Negative "you missed the playoffs you're a failure" e mail
This is from 21 but I have seen nothing indicating its changed for 22. If it has changed, well great... unless the new version is more negative to the point of being outright nasty!!! Anyway, here goes.
The year is 2001. Here's the second paragraph This is the club's 4th playoff miss in a row. They last appeared in the postseason in 1997. In the last 10 seasons the Pirates have missed the playoffs 7 times. In total the Pirates have missed the playoffs 36 times in their 50 year history. Pittsburgh has won the World Series 5 times in their history. This is probably OK for the current situation where a third of the teams in each league make the playoffs. Kinda. Missing 7 of the last 10 playoffs is a 1/3 a miss more than the expected number of misses. Missing 36 times in 50 years is 1/2 a time more often than expected. So even with a modern playoff system, this is NOT a bad performance. This e mail IS appropriate for someone in a league where the Divisions are four teams each and first place an second place makes it. Or the same organization which also has a 28 team league where the 16 best records make the playoffs. Think about that. Sixteen out of 28 teams make the post season. OK, if you recognize yourself don't jump uf and defend your system. Its not about that, but these e mails ARE for the people in leagues like yours that don't qualify for the post season. This team is in league that started in 1951 and expanded normally through 1993. However it remained with two 7 team Divisions 1994 on to 2001. (There was not expansion for 1998) Probability of winning the NL Pennant (or Division Championship after those were devised) is 14%. The team won the Pennant (before Divisional play) or the Division title 28% of the time. Here you go... The Pirates were eliminated from the post season today after an unusually poor year. The team last won its Division in 1997. In the past ten years the team has qualified for the post season three times. It has qualified 15 times in its 51 year history and has won the World Series 5 times. |

What's negative about it? You're being given some statistics about your teams record over a period of time. I don't see anywhere in the email where it labels you a failure.

The word "miss" or "missed" is used three times in the context of failure.
Perhaps because of my sales background I'm more aware of the desirability of using positive words. |

Whether not it was "unusually poor" would depend on how ever far back you're looking. Probably can just take off everything from "after..." and not really change the first part at all. The second part is just stating the recent history. No where does it say if it was a good or bad stretch. That will depend on the player and their expectations. I think you might be just being a little over sensitive? Like others have said I don't see anything in that at all where it says "you are a failure" heck, they make refences of the Twins not winning a post season game since 2004 all the time. It's a statistic and a fact. Nothing you can do about it until the Twins actually break that streak.
It's like stating that the Bills have been to a number of Super Bowls and have never won any. At least this states that they have been in the playoffs more than 50% of the seasons they have played. Look for the positives over the negatives.

It's probably because you didn't make the playoffs
I'm not entirely sure as I've never paid attention to it before, but if you had made the playoffs it would probably start talking about all the other times you had made the playoffs, or in other words... positively.

Outside of ego or how it “feels”, I’m pretty sure it affects your “score” at the end of the season. I have a league where every team makes the playoffs (6 team league with a ladder tournament after a regular season for seeding) and my score is always higher than in past leagues though this may be coincidence. While not a huge deal, it could affect perfect points earned in competitive mode.
