Yet another...

I have been poking through this forum, and found this is not an uncommon problem...

Since downloading the 5.10 patch, I have been having major issues with OOTP. Whenever I try to start a game, or go to the manager screen, or create an HTML report (say...my minors report), the game gives me the ol' ootp5.exe has caused an error, Windows will close it.

What's bugging me is that this doesn't ever happen right away. Now, I have created three leagues since getting the 5.10 patch, and have been having this issue with all of them. I'll go through the process of structuring my league, signing coaches, drafting players, setting my limeups, etc, etc, etc. But when it comes time to check my owner's expectations for the year, or start playing the first game of the year, I get the crash. And this has happened with all three leagues I have created.

In case it is relevant, this is how I set up my league:

2 leagues, 2 divisions each. 7 teams per division in one league, 6 per division in another. Fictional players, blank records, year: 1977. 162 games per team. No, do not start a new manager career yet. Leave the cities as the names already there.

And the league generates fine.

After that, I tweak my set up. I rename the awards to what I want (Most Outstanding (whatever) Award), rename the playoffs (League/World Championship), turn off DHs for both leagues, rename the leagues and divisions themselves, put my ratings on Traditional and lock it, and set the amateur draft to 7 rounds. I move teams into their proper divisions, and rename teams like Arizona or Florida to a team that got cut-off because I chose less than 30 for my league. I then enter the teams' names, as well as assign the proper stadiums, and put the real logos with the proper teams.

I then have the computer go through the coach signing process (to keep me from going and signing all the outstanding coaches), and then have the computer complete the initial draft (drafts always get tedious for me after about 10 rounds).

It is at this point that I create my manager character, and sign with Pittsburgh.

After that, I set my depth charts, move guys between levels, cut bums, sign slightly-better-bums, etc.

It is at this point the game will consistly begin to crash on me when I try playing out a game or viewing my manager info.

I have not tried setting a league up any other way to see if this happens. Any other way is not how I want my league set up, so I don't plan on seeing if it's an issue with the league setup.

My computer is running Windows XP Professional. 1.20 ghz, 256 MB RAM. DirectX 9.0. All of my drivers are completely up to date. I have tried changing the skin, turning on/off Direct3D and sound, in all combinations. I have tried unlicensing, uninstalling, reinstalling and relicensing. I have tried exiting and restarting OOTP, as well as shutting down and restarting my computer. But when I go back to my league and try to do anything, it crashes.

In the background, I have had one instance each of Mozilla and AIM running. My anti-virus is running real-time protection.

However, none of this was ever an issue before the 5.1 patch. Never had this problem crop up before, except when something else caused an OS crash, which would mess up OOTP. But that has not happened any of the three times I've been getting this. If there is no known solution to this, I would at least like to be able roll back my version of OOTP until this problem is addressed, which I can't do right now because I had forgotten to back up my .exe. But I'd much rather not have to roll back.

Have you tried switching the browser that the game uses to open the html reports and see if that helps.

That did fix the crash on viewing reports (I had been using Mozilla for that, and switched back to the OOTP browser).

But it still crashes when I try to go into a game or view my manager info.

FYI, this is the EXACT same problem I have been having. Same circumstances (except mine isn't a custom league). Same results. Crashes at the exact same times (when i try to start a game or go to check the manager screen).

Of course, i don't have an ansnwer to all this. but at least you're not alone...

Were you doing a standard league? Because that was my next try...to just create a standard league and mess with the structure and what not that way. But I'm not going through the trouble if that's not going to work, either.

Yes, this was with a standard league. I have tried it with at least three different standard leagues. I'm currently trying it not in manager mode to see if that makes a difference. i'll let you know once i can sneak out of work to do it...

My computer also has almost the same specs as yours (XP, 1.2 gHz, 256 MB RAM, DirectX 9.0), except that i wasn't using Mozilla...

I'm having a very similar problem as well...hopefully someone will be able to get some answers for us. I'd really love to sim the game, and manage my team, but OOTP seems to hate me.

Anybody else think it would be really funny if Steve changed his avatar to a fly swapper?

Progress maybe?????

I went through all of my league files. I have been using the totalminors rosters for all of my leagues. Turns out that with copying/pasting/transferring from one computer to another, some of the files and folders end up as "read-only" and/or "archive" when you look at the file/folder preferences. I went through each folder and subfolder and changed it to ensure that every file did not have any of those boxes checked.

Since then....no crashes.....regardless of whether I am in manager mode or not. dunno why it might make a difference, but at least i can play not without fear of my game crashing....

Hope this helps.
