Washington Football Team: Missed Opportunity

Not a Washington fan but I think the temporary name they use is just bland and generic. The use of the word "Team" makes it sounds like a kid who rushed building this team for his custom league in Madden because he didn't have time to think of a mascot.

Washington has such a long history, they could have just gone the route of Association Football and gone with Washington Football Club and called it a day and it would have been glorious. Washington F.C. est. 1932. Now that's something.

*Conspiracy alert*

I don't think Dan Snyder cared one lick how ridiculous the name looked. In truth, I think he named it something as ridiculous at the Washington Football Team as a way to thumb his nose at the people who "forced" him to drop Redskins. As in, "You don't like Redskins? Fine. Then call it the Football Team all year."

The Washington Football Team is used because the NFL and Courts will not stand behind THE OWNER using the team name , history, and established marketing as he wants . I prefer tradition and calling them the REDSKINS . I think it is a disgrace that people are offended.

Look at other names ---
Raiders ----- images of killing , looting , stealing, ...... all offend me more.
Buccaneers ----- same as above
Chiefs --- upset by Redskins ( ???? )
Cowboys ---- if you can be upset by Redskins then ......
Patriots -- images of rebellion , killing , establishing a new order or maintaining current order

Why are Colts in Indy and not Baltimore ?
Why are Titans in Tenn. and not in New York ?

Where are Texans ? OH ! team moved from Dallas to Kansas City ...
Where are Oilers ? OH ! team moved from Houston to Tenn ......
Where are Cardinals - this year ?

How did TEXANS get used by Houston - When the team name (TEXANS) is in Kansas City Chiefs history ?

Confusing .....

Umm...it got changed because FedEx said they would drop their sponsorship of the team.
No more, no less

Also, Nike, Gatorade, Adidas, PepsiCO, and others were also going to drop their sponsorship.

Reading anything else into it is ridiculous. This was a pure money move because even Daniel Synder was not willing to fund the team out of his own pocket after the corporate world quit sending payments to the team.

I intentionally left out any talk of their former name to avoid this and this is right where everyone goes. I'll just say this if you aren't Native American (and no being 1/32 part Cherokee because your great-great-grandpa married an Indian Princess doesn't make you Native American) then you really don't have a leg to stand on to say it's right or wrong.

I briefly rejoined the OT forum to check on this: Soon, this thread is likely to be the SIXTH thread on this topic over there.

Name: Image0242.jpg
Views: 565
Size: 242.5 KB

Three of them were mine. I am sorry. I assure you that I had the best of intentions. Even for the short-lived 'Please, no more "Washington Redskins" threads!' thread.

Heh, nobody listens to me.

Professional American football people-who-play-together are called "teams," not "clubs." There is no history of them being called clubs so it wouldn't make any sense to call them Washington Football Club.

Likely that, and I'm thinking it's a temporary name that - once they've milked all they can out of WFT merch - will be replaced by a permanent one - and thus more merch sales. Which will make Snyder's thumbing of his nose all that more effective, since it will be profitable, too.

You spend millions (more like billions ) on a Sports franchise . You own it and operate it under ** A NAME ** for 21 years ...... then are told by others with no $$$$ in the team to change name ...IDEA --- Baseball wants to expand Brooklyn bids on a new team and wants "Dodgers" team name since it started there ......... BY THE WAY - that is what happened with the Browns in NFL .

A new baseball team wants to use " Monarchs" Kansas City is upset because of the names ties to Kansas City and Negro Baseball League ( muesum in Kansas City )

Philly and Kansas City also have ties to team name Athletics ....

Pilots used by Seattle ..

Back to NFL -- Cleveland Browns moved from Cleveland to Baltimore > became Ravens .... NFL grants a new expansion team to Cleveland THEY allow the NEW FRANCHISE to take the name Browns >>>> but they also took the tradition of the CURRENT Baltimore Ravens ...... but the RAVENS did not take the tradition of previous Baltimore team (COLTS) .....

And where do you put Cardinals ? Chicago , St. Louis , Arizona ?

Browns are as offensive as Redskins .... Why did the MLB St. Louis Browns become the Baltimore Orioles ?

The real reason is that the NFL does not like Dan Snyder .... they want him out . Same as they wanted Al Davis OUT ....

You do realize the Browns are named for Paul Brown......so please, how is that offensive?

And just in case you do not know who that is, here you go

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Brown

When the Browns moved to Baltimore, the city of Cleveland sued the NFL over the move, and as part of the settlement they made with the league, they were allowed to keep the name, records and tradition and the team would return to the league in 1999. The Ravens ended up becoming an expansion team but without having to build anything from the ground up like the Browns had to in 1999. So the Browns were on hiatus from 1996-1999, not an expansion team even though they had to go through an expansion draft and received additional draft picks in an attempt to build the team.

And you may want to put the Rams back in Cleveland since that was where they originally were founded......they moved out of Cleveland after the 1945 NFL season to Los Angeles. In 1946 the Browns were formed in the AAFC and the first coach was Paul Brown and the owner at the time left name of the team left it up to Brown, who rejected calls for it to be christened the Browns in his honor, but after a contest to pick the name, they ended up with Panthers to honor an old team that played in Cleveland in the 1920s, but because they were never any good, Paul Brown rejected the name so the owner gave in to popular demand and named the team Browns even with Paul Brown's objections.

The reason the St Louis Browns changed their name to Orioles when they moved to Baltimore the Miles-Krieger (Gunther Brewing Company)-Hoffberger group renamed their new team the Baltimore Orioles soon after taking control of the franchise. The name has a rich history in Baltimore, having been used by a National League team in the 1890s. In 1901, Baltimore and John McGraw were awarded an expansion franchise in the growing American League, naming the team the Orioles not because the name Browns, but because they wanted to distance themselves from the old St Louis team to connect with the fans in Baltimore had a connection with the Orioles name.

And the Kansas City Monarchs used to the Independent league Kansas City T-Bones, they changed the name because they made a partnership with the Negro League Museum which is in Kansas City and they all agreed to change the name to pay tribute to the Negro League and Monarchs, who have a rich tradition there. The city is far from against it, they actually are embracing it as a majority.

To Rudi and DJ_Jak_32: First of all, thank you both for your posts in reply to GeoWar. Secondly, people who use lots of unnecessary capital letters can usually be safely ignored...especially when they capitalize the word "they".

I read your post and all the side stories and comments go to the fact ....

The NFL does not like Dan Snyder . The NFL has a hot and cold relationship with Jerry Jones and several other owners. Usually those owners who do not go along with "group" think .

I find nothing wrong with the team name Redskins .
I find nothing wrong with the team name Browns .
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> name Chiefs
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> name Raiders
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> name Indians or Braves
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> name anything

It is about what the people with money in the franchise want to call it ... they made the investment ....
The Washington Football team plays at Fedex Stadium in Landover, Maryland -- what happens if Snyder moves the team to _______________ .

You're allowed to think whatever you want about names.
And yes, Synder does own the team. But sponsorships make the team profitable where he is able to earn on the team or at the very worst break even or have to spend very little.
Once the big money sponsors threatened to drop their payments to the Washington team, even a piece of **** like Synder realized that he could either change the name or face having to pay tens of millions out of his own pocket to run the team.
Or he could sell the team which his ego would not allow him to do. The next owners would simply have changed the name anyway.

So he chose to drop the name.

It really had nothing to do with the NFL at all. The team was at risk of losing 85% of its sponsorship revenue.
No more and no less.
They would have not even found an apparel company that would outfit the team.

And he could have moved the team to the Lunar surface and it would not have mattered. No company with any reputation would have touched them no matter where they moved.

I guess maybe they could be sponsored by those gold coin companies that rip off the elderly and whoever sponsors the Laura Ingram show?

But thank you for coming back to explain yourself, it does not make you any more correct. But at least I can understand what you were trying to get across
