"Narrow" playoff miss

I had to laugh at this one. One of the absolute worst teams in my league (very much in rebuilding mode) was just mathematically eliminated from the playoffs with a 33-83 record, 116 games into a 150 game season. The message posted about it?

Anchorage's Fans Crushed After Crabs Narrowly Miss Playoffs:

After the Anchorage Crabs were mathematically pushed out of a playoff spot today, angry fans of the team bashed the team on social media.

"The team's GM put together all of the pieces needed and we had a great team but management simply blew it," said one local.

"The Anchorage Crabs said they would turn the franchise around - I guess they meant 360 degrees," wrote one fan.

"Anchorage needs to go back to school and study their chemistry - they obviously don't have any," blasted another fan.

The Anchorage Crabs, are expected to again have a very competitive squad in next year's Western Division playoff race.

The writer's definition of "narrowly miss" and "very competitive squad" must be slightly different from mine.

There's actually a simple fix for this. Don't announce any team has missed the playoffs unless it happens during the last 10 days of the season.
