Game crashes seldomly - Out of memory - There's still a lot of memory available

My game crashes seldomly if I sim multiple seasons at a time or if I leave the game open for multiple hours then do other actions.

Oh. Just noticed there's a dedicated "Bug Reports Forum":
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...lay.php?f=3981

The thread should probably be moved there.

OOTP is a 32-bit application, so it does not matter how much memory is available; it can only use a certain amount before it goes belly up.

Are there ways to reduce the memory usage of the game?

I'm playing historical MLB in 1980 or 1993 and it happens once in a while.

I disabled:
- 3D features
- Facegen pictures
- Baseball cards
- Online features
- Anisotropic filter

Are there other options that are recommended to be adjusted to lower these issues?

There is no logical reason this game should be crashing with the amount of memory you have. Even most high end Triple A titles can run on 8GB of ram. I'd recommend looking up how to set your page file and how to do manual memory dumps.

This has happened to me when I was playing marathon sessions of 10+ hours. I would have to close the game and reopen it. It's a nuisance but not a big deal to do.

I don't know if this program will help. I have used it for old racing games like NR2003 and GTR2 which were written more than 10 years ago. It gives me much better FPS. I am running Windows 64 bit. It is very easy to use and it creates a backup file automatically.

It happened about every 15-20 minutes if I simmed multiple years in a "watcher" game or if I came back to the game after leaving it open for a few hours. I was testing how expansion teams behaved long-term before starting a new game with these settings.

I also adjusted these:
- Auto-save "Yearly" instead of "Monthly"
- Number of helper threads to "None"

I've not had crashes since doing the adjustments mentioned previously and these.

I don't do a lot of long-term sims but this is the only time I have experienced out-of-memory CTDs with OOTP. My theory is that OOTP doesn't waste time writing results to disk during sims in an effort to speed up sim times. It must wait until it is done simming and stores the data in RAM in the meantime. Limit long-term sims to 5-ish years at a time, depending upon the size of your universe and the level of stats detail you are keeping. That worked for me.

Edit to re-stated was said above in that 32bit applications can only utilize about 3GB of RAM, regardless of how much is available. I think we are getting 64 bit OOTP next year.

I believe the OP meant to use the word "suddenly" in the title of this post rather than "seldomly". I'm very pleased to read Markus's post about OOTP 22 being 64-bit for Windows. I might be wrong, but I seem to remember someone from the OOTP crew mention that 64-bit was a possibility for ootp22. Yay!
