Explain the logic of this Extension
When I try to negotiate an extension, he asked for 24mil over 8 years. That's crazy! Why does Gausman think he deserves this much? I think he deserves 14-15mil/yr at the most. What do you guys think?

Usually the first offer by the player is their dream number. You can always go lower and shorter years by 20-25% and they will agree. At that age, I wouldn't offer more than 4 years with a vesting 5th year based on 30 starts. I'd offer $15mil, $18mil, $21mil and $24mil during the first 4 years and then a big vesting year of $30mil. That way you can control whether you want that 5th year by limiting his starts if he's fallen off.

Thanks for the advice. I tried your suggestion and he want 23mil still, 4 years. I still think that is ludicrous.

I'd suggest you read that as "I really plan to be a free agent."

Well I got him for four years, 18/21/24/24mil, with a final year player opt out. I still think I am overpaying, but it’s better value than what I could get with FA SPs this off-season.

The more you play, the more you will understand how the software works in regards to contract extensions. They usually ask for more during the season if you try to extend. If you wait it out, you could have made the $15mil qualifying offer which scares some teams away and usually lowers the asking price and then you can come back to him about 2 weeks into free agency and get a lower deal.

He's having a career year and that's thanks to the low hr rates. He's demanding a lot but he's not worth anything.

My strategy with extensions is always to offer team options the last two seasons if I can. I’m okay with paying a bit of the money as well. My logic is that with team options it’s my choice if I want to keep the player on my roster. And it’s usually more cost effective in my opinion, spending $3M as opposed to hoping a player opts-out and possibly have to pay $25+M

Well he just had a 7.5 WAR year, thus so far he’s paying dividends.

Yeah, it feels like the AI logic worked exactly as expected here. Well done, OOTP.

He's won the 2021 NL Cy Young. It's a win-win contract so far.
