Alternate NHL History

Hey all, I briefly posted the Canadian Hockey League report but I'm back with a new project. Inspired by Dkitson16's Chose your own adventure series and other reports throughout many forums. I'll be trying out various formats to try to find one that works for me.

The goal of this series is to follow the expansion of the NHL, expansion teams and relocations will be decided by me. I will be using a custom league to get fictional players as I hope it'll bring more of a connection to the league rather than for example always having Gretzky lead in points and such.

This isn't supposed to be 100% alike to history, I will be doing things differently so if I ignore a major historical event that's why.

First updates will be coming soon, I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time so I'm excited!

1917-1918 Season:

After the livingstone dispute, the NHA was disbanded and under the leadership of William Sandison a new league was formed named the ‘National Hockey League’.

The first season consists of four teams:

The Toronto Arenas, a team currently owned by the Toronto Arena Company. Unfortunately for the Arenas they are still facing a lawsuit from Livingstone which may put strain on the brand new franchise. They will play in the 7,500 Mutual Street Arena.

The Ottawa Senators, an old team with a long history owned by Izaak Walton Killam (1885-1955). They will play in the 10,000 seat Ottawa Auditorium.

The Montreal Canadiens, the francophone team of Montreal owned by Vincent Dalairs. They will play in the 4300 seat Westmount Arena.

And finally, the Montreal Wanderers, a majority anglophone club owned by Canadian Financier and industrialist James Hamett Dunn (1874-1956). They will play in the 4,300 seat Westmount Arena.

1917-18 Season preview:

The Canadiens play far below their expectation, especially with star goalie Zack Boutin (6-9-3). Wanderers star Garrett Frederick leads the league in points with 51 in the inaugural season.

The Wanderer Goalie Louis-Philippe Lavinge was on pace for an incredible year, unfortunately injuries took the worst on him and he missed out hurting their overall standing.

(apologies for this the stats messed up while i was messing around with it, i'll try to make sure this doesn't happen again.)

The Westmount Arena burns down, with this the Montreal Wanderers have announced their plan to temporarily play at Quebec City in the 6,000 seat Quebec Arena for the upcoming season.

Due to the change, the Canadiens have announced their plan to play in the 3,000 seat Julibee Arena.

1919 Offseason

Due to Financial troubles and no home arena, the Montreal Wanderers were bought by Mathieu Côté (1878-1966), a Quebecois financier and owner of a popular beer brand in Quebec. He has renamed the team into the Quebec Voyageurs, with a new logo.

In other news, the Toronto Arenas have folded due to the ongoing lawsuit between Livingstone and the team plus poor team performance and poor financing. This leaves one of the biggest cities in Canada without a team, NHL Commissioner William Sandison has stated he will look for a potential team to fill the gap in the coming seasons.

The Candadiens announce their move to the brand new 10,000 seated Mount Royal Arena.

In the search for a new team to fill the gap that the Arenas left, the Toronto Marlborough Athletic Club, more commonly known as the Toronto Marlboros have joined the league. They will be playing in the 4,500 seat Ravina Gardens for their inaugural season rather than Mutual Street Arena.

In addition, the Hamilton Tigers have joined the league. They will be playing in the 4,500 seated Hamilton Forum.

To Compensate for this change, the league will be playing 32 games next season with three teams making the playoffs. The top team will have a first round bye while the 2nd and 3rd placed team will play each other in a one game series before meeting the first seeded team.

1919-20 Season

The season was an unexpected surprise for the Montreal Canadiens who for the past few years had no luck within the league, many believe this turnaround is due to a star duo tandem in Zack Boutin and newcomer Patrick Morel.

Montreal also had three players reach the top five in points leading the league, will they be able to go all the way?

Picture of Patrick Morel, upcoming star for the Montreal Canadiens.

In addition, Ottawa forward Nate Beirnes set a new league record with 59 points in the regular season. This is most likely due to the addition of games to the regular season, will he be able to push his team to a Stanley Cup?

Alongside Beirnes is D.J. Holden, a young netminder for the Ottawa Senators, he has been playing well in the past season and this season he set a league record for Goals Against Average, averaging under 3.00 goals a game! A very impressive feat for the era he is playing in.

1921-1922 Season

The Quebec Voyageurs stay on top of the league once more with the best record in league history. Whereas the Toronto Marlboros finish with the worst record so far, a huge blow for a team with so much potential.

Toronto and Quebec struggle with attendance averaging around 4,000 attendees in a 7,500 and 6,000 capacity size for both.

Beirnes stays the league leader in points for two seasons in a row, he has also become all time leader in points, though not many seasons have passed yet.

Nathan Beirnes

Montreal Forward Josh Schwartz sets a league record with 33 goals in a season.

D.J. Holden keeps a close hold on leading goalies but Nicolas Lepage takes the record for Goals Against Average with 2.87, a very impressive mark passing Holden's 2.97 GAA.

1923-24 NHL season
Though the Voyageurs had huge successes these past seasons, they have been unprofitable and have 3,296 out of 6,000 seats filled on average. If this does not change does this show the end of a dynastic city?

In general, scoring has gone down compared to past years, top players in the last few years are getting older but they're still producing. To this, goalies have generally been seeing better statistics due to the downturn in scoring.
