Bit of a rocky start... first inning of the first game had 3 consecutive home runs from Posey, Ruth, and Bagwell, but then proceeded to lose the first two games as last season's pitcher of the year Maddux gave up 5 and didn't get out of the 6th inning (followed by Gibson giving up 4 in 1 inning of work), and then Johnson gave up 6 and didn't get out of the 3rd. And the games were against a team primarily made up of live mission rewards.

Anyway, I've got Cigar City in my division, so this should be... interesting.

0-5 start for Paragon City, last in the league in runs scored. It's going to be a long week

The Colonels start season 2 of the great Contact/Range team-building experiment. I learned a few things in season 1.
  • If your team strikes out a lot, high BABIP doesn't help you as much. So AvK is very important with this type of team.
  • If your pitchers give up too many HRs, great range in the field doesn't help you as much. So high MOV is still important even if your park supresses HRs because...
  • Your home park configuration does not help you while playing on the road.
So I have two goals moving forward: (1) upgrade my starting pitching (besides SE Maddux) and (2) upgrade some key batters to get better AvK without sacrificing CON or BABIP.

I did alter my park slightly from .900 to .950 for HRs and from 1.50 to 1.25 for XBHs. I mostly did that just to experiment and not because I thought it would help me a great deal.

I pulled 96 Jason Schmidt from a pack, so he goes into my rotation but I don't expect more from him than any other 25K pitcher. It appears to take 75-100K to acquire the type of pitcher that I need.

Some real positives from last season include the performance of Ray Chapman at second base. Chapman had 40 SBs with only 3 CS and won a gold glove. He did not achieve a plus-OPS though, so he might not be the long term solution there. But I have bigger problems to solve first.

I was really happy with 81 Tony Gwynn in right field. He had 2.3 WAR in 91 games and did everything well (.809 OPS, 20 SBs, positive ZR). I got a very similar performance from 90 Cleon Jones in left field, so my cheap outfield is relatively set with SE Ichiro in center and 90 Willie McGee as the fourth outfielder.

My platoon catcher tandem of Berra and Howard put up 5 WAR between them, so that position is the least of my problems.

Bagwell and Seymour were worth 3 WAR each at 1B and DH, but I could certainly do better at those two key positions as well as the infielders. But at what cost? Again, it probably takes 75-100K each.

So my question is key position player or starting pitcher first? I will upgrade both eventually so I guess it depends upon the opportunities that I find on the AH this week. I need bargains because my personal fetish for pristine cards might require me to throw a used one back on the AH and I can't afford to lose 10% on a big card. Shortstop or second base (moving Chapman back to SS) might be the best place to start if the price is right.

At what cost?

I spent 1.3 million on 13 players, two, McCarver and Buffinton, from packs and the rest (11) are live mission reward cards. The result is a .500 team at diamond level. To be fair, I only had Roger Connor for 44 games last week and Tommy Bond and SE Cap Anson are brand new this week. The Magpies can score, for sure, but the pitching is still dreadful. The failure to hang on to an 11 game lead last week wears on my already faltering enthusiasm for the game.

Live mission reward cards are not enough, any more, to reach diamond. Dum Dum Bengals repeat gold after 79-83 last week. While Hamtramck gets relegated back to gold.

Came home to find out that the Dawgs have started out 11-2 in their first time in Diamond

This can't be right lol......waiting for the fall......but enjoying while I can.

The 2 sore spots I have despite the record is Dave Parker and David Ortiz. Thought a platoon with Evans and Bags would make sense......086 and .212

I'll leave Papi in there for a few more games because he had Parker hitting behind him so he probably wasn't seeing too many good pitches. Move Ichiro back to right and put Yaz in LF to bat behind Papi.

Anything I do in this first year in Diamond will be gravy as to be honest, I expect to cross train a LOT of players in different positions. But as long as they keep winning I don't want to upset the apple cart. Hope the players aren't pissed I benched Parker

I want to shake up my infield a little as well but I have some leeway. Pesky at SS and Cano at 3B. I can either go find me a Diamond 3B and keep Pesky at SS or get a stud SS (100 Honus?) and slide Pesky to 3B (trained to 113 there)

hmmmmm

You think you have problems? Log on to your Bengals and take a gander at the other conference. There you will find the 5-13 Colonels floundering at the bottom of their division in GOLD, not diamond. The losses include two one-run defeats at the hands of your Bengals.

All kidding about overpowered Live cards aside, it is really frustrating to be unable to compete at gold level (or presumably below) without filling your squad with the same 26 players as every other team. Granted, I didn't spend 1.3 million points on my team... more like 150,000 points. So I get what I paid for but it would still be nice to field a competitive team without the cookie cutter lineup.

To add insult to injury, I was finally able to make a big upgrade only to find that it was a used card - so back on the market it goes. Why can't we have a switch to clear the card's history? Is there some reason why the developers think it is mandatory for the card to retain some other player's history when we can't even access the details of past seasons for our own team?

I think it's time to dump live Scherzer and Cole from the Critters. That's 40k points that can be put towards one or two actually working historical diamond starters that will be much better than those two. Who needs perfect cards? I need guys that can get somebody the **** out.

Thing is I picked out most of the live mission SE SP rewards that look useful already. Carlton and Mussina look interesting, but I'm at 1/5 for either division. Mussina is dirt cheap on the market. Wonder where that comes from... Oh well, for 6k and change I can find out for myself.

Ah what the ****. (throws both Scherzer and Cole on the market) All live cards must go!! And there is another *nine* on the roster. Plugging the empty rotation spot with 1959 Camilo Pascual for now. If nothing else, he's good for a mission.

What a difference a day makes. A 5-20 April certainly sobers you up in a hurry. All those things that I said I learned? Well, apparently I didn't really learn anything. Obviously, people are successful with a contact/defense approach and a park tailored to it, but that formula sure hasn't worked for me. I am last in runs scored so the offense is putrid. I am in the bottom third in runs allowed so range is not preventing runs. I am lousy at home, lousier on the road, and I would probably be lousy on the moon if we had games there.

The SE live mission cards were just as good as the cards that I sprinkled with secret contact sauce to replace them. It's going to be a long week as I try to figure out what to do with this mess besides just going back to the cookie-cutter team and putting the whole thing on auto-pilot. I really enjoy playing this game, but there is nothing to do if there is no path to upgrade. I love to tinker, so I will enjoy that for a few days.

This post is not a whine or a cry for help. It is really just me thinking out loud. I have found that it is better to tell you these things than my wife. At least some of you will not think I am crazy.

Sometimes you have no control over it and the game engine is just going to do it's thing it seems. I've had seasons like that. Same lineup, same park factors......lose about 40 games more?????

When I left home this morning the Dawgs are 18-8. They got swept by a crap team that had only won 3 games so far and then proceeded to take 2 of 3 from the top team in the league

I wouldn't be surprised to go home today and see that they are 10 games below .500

In other news, the Dawgs announced for the first time since he has been on the team, Buff Bagwell has been benched with the recent signing of Hank Greenberg

This game can be insanely frustrating at times. You make moves to "improve" your team from the SE Live Mission cards for supposedly "better" cards -- and it bites you in the rear. I'm in Gold and down to only 8 of the SE Live Mission cards on my roster.

I've upgraded three of my SPs, using only SE Maddux and Carlton from the live missions now, added three other PEAK starters to replace them -- a 100K card, a 60K card and a 40K card with ratings of 100, 97 and 99. The 99 is now in my bullpen because he was atrocious at the end of last season and even worse so far this season. The 100 has been mostly good, but after a good start this season has come crashing to earth, the 97 has been erratic over two seasons now. I replaced the 99 that I put in the bullpen with a 97 who after one start is pitching to an ERA of 31.50.

As far as the lineup goes, I've made some significant upgrades there as well, adding a Perfect 2B through my best pack pull, a 99 RF and a 96 OF who can play all three positions, a 100 CF, improved defense at SS and 3B and added a 1B to platoon with Bagwell or DH. Right now I'm sitting at .500 after getting swept by a team of SE Live mission cards and Live cards.

My SPs are 12th in ERA, bullpen is 4th.

BA is 9th, Hits 9th, Extra Base Hits 11th

Defense is doing well 5th in Efficiency, 3rd in ZR.

I'm about ready to give up on PT. Even if I somehow get this bunch of losers out of Gold and up to Diamond, it's just going to be a bloodbath. Forget about ever getting to Perfect, I'm not putting that kind of money into the game. I've seen lineups in Gold (either on their way up or coming back from Diamond) that have 100s at every position -- cards that go for 300K to 1M at every position, right down to the mop-up guys in the bullpen, that are all at least 100-200K. You either have to have the luckiest pulls in the world or be sinking a lot of money into the game. I spam the hell out of the tournaments to win packs, but it usually only results in maybe 4-8 packs a day at most.

/Rant

PT is a difficult game. The fact that what you have done in the game so far has failed is not a fault of the game.

I figured based on my knowledge of the game that I would need 3 million points by October to be competitive and I had a plan in place to acquire those points without buying them. I should easily achieve that goal by October if I keep grinding tournaments and the AH, but my perseverance is weakening. I haven't even played that well, either. Like you, I've wasted points on upgrades that didn't work out.

My model for success in PT21 was my own Hamtramck Tigers team in PT20. That $100 team didn't even establish itself permanently in perfect level until 40 weeks had gone by and now routinely wins 110+ each week and has 7 championships. Of course, in PT21 it's diamond level where success is expected as I'm not good enough at AH grinding to get the 6 or 7 million needed (although I know a few F2P teams that already have close to that much).

Thanks, Bailey.

It really was a rant. I'm not ready to give up. Sometimes when you get into one of those streaks where you lose seven in a row or nine out of ten, especially early in the season, you start questioning everything you're doing. And honestly, the game wouldn't be much fun if you upgraded your team and slaughtered the Live Mission/Live Card teams 100% of the time. There's still good players and cards on those teams that should have a fighters chance to win a division or a Championship. I think we've all just come to realize that nobody is going to Perfect with 20 SE Live Mission cards on their squad, so we're all scrambling at Bronze/Silver/Gold to figure out where we can improve and hopefully prepare ourselves in advance for Diamond.

And you're right -- it's not an easy game. And I hope that the way that it's been developed that there's not just ONE correct path to the ultimate goal of making it to Perfect.

On the bright side, my FTP Mets Theme team is doing really well in their first season and allowing me to make some upgrades to better Mets players. I only wish there were some better Mets options. I'd love to see a Beltran PEAK card with the Mets, or some more interesting Snapshot cards of single seasons, but there's still some nice upgrades available for my Mets squad that I will need to squirrel my PP away for.

Paragon City Heroes started the season with a 10 game losing streak, finishing the first month 7-21. After a restructuring I brought in 98 Boudreau and 95 Eddie Collins to play middle infield, and Willie Keeler and Carl Furillo returned from the reserve roster to play corner OF, we have managed a 12-12 May and are currently on a 4 game win streak and just one game from pulling out of the relegation zone. trying to sell a few things so that i cna complete a collection that should have a big effect on the team.

Meanwhile Lowdown Lugnuts with a team worth of around 300k are 30-24 sitting atop their division, somehow we are 14th in FIP but 4th in runs against, Dave Magadan is hitting more like Sisler than Sisler is and Tom Seaver has been incredibly unlucky to be 4-4 despite easily being the best pitcher in the rotation. the only categories we excel in are defence

I paid 153K for two pitchers to complete the 1800's collection that brought Cap Anson to Collingwood. Tommy Bond was one of them, and he's been great so far. In fact, the whole pitching staff has been great, so far. The Magpies are in first by one half game-- a lead that will probably hold up in the way last week's 11 game lead could not.

Completed the Walter Johnson TOTD on Paragon City Heroes, so added a few bullpen pitchers (Wood, Walsh), a new backup C (Meyers) and a utility OF/DH (Sherry Magee). Hopefully Walter can win some games

After yesterday's rant, I shuffled my roster a bit to increase the power output by benching Tony Gwynn (81) in favor of SE Billy Williams at DH (Seymour moved from DH to RF) and platooning SE Duke Snider with Cleon Jones in LF. I re-arranged the deck chairs on my Titanic bullpen, mainly moving Nathan into the closer role and assigning setup chores to Lyons and Plank. Finally, I changed my strategies from the Whiteyball style back to my typical set, which could probably be best described as sabermetric, using individual player strategies to take advantage of the speed that I still have (Suzuki, Chapman, Turner, and Seymour to an extent).

The result was a 17-10 May and a more relaxed Orcin. My run differential was -34 in April and +10 in May. We hit 17 HRs in April and 33 in May. Keep in mind that I did not change my HR-suppression park, so the lineup change had something to do with this offensive uptick. I do accept that a good chunk of the improvement was luck, competition, and regression to the mean, but so far I am happier with this more balanced approach nonetheless.
