Player names changed to Smith

Opened up my fictional league today to see that a lot of the player's last names in the game have been changed to Smith. Never saw anything like this before. I'm hoping there is a way to fix this since i have a 25 year history with this league.

Do you have any recent backups of your league, from before these changes took place? You could always load or restore a backup and continue from there.

As for why this may have occurred and how you can implement a fix, I did a quick search and found this older thread where the problem was resolved:

I was able to restore from back up then take the names.dat file from the back up and replace the names.dat file on my original saved game and that seems to have worked. So I didn't lose any in game time and the play names changed back. This is the second major problem i've had with this save file in the past week or so. If I lose this I may not play ootp for awhile haha.

Make sure to make a backup or two of your backup.

Use a cloud-based service such as Dropbox or Google Drive, and then maybe keep one more copy on an external drive.
