How do some cards perform so badly?

Sure glad I used up my PP on this Babe Ruth card; currently in a Gold league. Has been a huge help thus far.

Babe Ruth cards have historically underperformed in the Perfect Team game series in every edition. It is very surprising, confusing and disappointing.

Any card with Avoid K under 80 is going to struggle at least a bit. Having that much power just makes it worse.

There are lots of reasons, but that performance is about right.

Basically, power and eye are strong at low levels and weaker at high levels. AvoidK is the opposite, strong at high levels and not as important at low levels.

Further Contact is actually a composite between POW, avoidK, and a hidden stat called BABIP. AvoidK gets better as you go up, BABIP stays the same in effectiveness, POW goes down. So if you have a CON stat driven mostly by POW, you'll really fall off as you see good pitching.

Thank you all for your input! I don't get deep into PT, and finally had a good amount of PP saved up to get a Willie Mays and Babe Ruth. Being those names and having a 100 rating, I assumed they would play well, maybe strike out at a higher rate in Ruth's case. Didn't expect to have this level of production though. Now I know better before spending on what seems like a good card.

Curious how you came to know this. Is there any documentation or threads in the forums about this that you recommend?

I think these types of tips benefit all as maybe we would start seeing a little more creative team building rather than teams having a lot of the same players.

The best summary document I know of (aside from the manual, which is fine but a little cryptic) is Sanji's PT Starter Guide. . This is more of a "how to make a really good team from nothing" guide than something about mechanics, but I think there are miscellaneous tips in there that speak to it (plus if you didn't know the fundamentals, it's useful).

One accessible database of player rankings is YourKidnies' PT21 Database. I think a lot of the statements about player quality in high level leagues (diamond I think is the main emphasis) are ultimately baked into the rankings. It's ultimately just one place to view player quality and it's missing some key things like dWAR/wSB/UBR projections, but as a starting point it's probably the best thing you can find without doing anything yourself. At minimum, it helps avoid these mistakes like buying some big name 100 OVR player and expecting that they'll do well.

The best community spot for PT roster advice is the #roster-and-strategy-advice channel on the OOTP discord, where people are way more active and way more likely to answer specific questions about how good some specific player as a whole might be, or whether your park factors are a good match for your team, stuff like that. I would definitely suggest joining the discord to any new players, since that's really where the knowledgeable and active segments of the PT community reside.

EDIT: Oh, and I came to know these things mostly because I do all my own modeling. But definitely interacting with the community helps a lot in terms of figuring out what the right assumptions are.

had 2 of these with different teams. Inconsistent and deeply underperforming doesn't begin to express my feelings about them.

It almost feels like a bait and switch. Superstar name, highest possible card rating....yet with all the ratings together it apparently has no chance for success at the higher levels.
