Diamonds in the Rough
I have yet to play a league where I've gotten into my 10th season or so, and I was just curious if there are some people out there who have actually had a low drafted rookie, who wasn't projected to be that great, actually turn out to be something good? Share your stories if you can.

Couple guys who surprised in our league.
Michael Scott - 4th round pick who has developed into one of, if not the top hitter in the league. Richard Crouse - 6th rounder who has developed into a .300 30 100 2b. Ezra Colon - was a 4th round pick who was cut, resigned and now the reigning Rookie of the Year. Just a few off the top of my head. Dont cut those late rounders less ya have to.

I once drafted a guy in the fifth and final round named Kenneth Gartman, and I waived him shortly after because he wasn't very good. Well, a few years later he surfaced on Milwaukee's major league roster with pretty decent ratings and ended up in 6th place on the all-time stolen base chart.

Well...I suppose I had one...but I included him in a package deal that sent him off to Kansas city. He was a first baseman...a 4 star prospect who's in the big leagues. (Still blue stars, not sure when they'll turn gold/yellow). Anyways, I'm pretty much kicking myself for it, since the outfielder I received is only batting .220 and all. Every week, that prospect I traded ends up in the news headlines one way or another, and already has 26 home runs. I'm beginning to think I need a new scouting director or something...

This one seems to fit the bill:
The down's and up's and down's and up's of Noel Biggerstaff Down Drafted in 10th round, 273rd overall pick, by Colorado in 2083... Injured on 5/2/2084 with a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle, out for 3 weeks... Injured on 4/8/2085 with a Fractured Knee, out for 8 weeks... Injured on 4/17/2086 with a Blurred Vision Eye, out for 2 weeks... Injured on 5/28/2086 with a Inflamed Thigh Muscle, out for 1-2 weeks... Up Was selected to the 2089 Allstar game... Was selected to the 2090 Allstar game... Won Batting Title in 2090, hitting .330 with 50 HR, 128 RBI... Was selected to the 2091 Allstar game... Won Batting Title in 2091, hitting .303 with 52 HR, 130 RBI... Down Again Injured on 6/29/2092 with a Broken Knee, out for full season... (only batting .260 with 15HR at the time) Up Again (not like '90 and '91, but not too shabby) 5 year averages from '93 - '97: .289, 174 hits, 30 HR, 97 RBI's Was selected to the 2094 Allstar game... Was selected to the 2095 Allstar game... Won World Series with Oakland in 2096... Went from 3.5 stars early in career to (I think) 2.5 after knee injury and has now risen to 4 stars at age 34. Not bad for a 10th rounder. |

I once saw this guy come out of nowhere and start tearing up the league. A starting pitcher, drafted in the 5th round, he just lit the league up. For one and one half seasons he went 40-4 and then he suffered a career ending injury. I was tempted to "edit" his injury but, in the end, I felt that this was the way it was suppose to be...

Little bit different scenario, in my league there's a guy on the 2018 Royals (not my team) named Simon Martinez. Was a very ho-hum shortstop for awhile, averaging about 7 homers a season his first four complete years in the league. Then suddenly in 2014 he hits 41 homers and hasn't hit below that number since. What took him so long to discover 'roids?
