Jeff, I was wondering how do you arrive at ratings?
Jeff, I was wondering how do you arrive at ratings?
First, I like to say I think your ratings are excellent. I like the historical aspect of the game so I was wondering how you develop ratings. I imagine scoring is probably easy to assess but some of these other ratings may be harder given the lack of data historically compared to present-day. I’m sure the community would like to know what process you use. For example, historically, a Bobby Orr or Bobby Hull speed rating is easier than that of a Jim Pappin rating in 1969. I also wonder what sources you utilize. Thanks

Yes, I understand the ratings systems: Attributes concepts. But, I was wondering how they rated historical players when data was not so rich as it is currently in the NHL. I am a historian by nature in many things and enjoy rating things. Depending on your age and what era you started watching various players in the NHL I was wondering what the process they used to rate the NHL players that where more obscure or middle or the road in the past. The example I used was Jim Pappin of the Black Hawks. I Watched him play against the Bruins, but I could not tell you how he rated in speed vs Orr. Orr was great with his speed as indicated in the game, but how do you arrive at Pappin's score? I am not asking for trade secrets, but general guidelines for historical purposes as a fan of the game and the Historical NHL. It is interesting subject to me.
