Favourite Tournament Level
Wondering what everyones favourite tournament level to play is? I have put together a bronze team that does okay, not great, but okay. Feels a little random, some days I can get 10-12 packs, the next day, trouble to get out of the second round. Wondering what everyone else like to play.

Bronze, and I agree on the hot and cold days with it.

I’ve been playing Bronze mostly, but not been too successful. I get kinda annoyed that so many teams are just copy-catting each other with rosters, but I guess it works. Just seems less exciting than trying to figure out the best roster on your own.

Doesn't look like many play gold....I've been sitting on a boatload of golds that will never be in my lineup or rotation...better off to sell?

Cap tourneys are great. IMO it's the most interesting format, with a lot of viable builds existing out there as opposed to the rarity formats where there's an optimal roster and everyone not running it or something close to it is probably just worse off.

Iron is my go to, but there are not enough tournaments for three teams. So I hit Bronze, Silver, and even gold. I thought one of my bronze teams was a pretty good line up, but I don't think they've ever won anything. 99% of my wins are in iron.

I love bronze. There's enough variety that it's not the same 26 guys over and over (although there are 3 or 4 cards that are in very heavy use). I have had a blast pouring over data to see what works and what doesn't. I have managed to get an offense together that is super productive, but the pitchers are freaking voodoo.
It's like putting together a jigsaw puzzle with all the pieces facing down. But when it does manage to work, it's a great feeling. The same team that can't get out of round 1 for a dozen straight then goes out and cashes 5 in a row. My wife says I would be more successful herding cats rather than trying to outwit the RNG. She's probably right, but why would I want all those cats herded together?

will do! I have a decent gold team because I refuse to sell off any rewards cards. I dig the Gold tourneys.

So far I've only been doing iron... but that's simply because I figure that as a new player, I don't have a realistic chance of getting the cards I need for the higher levels if I can't compete in the lower levels. The rosters are relatively easy to figure out at the first-pass level, since there's a lot of consensus players at many positions... but I'm pretty sure I still need to fine-tune my strategy settings. I also want to set up some kind of system for aggregating stats across multiple tournaments and teams so that I can get a proper sample size looking at which players really perform in the context of the most common opponents.
Watching at least the highlights of games, I definitely notice things that need adjusting that I wouldn't spot from the line score or even in some cases the play-by-play. One series I was constantly throwing out guys on the bases... and in the first (and so far only) tournament championship I've won, take a look at the difference in the fatigue levels between my team (on the left) and my opponent (on the right). (I don't know how much fatigue matters, but it can't help.)

I really liked something Orcin said about not having the patience to see what works.
Everyone playing tourneys, by and large, has very good teams. There are a lot of wiggle points, but if you wiggle on the soft side more than a couple times, you won't win very often, though, you won't win very often even if you are spot-on with the best lineup, depending on level and day of the week. While the metas are strong because - in part - i think it's hard to fully trust your instincts and insights when wins are hard to come by even for the best teams - there are ways of play, but I'm not sure (for those not culling stats) how much patience one has to test out the balancing act of going for a power hitting team that hits enough not get limited to solo shots. The game's a very interesting balancing act, but I think they erred in not making tourney stats available in some easier way to PT players so they could experiment more freely. I'd love to try a more extreme power lineup, but I don't have the patience for something that's an even longer random walk down RNG lane. Stats would help immensely so I don't spend a month fruitlessly pursuing that. The fear of this tends, I think, to keep people a little closer to the metas as well. |
