City Baseball Club
Chicago Baseball Club

Federal Division
Cincinnati Baseball Club
Chicago Players Club
Detroit Baseball Club
Manhattan Baseball Club

By 1896, even with the two leagues operating independent of one another, there was talk that league officials wanted to downsize to one major professional league, but were unsure of which league would serve fit to absorb the other league's teams. Eventually, both leagues decided it would be in the best interest to merge, rather than one stay operating. This merger would effectively end both leagues but a large majority of the teams in each league would be picked up by the new professional league. Dubbed the National Baseball Association, the NBA was going to be the premier baseball league in the United States for years to come. Of the 16 total teams from both combined leagues, the NBA was asking a steep price range to be accepted into the new league, which resulted in four teams not being able to make it. There four teams were..

Brooklyn Baseball Club: low funds the last few years in EBA; NBA decided against having multiple teams in the greater NYC area
Buffalo Baseball Club: unable to afford cost to join NBA
Manhattan Baseball Club: NBA decided against having multiple teams in greater NYC area
Queens Baseball Club: owner sold in 1899 due to bankruptcy; NBA decided against having multiple teams in greater NYC area

Still having aspirations for joining a major league, the four teams left out went on to form the Independent Baseball League, a separate league off of the NBA with hopes to challenge for being the premier league in America. Having only four teams was too little, so the IBL founded four new franchises thanks to multiple generous donations from shareholders in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Fast forward to the Spring of 1900, both leagues are ready to kick-off the inaugural seasons, with the divisions looking like this for each.

National Baseball Association
East Division
Baltimore Braves (formerly Baltimore Baseball Club of EBA)
New York Kings (formerly New York City Baseball Club of FBL)
Philadelphia Liberty (formerly Philadelphia Baseball Club of EBA)
Washington Senators (formerly Washington Baseball Club of EBA)
Boston Rebels (formerly Boston Baseball Club of EBA)
Pittsburgh Steamers (formerly Pittsburgh Baseball Club of EBA)

Central Division
Detroit Calvary (formerly Detroit Baseball Club of FBL)
Cincinnati Sluggers (formerly Cincinnati Baseball Club of FBL)
Chicago Fire (formerly Chicago Baseball Club of FBL)
Toledo Brewers (formerly Toledo Baseball Club of EBA)
Cleveland Phantoms (formerly Cleveland Baseball Club of FBL)
Chicago Wizards (formerly Chicago Players Club of FBL)

As for the IBL, their divisions looked like this

Independent Baseball League

Brooklyn Black Sox (formerly Brooklyn Baseball Club of EBA)
Charlotte Mustangs (formerly Buffalo Baseball Club of FBL)
Providence Jays (founded 1899)
Syracuse Legion (founded 1899)
