I have an outfield prospect that had some good infield defensive ratings, so I force started him at 3B to get some flexibility given the strength and youth of my current outfield.
After a few weeks, I noticed that he wasn't showing 3B as a new position. I went into the editor and saw that he had zero experience. Then I tested it by manually setting it to 100, and no position rating was calculated, nor did anything show up on his main profile screen. Note: This online league was imported from 21. |

A wild guess....he throws LH.
If that is the case, forget about having him play any IF position except 1B. Being LH, I know that this is really unfair. LOL But it is also realistic. I don't think a LH has played 2B-SS-3B in the modern era of MLB. If someone has, I'm sure the baseball historians will correct me. If my guess about him being LH is wrong, I have no further explanation. Last edited by Dave Stieb II; 04-08-2021 at 10:20 AM. |

Yep, left handers do not learn any other IF positions than 1B.

I had a player in OOTP 21 that needed around 35 starts at second base to get any ratings at that position, but is very strange when you edit the experience in the player editor and doesn't show any development.

Fun fact: Squires is also the last lefty to play catcher in an AL game. |

From the OOTP manual
'DH - 1B - LF - RF - 3B - CF - 2B - SS. Generally speaking, the further to the right, the harder the position is to play and the harder it will be to convert a player to that position. Position players can learn to play catcher, but it often takes a very long time, and they typically don't make very good ones.' So a cf can learn 3B faster than an LF/RF. I've been doing ok with player learning positions following this logic. |

It would be nice if...
The new coaches who you can assign to help fielding would allow you to tell them to work with a certain player to learn a certain position and they would gain a little experience over a period of time. Then you would not have to wait till spring training or play them out of position for them to get experience. I have an average SS that I would like to switch to 2B because he is killing my defense. But he has a great bat.
