Can you choose the team you want to manage?

I am new to OOTP and new to computer-based sim game. (I did Stat-O-Matic board game many years ago!). I am reading through the manual before starting a game.

I am reading about creating a Human Manager for any OOTP game. And it said you have to be hired by teams looking for a manager. I assume this is relative to whatever league you are entering. (I am not going to play online to start). I was hoping I could choose the team I wanted to manage. Can you do this?

A separate question- if I just want to try out playing one practice game (not season as a game seems to refer to for OOTP- but just try playing Giants vs. Dodgers in one game before I initiate a season...can you do that?

Thanks for helping me get started.

Yes. Absolutely

There's like a career mode for managers/front office you can play. But, you don't have to and I'd imagine most people dont.

Yes
You can play an exhibition game (or as many as you want)

Thanks. I didn’t see the option for exhibition game. Could you point me in the right direction? Maybe when I get started I will see I can select team to manage that I want. It wasn’t clear in the manual.

You have to have a started game (or league/universe so OOTP knows from which teams you can select to play your exhibition.). Then, there's an option for an exhibition game.

I think it's down at the bottom of the play menu.

And, yes, when you start a league, you'll have the option to pick the team you want to manage and/or GM
