Free Agency "Demand" column
I've been keeping a close eye on a few free agents I want to sign, and like most posts I've read things get a lot more reasonable after a week or so into the FA period. Though I am mad that I failed an owner goal because Nelson Cruz wanted 5 years $187 million for an extension.
The particular FA in question is Andrelton Simmons. He started out demanding 13 million per year for 7 years, and I initially offered a contract of 2/24. He came back a few days later "willing to revisit" and now I see that his demand number in the Free Agent tab is down to $5,650,000, which I would sign him for 2 years in a heartbeat at that rate. My question is, is that the figure he's really looking for on an AAV basis? When I go into the offer contract screen it just brings up my last offer, not what he wants. I don't want to offer a terrible contract and kill negotiations. |

I've seen a number of different scenarios related to the free agency period. Most of the time, player demands will drop if no team meets their demands. That is likely what is happening in your case with Simmons.
The other situation I've seen is that a player wants to start a bidding war so they lower their demand to see what teams are really interested. This is likely the case for Simmons since it's only a week into free agency. If it was a week before spring training started, that would be a different story. I would make an offer base on the number of years you'd want him for an offer $7-8 million and see what the response is. If he likes the offer, you may hear back from him in a couple days saying a different team offered a bigger deal and now you know it's the bidding war scenario. |

And I'd be willing to sign him for up to 10 million or so, so you're right that I should offer him a bit more than his asking and see what happens. I wonder if he'll just accept an offer around 8 since it's ~1.5x his ask rather than start a bidding war. Thanks! |
