Number of Draft Rounds for 8-Team League with Reserve Lists
I'm running a fictional historical league set in 1901 with 8 teams and no minors. Teams have reserve lists with a limit of 15 players.
When I created the game, I believe OOTP recommended only 3 rounds for the draft. But I want to make sure the game creates enough rookies and that teams are able to draft enough players to replace retiring or declining players as well as allow proper development.
There are quite a few players who are well into their 30s in my league, and I suspect that many of them will soon be declining or retiring.
I'm familiar with the recommended number of rounds for leagues with minors, including the general rule of having 5 times as many draft rounds as the number of minor league levels. I've also found posts indicating that some people use 5-round drafts when running leagues with no minors.
But the 5-round recommendation appears to be for larger leagues with at least 16 teams. Since my league has only 8 teams, maybe the smaller number of rounds is okay. But I would appreciate any informed advice on this. I want to have the right number of draft rounds and rookies to keep a healthy balance and not end up with too much or too little talent in the future.
