working with entensions

So when players come to me their suggested offers are just so unrealistic.I'm playing in the year 1921 and in settings the average star quality salary is $660.So I just had a plater come to me and he was asking for $8300. He is 32 years old and his current salary is under $2000 and currently he is batting .410 and I know thats fantastic but how do you deal with these greedy players while trying to stay in budget while building a good team? The other factor is that he wanted a 7 tear extention which would make him 39 and chances are at the age of 38-39 he will not be performing like a star by the end of his contract...What are your thoughts on this?

Wait

First offer them something below what you think is reasonable. Their offer will usually come down. If it comes down a lot, keep negotiating. If it comes down a little. Then wait.

When they get to free agency, their demands usually come down.
If not, then find alternatives

I love when 32 year olds want a 7 year deal. I lower the number of years, and/or use a team option on final 2 years and get the number of years as low as possible when they are that age. Use the ask for response button when change offer and see how he reacts. A lot of times they agree to less years but will want ask me to increase the buyout.

I have also noticed the extension demands exceed what they demand via Free Agency, and usually far exceed what they actually get.
However, I have not had much success negotiating them down when it comes to extensions...if anything that extension number goes up over the course of the year and following my various offers...to the point where I've had players break off negotiations with me.
