Change saved_game directory on MacOS (using MacOS App Store version)

Years ago, on a Windows laptop, I was able to configure the game to boot saved games off a flash drive or cloud-based drive. I have since switched over to MacOS, and have OOTP 21 from the MacOS App Store.

Is there a way to effectively boot saved games from either a flash drive or cloud-based drive using OOTP 21 version from the MacOS App Store? Whenever I try to redirect the Custom Data Path under Expert settings, the game crashes and I have to uninstall and reinstall it back to default settings.

If any other Mac users have found the secret method for doing this, please walk me through how you did it without the game crashing.
