Team Defensive Efficiency
So this has been a curiosity of mine for a while now and my curiosity is gnawing at me a lot so any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated.
![]() What stats/formula are used to get that stat? Are things like ZR, RNG, SB's included? I searched around FanGraphs but had no luck. What about PB's and WP's? What is considered average? I notice in my league (MLB expanded to 36 teams, using 85 for stats) that during the season Teams range anywhere from .680 to .730. So just above .700 being the avg. Would I be correct in assuming that? Or does it vary depending on era, league settings, etc? Appreciate any feedback Cheers Last edited by Bluenoser; 11-17-2020 at 09:08 AM. |

The formula for Defensive Efficiency Ratio is: 1 - ((H + ROE - HR) / (PA - BB - SO - HBP - HR)).

It's sort of a team BABIP, including errors. So basically (H-HR+E)/(AB-K), give or take.
So given that team BABIP has generally been around .300, then yeah, .700 being the average makes sense. |

It is, as the above posts allude to, the percentage of balls in play that are turned into outs.
