Strangeverse 2076+

StrangeVerse
I’d been wanting to pick this one back up for a while (I ran this thing on the Fictional Simulations board for a good stretch) – since purchasing OOTP 21, actually – but, as is its wont, life got in the way. And then disaster struck – followed by mourning and the creation of other universes to play… Long story short – when I converted StrangeVerse from 20 to 21, in the middle of my 2080 Season where I was at the helm of my beloved Miami United, the first thing I did was to create a backup of the league. Checked the ‘responsible OOTP player’ box like a champ. The next thing I did was save the universe (I don’t know why; I am aware that it was redundant) during which my computer began laboring, the game went into ‘(not responding)’ mode, and, like a dork, I got impatient and force closed the game. No worries, I thought, I have the backup… well, turns out I was wrong – when I went to pull up the save in OOTP21 it wasn’t in the list (gasp!) and when I checked the save folder, I noticed that the only ‘.dat’ that was in the folder was ‘storylines.dat’… I’d ruined Christmas… forever.

So, as my mom always says, “When life gives you lemons, juggle them”, and that’s what I did.

Basically, I’m picking it up here-ish in 2076 for the tricentennial season… reliving some of my favorite players' glory days, reinstalling myself as the GM of the Los Angeles Leopards (more on that later), and making a run at immortality.

Some Notes:
  1. I took the opportunity to rebrand the league… something I’ve wanted to do for a while but just couldn’t be bothered to make it happen. 99% of the concepts used are from the hallowed ‘OOTP Mods - Logos, Graphics, and HTML’ boards using work created by low, txranger, nielsoncp, pwal, and others I’m sure… a special h/t to those fellas for doing such fine work for the community.
  2. My team is stacked – we have the most money, a lot of the best players, and a top-flight development system… we are the team you love to hate. That big city ballclub with a crackerjack pitching staff and a lineup that can crack. We’re picked to finish with the best record in the league, which I will most certainly mess up.
  3. I use settings from the *** for my statistical output that I manually typed into the league a while back. I got them after playing a season of *** ball where I imported Kruk onto the Nippon Ham Fighters… it was one of those ideas you never do anything with – “Kruk-Zilla: John Kruk’s season in Japan”. His team missed the playoffs, but he finished second in HRs.
  4. The League setup is a 2SL-2D-6T config with way too many teams qualifying for the playoffs (50%) that goes 162 games with Interleague turned on. The base I used for the league is a modded ‘Fictional Filled V6.quick’ that stealofhome created – it is, for my money, the penultimate set-up – huge college feeder, an independent league, and all the MLB/MiLB teams a boy could want. A great base to start from for sure.
  5. The plan here is to just get things going and explain things as I go – so, I’m not going to do a big thing on the players by positions or any of that.

A Bit of League History:
  • The Montreal Alouettes and St. Louis Blue Birds have won the most titles since 1992 (which is the last time I reset the history of the league – can’t remember why I did that) at 7 each. Seattle, Portland, and Buffalo are nipping on their heels at 6 each, respectively.
  • We’ve only had two perfect games thrown since 1992 – the first happened during that season and the last one occurred in 2039.
  • We haven’t had any major milestones reached since 2067 when SP Josiah Weber and SP Logan Lightner both eclipsed 3000 K’s. Maybe the Tricentennial Campaign will be the year!

2076 Season (3/30 – 4/2)

3/30 – 4/2: Los Angeles Leopards (0-0, .000, 1st NL West) @ San Jose Seals (0-0, .000, 1st NL West)
We’ll kick off the tricentennial campaign on the road, in fact, our first 10 games will be in cities not as nice as our own, against a club that is like a mirror image of our own if that mirror was a distorting mirror from the funhouse of our youth. Every good attribute we have as a team is reflected back with something decidedly more awkward and grotesque… San Jose is, along with Austin, the worst club in our division and will be, before this thing is all said and done, in the running for worst club in the league. Basically – we should, if predictive models can be trusted (they can’t), sweep these guys before heading to Philadelphia for our second series of the season. Their only players of note are a couple of relievers and their closer… beyond that, the cupboards are barren – devoid of anything with a nutritional value above ZERO. They are, in effect, a pantry full of Unfrosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts (the worst kind, the kind that should not exist) and shrimp flavored ramen… sure, you’d eat it if you had to, but you wouldn’t like it. Not one bit.

1 of 162: Cole Guzman (0-0, 0.00) @ Bentley Hunt (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 8-1
. San Jose opted to go with BYU-alum Bentley Hunt on the bump as their opening day Ace… we liked that. Zippo Hollins hit 2 jacks and brought 5 in, Guzman gave us 6 strong allowing 5 hits and 0 runners to plate, and we turned 2 double plays… with Pepper starting one that went around the diamond. 3 steals for the club too – 2x for Ethan and 1 for our resident superstar Otto Isaac. Otto, it should be noted, won the AL Boyce Rigg (MVP) in 2075… he is one of the top 2 or 3 players in the Majors right now.

2 of 162: Michael Brisk (0-0, 0.00) @ Brody John (0-0, 0.00)
Loss, 5-1
. Brisky is a Los Angeles legend – a real man about town who flexes his burly ‘stache on the catwalk that is La La Land – but, he didn’t play like it today… 4 earned, 3 HRA (all solo shots) in 7 innings of work. Ouch. We could only muster up 5 hits as a club, Otto got caught with his hand in the honeypot, and Ethan committed an uncharacteristic fielding flub. Unless that’s going to be a new thing with him… jury is still out on that one, I guess. Brody John, a Stanford alum, gave us the business – 8 innings, 1 earned, and 7 Ks on the day for the 27-year old hurler.

Name: Noah Boonpa.png
Views: 1004
Size: 27.3 KB
Elsewhere: LF Noah Boonpa (Denver Miners) went 5 for 5 with a 3 run homer, 4 RBI, and 3 runs in a 10-9 loss against the Salt Lake Alpines… he was a one-man wrecking crew out there who just ran out of time, would’ve been nice if more of his teammates decided to contribute. SP Robby Garrett (Pittsburgh Pipers) threw a complete game, 2-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over the New Orleans Gators… his last 3-hitter or better came in 2074 when he did it against the New Jersey Generals.

3 of 162: Merl Crawford (0-0, 0.00) @ Prior Balazs (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 3-2
. Back on the good foot… 1B Archie Imanov, who hit a near-career high 26 jacks last season (his best is 27 in 2074), put two out of the park today to contribute to the cause and our Starter, Merlin “You’re Gonna Do What?” Crawford went 7.2 innings with 1 earned and a few Ks. 3B Pepper Grant, one of my all-time faves, went hitless for the 3rd game in a row – your boy couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Elsewhere: SS Shaughan Hayes (Denver Miners) went 3 for 3 with 3 HRs, 4 RBI, 3 runs, and a free pass in a 5-2 win over the Salt Lake Alpines… yikes. Denver is styling on Salt Lake offensively to open up the 2076 campaign – too bad they didn’t win that first one though. LF Montana Dudect, a Junior playing for Tulane, has a 37-game hitting streak going in NCAA play. The longest hitting streak of all-time in the NCAA (58) was set in 2026 by Aiden Knowles who did it as a member of the Miami Hurricanes. Aiden spent most of his career in the minors, playing only one MLB season in Seattle before stints in the Bush League playing for the Nolanville Astronauts and Decatur Donnybrooks.

4 of 162: Julen Morales (0-0, 0.00) @ Patrick Zielinski (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 8-3.
Julen spins a low-key masterpiece in a complete-game, 5-hitter where he allowed 3 earned and fanned 6. LF Andy Shepard hit a 3-run bomb, Pepper still hasn’t hit the ball (SAC FLY today though), and, despite striking out 8 times as a club, we managed to start the season off with a 3-1 series win over the hapless Seals.

This played out about how’d you’d expect – we dominated, mostly, and came away with a relatively easy series win to kick off the 2076 season. Brisky was disappointing, sure, but sometimes all that glitters isn’t gold and if there is any truth to the rumors swirling around the clubhouse that he was out pretty late at the World Famous Pink Poodle the night before his start - it’s normal. Otto and Pepper haven’t exactly come out of the gates hot – we’ll need both to pick things up a bit as we navigate through this long slog of a season and I have no doubt they will – we won’t be calling in a performance psychologist or hypnotist just yet.. and our pitching, outside of Brisky, held up quite nicely – we’ll trot our #5 out in the first game against Philly before turning the page back to the top of the rotation… For our part, we got a long cross-country flight ahead of us followed by three days of playing in front of the worst fans in baseball… if not for the cheesesteaks, I’m not sure what Philly would have to offer for a representative of an out of town sports team besides a bruised ego and the occasional broken rib. Elsewhere: SS Ray Gerhold, of the Las Vegas Outlaws, went 1 for 1 with a HR, 3 runs, and 4 walks in an 8-3 win over the Mexico City Jaguars. In Mexico City.

2076 Season (4/3 – 4/5)

4/3 – 4/5: Los Angeles Leopards (3-1, .750, 1st NL West) @ Philadelphia Patriots (2-1, .667, 3rd in NL East)
Outside of a few women I dated in college - one of which that was really just a three-day dalliance - I can't think of any other group of people who hate me as much as the fans of the Philadelphia Patriots. The difference, and this is important, lies in what fuels that hatred - I.E. the former have every right while the latter base their vitriol solely on the team I represent. Fair play, I guess - as if I have a choice... the things they say about my mother though? Borderline criminal. You almost have to give these miscreants a pass though - they don't have a lot to cheer for outside of LF Palmer Parker and SP Josiah Weber (who we should not see in this set), so all they really have left is to look for things to cheer against. And, the representative from California would seem to do quite nicely based on the creativity and veracity of their insults... It's just a non-stop avalanche of filthy sweet nothings yelled into my ear at a volume that can only be described as head-splitting. But I digress... Let's look at what we're dealing with here, shall we? Philly is 2-1 after taking the season-opening set off Brooklyn and looks to be every bit the prototypical Philadelphia based ballclub... malcontented, cocksure, and blessed with the type of misplaced confidence that often fuels the overachiever. Listen, on paper, this isn't a good ballclub, but, in life, they ain't no walk in the park either. We’ll have our work cut out for us here - if we get contributions from Otto and Pepper to go along with the rest we should come out smelling roses, if not... It's all cheesesteak induced onion breath and a kick in the pants on our way out the door.

5 of 162: Valhalo Contreras (0-0, 0.00) @ Vin Uhlman (0-0, 0.00)
Loss, 3-2
. Valhalo gave us nothing special – 6.1 innings, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, and 2 Ks, Otto put his first ball out of the park, and Pepper finally got a hit… but, it was all for naught as the Philadelphia Pats walked us off on the bottom of the 10th on a LF Palmer Parker run-scoring single. 3B Mick Udelhoven did most of the work for Philly going 3 for 4 with a two-bagger and a jack.

6 of 162: Cole Guzman (1-0, 0.00) @ Nolan Wilkins (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 4-1
. Guzman got himself into a bit of a groove in this one giving us 8 hard-scrabble innings of work where he surrendered only 5 hits and a run while fanning 7 batsmen. RF Ethan Mullens put his first ball out of the park, a 3-run shot, Hollins scored, and Cl Jacques Jameson picked up his 2nd save of the year. Mullens swiped his 4th bag and Sparacino, Zippo, and Archie hooked up for two DPs. A good all-around effort from the club to earn the opportunity to take the series with a rubber match win tomorrow.

Name: Harlem Peterson.png
Views: 962
Size: 23.3 KB
Elsewhere: 24-year old LF Harlem Peterson (Montreal Alouettes) went 3 for 4 with 2 homers, 3 riblets, and 2 runs in a 4-3 loss against the Portland Lagers. Harlem appeared in 112 games for Montreal in 2075, hitting .279 with 12 HR and 66 RBI, and looks to be their everyday guy so far this season. The Georgia Bulldogs alum, whose 6+ RBI game against the Blue Mountain State Goats during his freshman season of college is still often mentioned during team broadcasts, has future all-star written all over him. In permanent sharpie – big, bold, block letters.

7 of 162: Michael Brisk (0-1, 4.70) @ Paul Yeager (0-0, 1.13)
Loss, 5-2
. Oof. There is nothing worse than dropping a set to Philadelphia, in Philadelphia… Yeager gave us fits over 8 innings of work – 3 hits, 2 earned, and 8 Ks – and SS Derek Jeter went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run in his first start of the season… 37-years young with a little sugar left in the tank. Brisky could only manage to stay in the game for 4.2 innings and gave up another HR… bad cheesesteak maybe? Dunno. Otto went 0 for 4, Pepper had the day off, because why not, and our Catcher Dom Cooke let one get by him that cost us a run. The mood on the flight to Ottawa is going to be maudlin.

Name: Heathcote Kinton.png
Views: 807
Size: 24.9 KB
Elsewhere: 2B Heathcote Kinton (Mexico City Jaguars) went 3 for 5 with three two-baggers and 4 RBIs in a 10-9 loss against the Ottawa Senators… what’s with all these stellar offensive performances in losses lately? I don’t like it. Kinton may be poised for a breakout campaign in 2076 – he’s come out of the gate with the quickness and is batting .357/.379/.714 with 2 homers and 10 RBIs so far…

Well, I think it’s safe to say that the sky is falling, that the hopes and dreams of 4-million plus Angelinos have been vanquished mercilessly and laid at the feet of Palmer Parker… or, maybe I’m overreacting, and this is just how it goes in baseball... such a fickle business. So far, Otto’s been stuck in neutral, Pepper is playing at a level below that of a replacement player, and Brisky has been an absolute mess – easily the worst hurler on the club so far. I’ll need our bench coach to keep him off of the strip when we get to Montreal – things get crazy up north, and Brisky courts crazy. After this debacle we find ourselves sitting 2nd on the NL West Division table and a half-game behind the Las Vegas Outlaws – our next opponent, Ottawa, by contrast, is off to a 4-1 start including a 2-game mini sweep over the St. Louis Blue Birds that spoiled their home opener. We’ll need to focus on putting the ball in play when we face off against them as they have an offense that can give you fits.

Players of the Week (MLB):
  • LF Aaron Johnson, 26, Buffalo Nickels – 10 for 27 (.370) with 3 HRs, and 9 RBIs
  • 1B Ruben Zarate, 24, Brooklyn Atlantics – 10 for 22 (.455) with 3 HRs, and 3 RBIs

Player of the Week (NCAA):
  • 1B Gareth Haggerty, 21, San Francisco Dons – 15 for 34 (.441) with 6 HRs, 15 RBIs, and 15 runs scored

2076 Season (4/6 – 4/8)

4/6 – 4/8: Los Angeles Leopards (4-3, .571, 2nd NL West) @ Ottawa Senators (4-1, .800, 2nd NL East)
April in Ottawa can go either way weather-wise – neither of which feels like baseball. When we arrived, there was still a bit of snow on the ground, the clouds were thick, the mood dreary… and after having our ass handed to us in Philly, we fit right in. Ottawa’s offense has played like it was shot out of a cannon to start the season – 1st in runs, AVG, OBP, OPS, WAR, and wOBA, and tied for 2nd in HRs and Stolen Bags… they are basically a run-scoring juggernaut with a better than serviceable defense that has held opposing teams, both of them, to ~6 runs per game with the lions share of them being charged to their bullpen’s account. That’s where we’ll need to live if we are to steal a couple off these guys – we need good, long ABs against the starters, so we can work deep into their bullpen over the last couple of games in the series. Our staff will have their work cut out for them with leadoff man 2B Dick McTaggart already looking to be in midseason form and power hitters 1B Arnold Webster and 3B Germaine Sturdivant showing off the dividends their offseason workout regimen has paid. Could be a long few days for us here – we’ll have an opportunity to punch them in the mouth during game one when the untested SP Scottie Rene takes the mound in place of SP LaVaughan Stewart, who will spend ~4 months on the IL with shoulder inflammation. After that, however, things could get dicey in a hurry when we face the top of their rotation in the final two…

8 of 162: Merl Crawford (1-0, 1.17) @ Scottie Rene (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 4-3
. We got off on the good foot – sorta – and overcame three fielding flubs and another poor effort from Otto to secure the win. Merl was lifted during the 7th after our third error as a unit visibly upset him, Ethan scored, Pepper hit a run-scoring double, and Jacques secured his 3rd save in 4 attempts. Listen, we’ll take it – any time you’re gifted a win when the team commits three errors and fans 11 times you just have to thank your lucky stars and move on, gingerly, to the next…

Elsewhere: SP Harvey Allen, a senior playing for the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks, rung up 17 batters over 8.2 innings of work to leads his squad to a 4-3 victory over the MIT Equations. Harvey projects as a bullpen pitcher in the Majors and should hear his name called in the 2nd or 3rd round of this year’s draft. This was his 4th 10+ K game in NCAA play and his best effort by far – his previous best was 13 Ks and came against the Michigan State Spartans last season.

9 of 162: SP Kevin Herrera (0-0, 0.00) @ Samuel Herbert (1-0, 1.00)
Loss, 8-5
. Herrera was brutalized for 6 earned with Ottawa’s Dave Taylor and Dick McTaggart doing most of the damage… Ottawa hit a team cycle on us with 9 singles, 3 doubles, 2 triples, and a home run… for our part we still haven’t seen Otto’s form improve – he went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks today, and, outside of Pepper’s 3 for 4 day where he hit a double, a homer, and drove 3 in, the rest of the team seemed to follow Isaac’s lead. As a squad – we didn’t do much right today… we just sort of sputtered along while our starter struggled mightily on the mound. We’ll need to put this one in the rearview, collect ourselves, and move on to the next like it’s no big thing.

10 of 162: Julen Morales (1-0, 3.00) @ Julian Horne (0-0, 23.14)
Loss, 7-6
. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that my eyes lit up when I saw that we’d get a crack at Julian Horne today – a surefire and much-needed W seemed to be in the cards – and, as advertised he was woeful. The Ottawa starter lasted into the 7th but gave up 6 runs and 3 HRAs before calling it a day… the problem then was that our guy did the same in one way, 6 earned, and worse in the other, 4 HRAs. All told there were 8 home runs hit in this contest with the lions share, 5, going to Ottawa… it was, in effect, a homerun derby out here today – we got jacks from 3B Jarel White (working as our DH today), LF Andy Sheppard (his 3rd so far), and 2B Zippo Hollins (also his 3rd), while 3B Sturdivant, 1B Webster, RF Chance Bell, DH Tedd Bach, and CF Donavon Tayler did the honors for the Senators. There is no rest for the wicked, man… we’ll head back to LA a .500 ballclub, in 3rd place on the NL West table, shuffling along like some zombified version of ourselves that hasn’t had a taste of brains since the start of the apocalypse.

So much for preseason predictions, eh? We’re in a bad way here, folks, shuffling along aimlessly and stuck in a depressing miasma that is equal parts suffocating and unpleasant. Our offense has yet to click, our pitching has rooted itself firmly into the middle of the National League road, and even our staff seems to be half-assing it. If we are the best club in baseball as the preseason pundits so graciously anointed us, then we’re doing our level best to skirt that prediction and instead settle nicely into a middle of the road position where we can live comfortably numb away from the lofty expectations they’d have bestowed upon us. And, yes, I get it – we’ve been here before – it’s early, there is a lot of runway left, and, yes, this is baseball… but, here’s the thing, you only get one chance to make a first impression with the L.A. elite, and so far the only impression we’ve left is that of a slack-ass ballclub – this is not the kind of start that leads to a rollicking homecoming for our home opener against the Las Vegas Outlaws…

2076 Season (4/9 – 4/12)

Name: Phil Murray.png
Views: 787
Size: 20.1 KB
4/9: Our first day off… a much-needed respite from the grind and one that I spent a good portion of sitting in Owner Phil Murray’s office, situated nicely in downtown El Segundo (don’t worry, I left my wallet in the car), to discuss the club's sad state of affairs. Except, we didn’t really discuss the club, at least conventionally. Instead, we sat across from each other, in awkward silence, until his secretary came in with a platter of sushi & brie – a strange combination to be sure – which we sampled, in an equally awkward silence, until Phil leaned in and asked, “why do we have the brie, it seems unnecessary, right? I don’t think we need the brie”. And, listen, I know that, when taken by itself, the question doesn’t make sense – but, in a baseball context, I picked up what he was putting down. We’re a fattened ballclub, with ingredients in the pantry that don’t exactly jibe with the dish we’re trying to make… and, so, like any good & unreasonably impatient GM, I immediately went back to my office, wallet in hand, and proceeded to work the phones to shake things up…

Trades:
1B Archie Imanov is a solid ballplayer, an all-around good guy, and someone who, typically, doesn’t rock the boat – the problem with him then, from my perspective, is his is not the type of personality that deals well with the Los Angeles scrutiny… so, in my haste to undergo a brie elimination action, I traded Archie to Ottawa for 1B Arnold Webster (who is as good a hitter, but not as good in the field) and a low-key pitching prospect who isn’t currently tracking to make the big club anytime soon in LHP Victor Fuller, who will report to Compton from Windsor, Ontario.

RP Les Trost and our Closer, Jacques Jameson, were up next – Trost was a good fit, personality-wise, but, unfortunately for him, I had to package him into the deal to make the deal work – they’ll head off to Buffalo to join the Nickels for RHP Trev Anderson, who’ll get a spot in our starting rotation, and prospect LHP Ignazio Armendariz. This really amounts to a personality swap – Jameson was kind of a jerk and both of the guys we’re getting have reputations for being easy-going types that won’t get ruffled by an overzealous press corps. Skill-wise, we’ll look about the same.

In other news:
The International League opening day was today… our City of Compton Raiders got the opening day win against the Victoria Royals by a score of 3-1. Pitching prospect, Trevor Dotson, put in a solid 6 innings of work, though he did walk 4 batters, and new addition, and future Los Angeles Superhero, OH HONG, went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks… nice Otto impression from our future star here…

4/10 – 4/12: Las Vegas Outlaws (5-4, .556, 2nd NL West) @ Los Angeles Leopards (5-5, .500, 3rd NL West)
Las Vegas is as good a home opener opponent as we could’ve asked for – their offense sputters along and, like ours, hasn’t found its way around the pace car… they’re below average in every offensive category, topping out at 7th in runs and OBP. Their pitching is better, top five so far, but looks to be playing a bit over their head so far if our analytics department is to be believed. Their #1 & #2 starters have struggled, each with a 5+ ERA, while their #3 through #5 have turned in a 2.08 ERA or less through nine games. Their best starter and reliever are both out for two months, their closer has been lights out, and their offense, led by SS Ray Gerhold (a potential hall of fame talent) and 3B Homer Wingard, has yet to take flight… they are, in essence, a lot like us. So, this set will be about pride – who has it, who can dig deep enough to put their best foot forward. We’re at home, in front of our notoriously lackadaisical fans, surrounded by our wives, girlfriends, and mistresses… so, it’s either a recipe for disaster or just the home cooking we need to get this train back on the tracks.

11 of 162: Cam Murphy (1-1, 5.79) @ Cole Guzman (2-0, 0.64)
Loss, 10-5
. Clearly, there is a glitch in the matrix… Guzman got smashed – he was pulled before the 3rd inning after a disastrous 6 ER performance – Otto continued to look like a guy who’s never swung a bat before – 0 for 4, an RBI on a SAC FLY, and a K – and our lone bright spot came from new guy, 1B Arnold Webster, who went 5 for 5 with a 2-run homer in his debut. Another error for Mullens, his 2nd, highlighted another poor defensive effort from the La La’s… Lady Gaga’s great-granddaughter, Lady GooGoo, left early – which will undoubtedly lead the story in tomorrow’s edition of the L.A. Times: Hologram Edition.

Name: Arnold Webster.png
Views: 779
Size: 25.1 KB
Arnold Webster was at the head of a Los Angeles Leopards’ hit parade today at Leopard Stadium. The 27-year-old went to the plate 5 times and came away with 5 hits, but it was the Las Vegas Outlaws that marched off with the 10-5 win. Also, in former Leopard news, RP Les Trost was injured in his first appearance in Buffalo and will be out for the rest of the season with a torn UCL… ouch!

12 of 162: Shiro Nakamura (1-0, 1.13) @ Michael Brisk (0-2, 5.84)
Win, 7-6
. Man oh man, when Brisky is on all is right with the world – the starlets swoon, the men rush out to purchase mustache oil, and we, generally speaking, win ballgames… he wasn’t really on tonight – it’s normal – but we won anyway… Webster continued his torrid start in a Leopards kit – 4 for 6 with a two-bagger, a homer, 2 RBIs, and the run to go with it – and Otto came out of his shell a bit on a 2 for 3 day with a 2-run moonshot, a run, and a walk. The real story here though was PEPPER who, in a tied, taut ballgame, sauntered up to the plate in the bottom of the 11th to deliver a walk-off, run-scoring single that sent our hometown fans, or those who stayed for the whole thing, into a fit of euphoria. Long live PEPPER GRANT!

13 of 162: Jack Sanchez-Flores (0-1, 5.52) @ Trev Anderson (2-0, 1.10)
Loss, 6-2
. Oof. Trev was just a tick under stellar for us here… 7.2 IP, 6 H. 1 earned, 4 K’s – but the bullpen was dismantled in a top of the 9th that saw the Outlaws charge 5 runs to our account. Webster hit a solo-homer, Ethan went 1 for 5, Otto 0 for 3 with a K, and Pepper was given the night off. A poor offensive showing from the club coupled with an even worse pitching display will, undoubtedly, be enough to earn me a phone call from Phil Murray that will leave me as uneasy and confused as the meeting I had in his office did.

This is not the start we were looking for, and, if I’m honest, not the start I’d have even imagined was possible at the outset of our tricentennial campaign… we are playing the type of low-down, grimy, unkempt brand of baseball reserved for the cellar dwellers of the Strangeverse… that disheveled, ragtag band of ne'er-do-wells that seemingly exist to prop clubs like ours up into the upper echelons of Strangeverse folklore. But, here we are, a card-carrying member of our leagues rank and file… and, we belong here too – it’s exactly where we should be given the ho-hum approach to baseball we’ve put on display to start the season. I’d like to focus on the good, but there really isn’t any, and being ranked 1st in HRs doesn’t help temper the fact that, despite all that power, we suck right now. A sub-.500 club, plying their trade in the City of Angels, is a recipe for disaster… this town is comprised of a super fickle populace that will drop you faster than they do the nose they were born with. We’re on the verge of becoming persona non grata – just another thing in a town that has more things than it knows what to do with. It’s a sad state of affairs, man.

2076 Season (4/13 – 4/15)

4/13 – 4/15: Austin Grackles (5-7, .417, 5th NL West) @ Los Angeles Leopards (6-7, .462, t-3rd NL West)
On paper, when you look at the Grackles, they are exactly where you’d expect them to be – a lineup with little to no pop (11th in HR’s), impatient (9th OBP), and a staff that lacks in both the stuff and control departments (12 RA, Starters ERA, and Bullpen ERA)… theirs is not a club that should inspire any confidence from the Austin faithful. Is it a rebuilding year, a never-built year, or just the neglected plaything of Owner Victor Davies (who made his fortune off his father’s whiskey business and has squandered the profits on a line of less-than-thoroughbred racing horses and a baseball club)? Who knows… what is clear is that so far this year we’ve been remarkably similar to these Grackles… we’re both 4-6 for our last 10 (though they’ve won their last two in a row), possess rDiff’s in the red, and can’t seem to get our motors running. The difference, or early season surprise as it were, is that everyone knew that Austin had a stock Hyundai motor under the hood and assumed that we were lighting up an Italian tuned high-performance engine when we turned it over to get the season underway… now, people are starting to wonder about our lead mechanic, and the chorus of folks calling for my head seems to be growing by the day.

Projected pitching matchups (LA//Austin):
LHP M. Crawford (2-0, 1.26 ERA) versus RHP M. Borello (0-2, 8.71 ERA)
LHP J. Morales (1-0, 5.40 ERA) versus RHP C. Cornejo (0-1, 6.75 ERA)
RHP C. Guzman (2-1, 3.94 ERA) versus RHP R. Padilla (1-0, 15.43 ERA)

14 of 162: Win, 8-6.
Webster continues to dominate – 3 for 3, THREE HOMERS, 3 RBIs, 3 runs, and a walk, Zippo hit a 3-run jack, and we win despite a poor performance from Merl (4 innings, 5 earned), another no show from Otto (0 for 4), and a hitless day from Pepper (he did get hit by a pitch though). We’ll take them any way we can get them at this point…

15 of 162: Win, 9-1.
First thing’s first… new guy, Arnold Webster, has hit at least one homer in 5 straight games. He looks good wearing our kit, don’t ya think? Otto woke up a bit – 2 for 5 with a double, a jack, and 5 RBIs, Julen was solid over 6 innings of work (7 Ks, 1 earned), and Zippo put his 5th ball out of the park. Pepper went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks… yikes – but, two wins in a row, so we’ll deal with him later.

16 of 162: Loss, 5-2.
All good things must come to an end… our 9 Ks balanced out our 9 free passes in this one and we couldn’t overcome Otto’s 0 for 3 day or Guzman’s second straight start where he’s allowed 5 or more runners to score. Pepper went hitless and grounded into a double play, Ethan scored on a solo homer, and, as a squad, we left 9 runners stranded before this loss was entered into the permanent record.

Where, oh where has Mr. Isaac gone?!? 2075 MVP, 2076 also-ran...

With only the moon to guide our way, we’ve navigated back to .500 – of course, with Otto largely relaxing below deck the entire time… we’ll need him to turn this start around quickly if we are to gel into the type of club we all know we are capable of being. Even with 3 homers and 11 RBIs a .169/.275/.339 slash isn’t going to cut it from our captain. Nevertheless, we’ve come through these rough seas rated 1st for OPS, bWAR, wOBA, and HRs, while our pitching and defense have been, well, suspect – 10th in RA, 9th in Starters ERA, and dead last in FIP and pWAR. With Otto, the rest of the guys have stepped up a bit to fill in the gaps, but, amongst our pitching staff, no one, down to a man, has done the same. Our pitching coach has some explaining to do… I better get him in a sit down before Phil comes calling…Elsewhere... Down on the farm - SP Rad Taylor gave up 7 runs in 6.1 innings of work in his second start of the International League season... so, we got that going for us.

2076 Season (4/17 – 4/19)

4/17 – 4/19: Los Angeles Leopards (8-8, .500, 2nd NL West) @ Brooklyn Atlantics (5-10, .333, 6th NL East)
Brooklyn is looking a lot like what the doctor ordered…. 12th in runs scored, a .201 AVG as a team (that’s last), and 7th for Starters ERA. In short, these guys stink… usually. Look, we have a knack for making clubs look good and with the top of their rotation set to make appearances and with Brisky taking the mound first for us… all bets are off. Their lone bright spot in the lineup is 1B Ruben Zarate who’s off to a good start with a .333 average and 5 homers so far – after that, thing get real grim, real quick. Let’s hope that the La La’s can take advantage.

Here are the projected pitching matchups, our pitchers listed first:
RHP M. Brisk (0-2, 6.41 ERA) versus LHP I. Zuno (2-0, 2.05 ERA)
RHP T. Anderson (2-0, 1.13 ERA) versus RHP S. Dahlgren (0-2, 9.00 ERA)
LHP M. Crawford (2-0, 3.44 ERA) versus RHP C. Tunnell (0-2, 3.05 ERA)

17 of 162: Win, 6-1.
Brisky came through with a vintage, 8 inning performance where he allowed only one run, Webster put his 7th ball out of the park, and Zippo Hollins registered his 6th long ball. Otto scored, Pepper did too, we hit three doubles & three jacks, and completed two highlight-reel worthy double plays. Good stuff from the yellow caps tonight – and when you factor in the fact that we flew all the way in from LA late last night to get here this result should instill some much-needed confidence in the club.

18 of 162: Loss, 6-5.
Brooklyn did all their damage late while we scored all of our runs in the top of the 6th… another homer for Webster, the guy is putting everything over the fence, Otto struggled yet again, Pepper scored another run but was a non-factor otherwise, and despite our defensive prowess being put on display in the form of two more DPs we just couldn’t get it done. I’m starting to see a pattern here – it’s a tale of two clubs… world-beaters one game and doormats the next.

19 of 162: Loss, 4-2.
Merl was solid over 5.2 innings – 5 hits, a run, 3 walks, and 7 Ks – but his pitch count got away from him and his replacement, RP Felix Riviere, gave up the ghost to the tune of 3 runs in just a batter over one inning. Webster failed to put a ball out of the park, Otto’s descent to the 7th circle of hell is nearly complete (0 for 3… does he even know how to play baseball anymore), and we stranded 6 base runners as a club. Plus side – there isn’t one, but, Ethan Mullens put a ball out of the park, so that’s something we can celebrate on the flight back home… if I even have a seat on the plane at all.

Elsewhere: C Joel Dockery, of the San Dimas Community College Wyld Stallyns, whose mustache seems mysteriously over-developed for a college kid, went 3 for 5 with two, two-baggers, a homer, 6 RBI, and two runs in his clubs 15-11 win over the MIT Equations… Listen, Dockery isn’t talented enough to ever make the majors, he tops out at a 30 POT, but, when he’s at home holding court at his monthly poker game back in Massachusetts, the story about the time he single-handedly defeated a team of uber-nerds from MIT will go over fabulously – no matter how many times his boys have heard it.

Listen, there’s not really much to say… we suck right now. Plain and simple. 12th in base running, FIP, and pWAR – 7th in AVG and OBP… ours is a club stuck in neutral, low on gas, and trying to draft behind a semi to make it to the exit. We can barely hit, our superstar is anything but (I’m looking at you Otto), and our pitching is, well, pathetic. My kids' T-Ball team could tee off on our rotation – our ace, Cole Guzman, has a 5.14 ERA, our #2 is sitting at 4.88, and we have three relievers with a 10+ earned run average. We’ve given up 27 home runs already for Pete’s sake! That’s three more than the next club. Hell, the only thing going our way right now is our fielding… not that it matters – I mean who cares if you can field the ball when most of them are leaving the park.

2076 Season (4/20 – 4/23)

Name: OH HONG.png
Views: 761
Size: 26.5 KB
Down on the farm… we had another day off, our third this month, but our development club, nestled in the heart of beautiful Compton, California did not… instead, they busied themselves by defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets by a score of 7-6, largely due to the efforts of one of my all-time favorite StrangeVerse players to ever come along… 1B OH HONG went 2 for 2 with 2 walks, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and a homer off blue-chip pitching prospect Mirko Samsonenko. The only knock on HONG is that he played his college ball at Duke… a sad fact that we will let slide because his future with our club looks so bright. The kid is legend.

4/21 – 4/23: Pittsburgh Pipers (10-9, .526, 4th NL East) @ Los Angeles Leopards (9-10, .474, 4th NL West)
The Pipers are better than their record would suggest – they have a lineup that can smash anchored by LF Tony Voorhis, a real lunch-pail type that is the prototypical Pittsburgh ballplayer, and young up & coming superstar, Tom Franzone, who is tracking to be a future all-star with serious HR potential. But wait, there’s more… their rotation is tip top too… their Ace has come out of the gates filthy – 3-1, 2.23 so far – and the rest of their staff has fallen in line right behind him. This is a dangerous club that arrives in town at a very precarious time in my career… rumor has it that Phil and his wife’s sister will be in the owner’s box for the set, that he’d like to have a word with me, and that the word he wants to have starts with an f and ends with a K. Look, we need to put on a good showing over the next three days – if we don’t, I may earn the most embarrassing curtain call of my professional life.

Here are the projected pitching matchups, our pitchers listed first:
RHP C. Guzman (2-2, 5.14 ERA) versus RHP R. Garrett (3-1, 2.23 ERA)
LHP J. Morales (2-0, 4.29 ERA) versus RHP D. Jefferson (2-1, 6.27 ERA)
RHP M. Brisk (1-2, 4.88 ERA) versus RHP J. Allen (2-2, 2.10 ERA)

20 of 162: Loss, 4-1.
Guzman was better than he has been but drops to 2-3 on the year after giving up three runs through the 8th inning. We could only manage to secure four hits in the game and none of them belonged to Otto or Pepper… Otto, it should be noted, is now hitting a buck forty-nine on the year. Voorhis, Pittsburgh’s current hard-working, no-nonsense captain, led the charge with a 3 for 4 day that included TWO HOMERS, 3 RBI, and 3 runs.

21 of 162: Loss, 5-3.
Again, our yellow caps are unable to muster much in the way of resistance – 6 hits, 3 runs, and an error for the club today. Webster continues to have the hot hand, but his efforts, while mighty (2 for 4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R), are not enough to carry us across the finish line. In fact, our 6 hits were spread across only three batters – Ethan, Arnold, and Ernie did the “damage” for us while Julen did damage to us in 4.2 innings of work where he allowed 5 runs and gave up 2 jacks. Pittsburgh hurler, Dom Jefferson, improves to 3-1 on the year… the 6’7”, 32-year old is now off to the best start of his 6-year major league career – a late bloomer it would seem.

Name: Hudson Dorsch.png
Views: 742
Size: 26.6 KB
Elsewhere: SP Rad Taylor, pitching for your CITY OF COMPTON RAIDERS, put in 7, shutout innings of work and fanned 4 batters in a 4-0 win over the Kent Comets. 2B Robbie Camacho, a 33-year old career minor leaguer whose window is closing fast, showed our youngsters how it’s done in a 2 for 4 performance with a solo homer and 2 runs. Compton is off to a 4-9 start so far in the International League, so, while it is nice to get a win somewhere in our organization, there’ll be no shelter in our development system as they suck too. Oh, and before I forget, SP Hudson Dorsch (pictured above), of the Pepperdine Waves, did the unthinkable today… the blue-chip prospect put on a performance for the ages and one that is sure to go down in the Pepperdine history book – A PERFECT GAME at the expense of the Villanova Wildcats for Dorsch – 9 IP, 0 HA, 0 R, 0 BB, 16 K, all on 122 pitches.

22 of 162: Win, 3-1.
We avoid the home sweep – thank heavens – and in so doing, I avoid losing my job… Brisky had his command and gave us 8 no-nonsense innings, allowing only 5 hits and a run while fanning 6. Webster put a triple on the board, his first, Otto got an RBI on a SAC FLY, Pepper drove two in on his 5th double of the season, and we managed to scratch out the victory here despite stranding 7 runners. Pittsburgh’s starter, Josh Allen, didn’t have his best stuff – he labored through 6 innings, doled out 3 free passes, and allowed 3 runs to score. Voorhis and Franzone both went 2 for 4 but couldn’t find their way to back home as their teammates couldn’t be bothered to bring them around. This wasn’t a good win, it was a necessary win.

You always want to give the home fans something to get excited about. When you can’t do that, it’s critical that you get a win before heading back out on the road so you skip out of Dodge on a high note… or something like that. We head out to San Jose for a 3-game set as a club that is stuck in a rut, resigned to its fate to live out the tricentennial campaign as an also-ran. Our confidence is nonexistent, the in-fighting has begun (Brisky and Catcher Dom Cooke got into a scrap over a game of Yahtzee on the plane), and our staff, down to our travel coordinator, is on edge. And they should be – something’s got to give, changes may be necessary, and if we don’t start to fulfill some, any of the promise the baseball punditry heaped on us prior to the start of this campaign we may all end up tending bar in the Bahamas like some Cocktail burnout who can’t master the cup flipping tricks and who can’t even get a glimmer of Elisabeth Shue’s attention.

2076 Season (4/24 – 4/26)

4/24 – 4/26: Los Angeles Leopards (10-12, .455, 4th NL West) @ San Jose Seals (6-16, .273, 6th NL West)
Our return to San Jose for a 3-game set couldn’t come at a better time, for a better group of guys. The last time we met, to kick off the tricentennial campaign, we were just a loose collection of young whippersnappers, footloose, and fancy-free – we were the chosen ones, every baseball prognosticators favorite to run roughshod over all comers in our quest for immortality. And we played like it too – a 3-1 series win, in their park, and looking every bit the world-beater, everyone said we were. But that was then, and this is now… So here we are, a loose collection of stiffs sauntering into San Jose like a group of middle-schoolers who weren’t looking forward to this field trip – a would-be Viking welcoming committee straight outta Valhalla with designs on taking everything you hold dear, albeit one without the required energy to do so as we’ve run out of lutefisk and all the fruit we had aboard rotted during the first leg of our journey. But maybe it doesn’t matter – after all with the Seals being one of the few clubs that playing worse than us, we don’t need to come out like barbarians at the gate. There is no gate… just their ho-hum club, last in every important offensive category, meeting us in their park to do battle against our equally ho-hum collection of misfit toys… in front of their two fans and an usher. Don’t look now, this has disaster written all over it.

Here are the projected pitching matchups, our pitchers listed first:
RHP T. Anderson (2-0, 2.40 ERA) versus RHP P. Balazs (2-2, 3.38 ERA)
LHP M. Crawford (2-0, 3.00 ERA) versus RHP P. Zielinski (0-3, 6.86 ERA)
RHP N. Weiser (1-0, 1.59 ERA) versus RHP C. Keaton (0-4, 9.35 ERA)

23 of 162: Loss, 2-1.
We’ve sunk to a new low… but, I know we can and will find a way to go even lower eventually. Trev Anderson acquitted himself nicely here – 8 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, and 7 Ks – but, newly appointed closer, Julen Morales, let it all slip away as the Seals anemic offense found a way to walk us off in the bottom of the 9th on a 3B Khalid Zamara 2-run home run. Otto went 2 for 4 with a HR, he likes to tease, Pepper got a hit, and Ethan swiped a bag… but, other than that, we may as well have not shown up at all. We lollygag in the outfield, lollygag in the infield… ah, whatever, no need to finish that statement – you know what we are.

24 of 162: Loss, 8-3.
The bottom has officially dropped out – we are the Fisher King and local LA sports talk radio is the culprit. Crawford got destroyed here – 5 innings of work, 6 runs allowed – Webster hit his 10th jack in a Leopards kit (13th overall), Kyle Weaver, in his first start, went 2 for 3 with a double and a run, and Otto, in what is beginning to sound like one of those broken records my great, great grandfather told me about, went 0 for 4 with 2 juicy Ks. Pepper got a hit, cool, and committed his second fielding flub of the season, not cool. You know what else isn’t cool? Anything to do with my Los Angeles based Leopards.

25 of 162: Win, 4-1.
Well, at the very least, we managed to avoid being swept by the lowly San Joe Seals… that feels low-key good, I suppose. Guzman had a nice bounce-back performance in 7 innings of work where he fanned 7 batsmen, Ethan went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Otto managed two secure a couple of hits, though he left 5 on base, and Julen Morales picked up his first save of the season on 11 pitches in the 9th. 5 swiped bags for the club too, just wrecking the base paths with Jarel White, Ethan, and Otto (x3!) doing the honors.

After this debacle in San Jose we’re 3-7 over our last 10 games, have losing records at home and on the road, and are 8-12 against right-handed pitchers. Our offense, due in large part to the power we’ve put on display so far, is ranked a solid 5th in the National League – and when you consider the fact that Otto has been a complete dumpster fire so far, this could bode well for our future… I mean the guy is a former MVP winner, his talent isn’t going to just fall off a cliff, right? Right?!? Our problem, or the most glaring of them, is our pitching where we are ranked 8th in the NL – we’re not getting many K’s, are giving up way too many dingers, and have, recently, had control issues. It’s been quite the slog so far – a long, arduous, and wholly uncomfortable slog – but, with three games left in the month, we’ll have the opportunity to salvage a bit of pride and finish it up with a .500 record. To do that, all we have to do is sweep the Phoenix Coyotes in their ballpark… should be no problem for the club picked to win over 100 games this year, right? Right.

2076 Season (4/27 – 4/29)

4/27 – 4/29: Los Angeles Leopards (11-14, .440, 4th NL West) @ Phoenix Coyotes (13-12, .520, 3rd NL West)
First off, let’s get one thing straight, in the wild, a coyote is no match for a leopard. Even one as hobbled and malnourished as us… but, we’re not in the wild and, let’s be honest, we’re not just hobbled, we’ve lost a leg. Phoenix has put something snappy together so far in 2076 – they’re right where I’d have expected them to be… treading water and doing just enough to meet the 10-minute PADI certification requirement. So far, that’s enough to be considered a much, much better club than ours and it is more than enough to give me pause. Three days in Phoenix, three days to right the ship – or, if it all comes tumbling down like a house of cards, my last three days on the job. We have a lot riding on this – my stress level is in the red, I’ve started to day drink prior to heading to the ballpark, and I haven’t made a frivolous purchase since this campaign began. We’ll have our chances here – Phoenix has a subpar bullpen, so if we can get past their starters early enough in each of these games, we should be able to put some runs on the board. Will it be enough to get the sweep? Probably not. But, unless the club wants to see some major changes, we’ll need to find a way to get it done.

26 of 162: Loss, 5-0.
Well, that’s that, I suppose… we won’t get the sweep, we won’t work our way back to .500 to close out the month, and we won’t be keeping a sizable chunk of our bullpen much longer… SP Newton Weiser gave up four runs in his first professional start (14th total appearance), Zippo committed his 4th error, and Webster, in a rare off day, fanned three times in the game. We played terribly here, and, though they got the win, the Phoenix fans were treated to a pretty boring contest. How boring? Well, Phoenix 2B Scott Kaszuba nabbed the third star of the game on a 0 for 1 performance where he added a SAC FLY RBI and a run. The good times were rolling in Phoenix, folks… word is that all unsold tickets for tomorrow’s game have been marked down by 50%.

27 of 162: Win, 4-3.
OK, yeah… I remember these guys. Brisky gave us 7.1 innings of work, allowed three to make it home, and fanned 7, and Pepper Grant went 2 for 5 with a double, a homer, 2 RBIs, and a run. Team cycle for the La La’s… doubles from Webster, Weaver, and Grant, a triple from Zippo, and a homer from Pepper. All four of our runs came with 2 outs on the board – which is interesting because we scored each run in a different inning… also, it was Weaver’s run-scoring double in the top of the 11th that closed the show for us here… some late heroics from the injury replacement.

Elsewhere: SS Oliver Vallee, of the Wyoming Cowboys, went 5 for 6 with two, two-baggers, a homer, 7 RBIs, and 3 runs in his clubs 17-2 win over Texas Tech. His game score of 111 was only good enough to place him at 6th best of the year… the Cowboys managed to charge 7 runs to two of Texas Tech’s pitchers – it took 5 innings to put that many on the starter and only 1.2 more innings to do the same to the first reliever to get the ball.

28 of 162: Win, 5-2.
Hey! We won a series – weird. Trev was solid, 2 earned and 6 Ks, DH Jarel White hit a 2-run bomb, Zippo hit his 4th double of the season, and Pepper got hit by a pitch. Trev left early with an undisclosed injury – diagnosis is pending… It’s nice to get a series win, especially after such a tough road in the early going of the tricentennial campaign – and hopefully, we can carry this small bit of good fortune forward into May and turn this thing around before it gets away from us.

Elsewhere: CF Roy Schoenherr, of the Seattle Metros, went 5 for 5 with a double, 3 RBIs, and 4 runs, and teammate, LF Aitor Cubas, went 3 for 3 with two, two-baggers, a homer, and 4 RBIs in an 18-8 win over their nemesis, the Portland Lagers. Of note… Schoenherr was only in the game because every day CF Lonzo Gonzo was injured early in the game.

Monthly Awards:
AL BotM: LF Aitor Cubas, SEA - .351, 11 HR, 26 RBIs, 27 runs
NL BotM: 1B Arnold Webster, LAL - .364, 12 HR, 23 RBIs, 23 runs, .422 OBP
AL PotM: Ash Newman, VAN – 5-1, 2.53 ERA with 35 Ks
NL PotM: CL Don Haag, NO – 13 for 13 in Saves with 23 Ks in 16.1 innings of work

A 12-14 April… SMH – let’s hope we have a better go of it in May.

2076 Season (May Recap)

2076 Season (May Recap)
From the outset – we knew that May would be tough, that it would test our mettle as a club, that, once complete, it would have a lot to say about our 2076 campaign. We entered the month with a noticeable limp – a 13-15 club staring down the barrel at a prohibitive schedule that included 19 road games and only 9 at home. Before flipping past the final page of this chapter we would take the kind of back-to-back road trip that would give Clark Griswold pause – 6 days in the Lonestar State (3 in Dallas, 3 in Austin), 4 in Mexico, and 3 days of creole spiced debauchery in New Orleans before heading up north to Ottawa and Brooklyn… do not pass go, do not collect $200. And, for all our efforts, the travel, and time spent on planes we turned in a month that can only be described as more of the same… a 13-15 month (we’re now 26-30 even though the Pythagorean would have that flipped), an abysmal 16-22 record on the road, and a superstar in Otto that just can’t seem to get his motor running (.248, 8, 31). All told we were swept in New Orleans and in Brooklyn, got no-hit by New Orleans SP Luc Felix, a former Vic Pacheco award winner whose previous best was a 3-hitter in 2073, had an opponent hit for the cycle against our staff, and were walked off 3 times. It’s official – the Los Angeles Leopards, media darlings to start the tricentennial campaign, is now its whipping boy… the team that fans outside of Los Angeles love to hate is really feeling the burn, the pointing, the laughter. If we are to turn this thing around, to fulfill any of our preseason promises, we’ll need to play gangbusters going forward… the only problem with that is we may not have the wherewithal to pick ourselves up and put the good foot, any foot, forward.

2076 Season (June Recap)

2076 Season (June Recap)
You call us Johnny Appleseed – we’ve returned from our battles in June to find that our valley is vibrant with life and is peacefully settled by fans who have started to fill up some of the seats on our bandwagon… We’re Rikki-Tikki-Tavi running roughshod over every Cobra (Kai) in our path like some self-styled Daniel-san crane kicking every opponent put in front of us on our path to redemption. We’d finish the month 17-11, improve to a semi-respectable 43-41 record overall, and root ourselves into 2nd on the NL West table. We’d get some good individual performances this month too – LF Andy Shepard hit two jacks in a 4-2 win over Denver on the 6th, and Otto, the Harry Houdini of the L.A. sports scene, hit 3 jacks in an 8-0 win over the Las Vegas Outlaws on the 26th. Finally, after two months spent in relative obscurity, laughed at and dismissed by the cool kids, we’ve painted enough fences, sanded enough decks, and waxed enough cars to put our hard-earned skills on display and to, finally, get the girl. For now. We could always end up in Okinawa next month in a fight for our life… “Live or die, man?!?”

2076 Season (July Recap)

2076 Season (July Recap)
We’re on that good stuff now… pure, uncut, Michelle Pfeiffer, that white gold. The hangers-on have come out of the woodwork, players like Brisky are starting to make more local media appearances, and, it would seem that whatever it was that held us back in April and May is in the rearview. We are, as it turns out, what they said we were… 17-9 for the month, ranked 1st or 2nd in the National League for most offensive categories, with a +73 rDiff, and starting to make up ground on the Pythagorean. 1B Arnold Webster, 2B Zippo Hollins, and RF Ethan Mullens (more on him in a bit) all made the all-star team, our attendance has shown serious improvement (complete with the periodic A-lister), and the good times are rolling… or, and maybe this is more appropriate, the good times are killing me. This is baseball, after all, and, in baseball, you can’t get the good without paying a toll… in this case, the price was steep and the only currency the baseball gods would accept was our health. Otto went down with a fractured hand on the 2nd, he’ll be back in another week or so, Ethan went down with a fractured wrist, he’ll be back in a month or so, and, recent draft pick, SP Beau Skrivan, went down with a torn UCL and will miss 9 months or more… with every break comes a new challenge and with every new challenge comes another opportunity for Phil Murray to take a good, hard look at my contract. August could be the feel-good story of the summer, or, and this is more likely in my mind, it could be the final nail in the coffin of my big-league general management career… next stop, Bush League.

Leopards Team Leaders:
AVG: CF Ethan Mullens - .297
HR: 1B Arnold Webster - 31
RBI: 1B Arnold Webster – 63

Some Trades:
  • Friday, July 10th, 2076 - Traded 27-year-old minor league starting pitcher Phillip King to the New Jersey Generals, getting 26-year-old reliever Alvin Leaf and 22-year-old minor league reliever Shoji Shibuya in return.
  • Monday, July 20th, 2076 - Traded 25-year-old left fielder Kyle Weaver, 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Vincent Urquhart and 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Rad Taylor to the Montreal Alouettes, getting 24-year-old right fielder Mack Ramirez and 22-year-old minor league reliever Orlando Vasquez in return. This was not my finest work… instant regret.
  • Sunday, July 26th, 2076 - Traded 23-year-old minor league catcher Dylan Tucker and 23-year-old minor league shortstop Renfrew Chaille to the Austin Grackles, getting 31-year-old minor league reliever Hunter Lamb and 22-year-old minor league second baseman Sam Kilgour in return.

2076 Season (August Recap)

2076 Season (August Recap)
As we entered August, with both Otto and Ethan on the IL (in addition to a lot of pitchers), we knew it would mostly be about treading water for us – there would be no opportunity to pad our lead in the NL West unless we got unreal contributions from our rank and file. When our newly anointed All-Star, Zippo Hollins, went down on the 2nd with a severe hip strain, it very quickly became about just trying to not lose all the ground we had made up in June & July. We’d get Otto back on the 6th – he played much better than the pre-injury version that was on display to start the season – but lost him against on the 16th for a week and a half when he suffered an intercostal strain diving for a catch in the outfield. Ethan returned on the 26th, Otto returned, for the second time, a couple of days later, and, at that point, we were already 13-11 and treading water like a wannabe frogman who didn’t want to put in his DOR. All told, we finished 15-13 for the month, maintained a ½ game lead over the Las Vegas Outlaws in our division, and kept the good times sort of rolling despite our slight offensive decline… the key here, and this feels good to say, was our pitching, which has started to come around a bit with our entire 5-man rotation flexing a sub-4.00 ERA and improvement to 5th overall for pitching in the National League.

Hey Pauwoo, just discovered your re-start/re-brand here.
Glad to see this going again.

And I found myself wondering how many in this crowd understood your El Segundo/wallet joke. Just wanted to say that this A Tribe Called Quest fan got it and it was much appreciated. (Seriously, I follow your threads as much for the pop culture references as the baseball. When it comes to music, in particular, you and I do seem to vibrate on a similar wavelength.)

Thanks, Bird! Always makes me happy when I know you're around...

2076 Season (9/4 - 9/6)

9/4 - 9/6: Los Angeles Leopards (77-63, .550, 1st NL West) @ Phoenix Coyotes (72-67, .518, 3rd NL West)
We’ll start the final month of the regular season in Phoenix against a club looking to solidify its claim on one of the remaining Wild Card spots – at the very least as they are not so far out that taking the division is out of the question… the Coyotes excel in the pitching department where they are ranked 1st in RA (477) and ERA (3.27), but pair that dominance with a bootleg offense built to look like a 90s alt-rock cover band that leans too heavy into Oasis territory. You can only go to the well so often and when Major League pitchers pick up on the vibe that you’re looking to start off each plate appearance with the first few bars of ‘Wonderwall’, sneaking in the occasional change-up is elementary. Look, we know that this set won’t be a walk in the park – this is a better-than-solid club that is looking to start us off with All-World SP Landon Sampson in the first game… but, if we can navigate that challenge with aplomb, I like our chances to win the series as the last two contests will likely be stuffed to the gills with the kind of filler that drives the audience off the dancefloor in favor of some banal hipster conversation at the bar. A sweep would be excellent, no doubt, but if we don’t at least win the set 2-1, then my already dicey future will look a lot like the “floor is lava” game we all played as kids with no safe harbor to be found amongst the strewn about couch cushions given that they are already occupied by Sally and her booger-picking younger brother. My sippy cup is half full, you guys…

141 of 162: Cole Guzman (11-7, 3.74) @ Landon Sampson (14-5, 1.50)
Loss, 7-2
. Landon came, mostly, as advertised in allowing only one runner to score over 5.2 innings of work – that he doled out 4 free passes was unusual, but, that we were unable to capitalize was, sadly, not. Ethan went 2 for 4 with a solo homer, his 12th, Otto scored, and Pepper drove in a run… Webster & Mack hit doubles… so that was cool… but, outside of these low-key highlights, it was all Phoenix as they charged 3 runs to Cole’s account and added four more after he was yanked. We knew this one was iffy… so, on to the next – may we have fair winds and following seas for the rest of this journey.

Elsewhere: Philadelphia’s CF Norris Flaherty (pictured) went 2 for 3 with 2 bombs, 5 RBIs, and 3 runs to help his club overcome the four early runs their starter, Paul Yeager, allowed early in the contest. Flaherty put balls #26 and 27 out of the park for the surging Patriots as they went on to win by a score of 8-4 in St. Louis. Norris hit a Grand Slam against these guys back in 2076, almost a year to the date, so… I guess some things do get better with age. Note: He’s only 25, so tons of time left to insert himself into the StrangeVerse annuals of time…

142 of 162: Merl Crawford (9-9, 3.78) @ Rick Wright (12-9, 3.59)
Loss, 12-4
. Former UC Santa Cruz Banana Slug, and current Phoenix Coyote, Rick Wright went deep into the 7th before handing it off to the pen and held our suddenly anemic offense to 3 runs, and 1B Charlie Hultquist went 2 for 4 with a two-bagger, a jack, 5 RBIs, and 2 runs to help his club secure the series win. Mack scored twice, Isaac plated, and 1B Lee Sobania, a recent Compton call up after the roster expansion (we left OH HONG in AAA to season the kid up a bit – he’s not quite ready for prime time), drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double. All told we left 7 stranded and needed every single one of those to find their way home to even get ourselves within a run… the floor is lava, and I fear that I will soon have no feet.

143 of 162: Tommy Mathieu (11-7, 2.20) @ Liam Anderson (10-9, 3.23)
Loss, 5-2
. Swept, in Phoenix… it seems that after our game two loss, several of our, formerly responsible, players released themselves on their own recognizance and were up to no good – carousing late into the night… Mullens did his level best to keep us competitive – 4 for 4 with a two-bagger, a jack, and 2 runs – but no one else had anything left in their tank to go along for the ride… 8 stranded, Pepper hit weakly into a double play, and Arnold fanned twice to add to his team-leading strikeout total. For my part, I’ve changed my cell phone number… I mean, Phil can’t fire me if he can’t get a hold of me, right?

Elsewhere: Pittsburgh went gonzo on Brooklyn tonight – defeating the Atlantics by a score of 10 to NADA… SP Tim Kelly hurled a complete-game, 1-hit shutout with 10 Ks, budding superstar, 1B Tom Franzone, went 3 for 4 with a 3-run moonshot, and LF Tony "Don’t Call Me Jason” Voorhis (pictured) went 3 for 5 with a triple, a homer, 5 RBIs, and a couple of runs… that’s called teamwork, the old one team, one dream mentality… we could use some of that right about now.

Well, look… if you’re a big city club with your sights set on the promised land starting off the final month of the season on the wrong side of a sweep is a good way to keep your fans guessing, I suppose… in our case, however, given the up and down nature of this loose collection of stiffs, it comes off more like a rallying cry for the rest of the league. Our days at the top feel numbered – there’s a target on our back, and we’re letting would-be shooters line up only 50 yards away. We’ll need to reset ourselves in LA as we welcome the always dangerous, but hardly formidable, Mexico City Jaguars to town for a 3-game set.

2076 Season (9/7 – 9/9)

Mexico City Jaguars (69-74, .483, 4th NL West) @ Los Angeles Leopards (77-66, .538, 2nd NL West)
After having our behinds handed to us in Arizona like Dr. Greg Bradley had his handed to him the first time he attempted to take on the over-sized ants of Lizard Breath, California we’d return home to our own beds looking to recharge and steel ourselves up to do battle against our next opponent. In the Mexico City Jaguars, we get something that looks a lot like what the doctor ordered… a club that turned in a 12-17 month in August (after a rip-roaring 16-9 run through July) and one that has started off September like a prizefighter riding their bike after taking one clean on the chin… and with them at 1-5 so far this month, I like our chances here… What’s not to like? Well, for starters their roster boasts one of baseball’s best in 2B Heathcote Kinton (.292/.375/.523, 30 HR, 100 RBI), always a dangerous matchup, they have a better-than-serviceable offense capable of giving my staff fits, and the top of their rotation, who we’ll see in games 2 & 3, are as good as they come. They say that in baseball you’re only one ground ball with eyes away from putting a run together (do they say that? I’m not sure) and if there is any club as capable as ours of serving up meatballs at the most inopportune of times, it’s us. We gotta get these ones – make up some ground on the Las Vegas Outlaws (1 ½ games back after running into those ants of enormous size in Phoenix), put ourselves back up where we belong, and, hopefully, get me out of Phil Murray’s doghouse so I may live to GM for at least one more day.

144 of 162: Casey Tucker (3-5, 4.98) @ Michael Brisk (11-10, 3.57)
Win, 5-4
. Brisky was less than otherworldly and that was enough – 6.1 innings of work with 4 earned for LA’s favorite mustache flexing mid-rotation hurler – and PEPPER GRANT picked up his slack with a 3 for 4 performance that included a 2-run dinger (his 14th) and 2 runs. Otto secured a hit, scored, and swiped a bag, we hit a couple of two-baggers, and CL Anderson Parker put save #15 in the book. Side note: 2B Heathcote Kinton may be headed back to the rodeo after his 0 for 3 day… he did draw a walk though, so he should feel good about that.

Elsewhere: SP Luc Felix, of the New Orleans Gators, pitched a complete game, 4-hit shutout and fanned 12 during his teams 8-0 win over the St. Louis Blue Birds… the Gators put 12 hits on the board with leadoff man, 2B Telma Taveras (pictured), notching three of them to go along with his run and two RBIs. The win- puts New Orleans at 74-69 on the year and 5 games behind the NL East leading Philadelphia Patriots.

145 of 162: Bentley Hawkins (12-9, 4.55) @ Trev Anderson (3-1, 2.61)
Win, 8-0
. Team shutout! 6.2 from Trev (with only 4 hits surrendered and 7 K’s) and 2.1 innings from RP Nick Rich… three jacks – LF Andy Sheppard (22nd), CF Ethan Mullens (14th), and RF Mack Ramirez (9th in our kit)… and tow, two-baggers (one each for 2B Leandro Mercedes and PH Jarel White). A solid thrashing here with Ethan taking home the man of the match honor after going 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs, 2 runs, and a walk… Heathcote managed to get a hit for the bad guys (stranded!) but, as a team, the outmanned and outgunned Mexico City Jaguars were no match for the La La’s.

146 of 162: Lee Myers (9-13, 4.14) @ Cole Guzman (11-8, 3.79)
Loss, 9-7
. Credit to the Jags… they managed to pick themselves off the canvas and avoid the sweep… 3B Mustafa Boltz led the way for MC with a 2 for 3 performance that included a double, 3 runs, and 2 walks, and the Jaguars found a way to overcome our three home runs (PEPPER, Otto, and Mack) to walk away with the victory. SP Cole Guzman got folded up like a lawn chair – 3.2 innings, 6 earned, 2 walks, 1 HRA - and we committed 3 costly fielding flubs… on the bright side, we got some vintage PEPPER in this set – 2 for 4 with a double, a jack, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs – always nice to see him put something snappy together.

Okay, cool – we beat a team that we’re supposed to beat, are now only a 1/2 game behind Vegas and are starting to see some consistency out of our key players. Guzman’s in a bad way though – he’s turned in consecutive disastrous performances and hasn’t made it past 5 innings over that same stretch… could be fatigue, could be mental… dunno, I’m not a doctor. Either kind. What is clear is that, despite this series win, we haven’t really turned the corner from our ho-hum, 15-13 August, and are now just sort of running in place with a 4-4 record to kick off September. The road ahead looks good, though, with sets against St. Louis, Ottawa, and Austin, all sub-.500 clubs, on the docket over the next 9 games before we face off against Las Vegas in a 4-game series. The key for us here will be to run roughshod through the next 9 before putting some bad ones on the Outlaws to solidify our place atop the NL West table. Should be easy, right? Right.

2076 Season (9/11 – 9/13)

St. Louis Blue Birds (67-80, .456, 5th NL East) @ Los Angeles Leopards (79-67, .541, 2nd NL West)
The Blue Birds are struggling… shuffling along aimlessly and looking to put this season behind them. To what end, I don’t know – as a club that has been cash poor at their owner’s behest for years, and has only had one winning season in the last 5 years, St. Louis is starting to look like the baseball town that was but never will be again. The faithful have started to run out of patience, attendance is down by 11.8%, and while they do have some budgetary room it’ll only serve to line their owner’s pockets as their GM wouldn’t dare spend it and incur his wrath. Risk-averse, talent strapped, and with a staff that ranks DEAD LAST in the National League, this is a club that has fallen off multiple cliffs since securing their last title in 2068. They have some studs, sure, with SP Dimitri Pimentel, 2B Mike Duncan, and CF Lynden Urmanski coming to mind, but, after that the stockpile of talent is nonexistent. These guys have turned in losing months since going 9-17 in June and look to continue the trend here in September where they are off to a 3-7 start, and while we aren’t exactly blowing the doors off our opponents, this is as good an opportunity as we will get to make up a little ground on the Outlaws. We are, undoubtedly, under a lot of pressure to win here… this is not wonderful, we don’t exactly eat pressure.

Quick Hit: Your CITY OF COMPTON Raiders secured a playoff bid yesterday, grabbing the final wild-card spot in the IL on a 73-71 record. OH HONG is doing OK - .269, 12 HR, 71 RBIs – and our top two pitching prospects, Trevor Dotson (pictured) and Kordell Littles, while not otherworldly yet, have acquitted themselves nicely at this stage of their career. OH HONG (#10) and Trevor (#3) are our top prospects and our organization is one of only two (with the other being Virginia Beach) that has two up and comers in the top 10. We’ll still likely get bounced in the Wild Card round though….

147 of 162: Dimitri Pimentel (14-13, 4.15) @ Tommy Mathieu (11-8, 2.25)
Win, 4-1
. Up 2-0 in the 8th inning and with the game still up for grabs, Julen Morales gave us a shakey inning in relief, giving up a run before working his way out of a jam… we’d answer back in the bottom of that frame with a Mack Ramirez homerun and follow that up with a run-scoring double from PEPPER… we had just enough in the tank to take this one over the finish line. Otto went 2 for 4 with a run, we fielded two slick DPs, Anderson Parker picked up his 16th save, and we secure the win despite leaving 7 stranded over the course of the evening. 7 shutout innings from Mathieu too…

Elsewhere: Las Vegas lost to the New Orleans Gators by a score of 7-1… and with that, we are tied for 1st in the NL West. Their starter, Patrick Keith, got styled on for 5 innings and allowed four runners to plate.

148 of 162: Lenard Henos (1-4, 3.96) @ Michael Brisk (12-10, 3.64)
Win, 3-0
. Brisky was mint – 8.1 innings of work, 3 hits, and nothing gets across the plate – and Mullen put his 15th ball out of the park in the 5th to give us all the cushion we would need. Our first shared shutout of the season here too, with Parker taking the baton and earning his 17th save by striking out the last two batters of the game. PEPPER scored and started off a sweep double-play – long live PEPPER, he’s found the fountain of youth here lately.

149 of 162: Nick Eley (4-2, 3.43) @ Trev Anderson (4-1, 2.29)
Loss, 10-5
. Well, the wheels fell off – just when we get the good times rolling our carburetor springs a leak and we get a flat. The club was resilient though – we did our level best to mount a comeback with two runs in the bottom of the 7th but Otto would ground out with two runners on in the bottom of the 9th and squander an opportunity to lead us to victory… Mack Ramirez was fierce and went 2 for 3 with 2 jacks, 4 RBIs, 2 runs, and 2 walks, C Dom Cooke hit a 2-run homer, and we got stolen bases from Otto & Ethan. Normally an outburst like this would be good enough for a win, but Trev got chased out of the game during the 4th and our bullpen was out there under handing beachballs and allowed 5 runs over the remainder of the game.

Well, we’ve done it again, we’ve beat a team we were supposed to beat – all good, but, after dropping that last one, now find ourselves a full game behind the Las Vegas Outlaws and are sporting a 5-5 record over our last ten tilts. In fact, and this is exciting, we haven’t shaken ourselves out of August’s malaise and have carried that funk forward into September where we are off to a rip-roaring, and completely underwhelming, 6-5 start. On the bright side, Brisky is starting to deal, PEPPER is looking like the 27-year old version of himself, and our minor league outfit is having some success. They’ll play their first game of the International League Playoffs in Victoria BC tomorrow and we’ll have blue-chipper SP Trevor Dotson on the hill – should be a barn burner, so, if nothing else, should the big club stumble out of the gates against Ottawa in our park, at least our fans will have something else to turn their attention towards. Ottawa, it should be noted, has gone 11-2 so far in September… GULP. They have been sent here to destroy us.

2076 Season (9/15 – 9/17)

Ottawa Senators (72-77, .483, 4th NL East) @ Los Angeles Leopards (81-68, .544, 2nd NL West)
Ottawa, the cold, young, and tech-focused capital of Canada, has a lot going for it, but this season, until very recently, baseball hasn’t been one of them. It’s been something of a slog for the Senators – 5 consecutive losing months (though an 11-2 start in September is a welcome surprise), a sturdy IL, and poor pitching have held them back throughout 2076. Still, they’re only 5 seasons removed from their last championship, have the 7th ranked development system, and seem to have the right personnel in place to turn this thing around… eventually. Offensively, the team is led by LF Evan Prag (121 OPS+) and 1B Archie Imanov (112 OPS+), and, while 2B Dick McTaggart (106 OPS+) has been a disappointment, the offense has hummed for most of the season and finds itself ranked 3rd in the National League. Pitching has been the inverse – they’re better only than the beyond woeful Phoenix Coyotes and have given up the most home runs in the majors (aided in no small part by the fact that their park is the most HR friendly in the majors)… Frosty Dillard (3.42 FIP, 124 ERA+), a 36-year old reliever, is probably the best arm they have with their starting rotation in need of a complete overhaul (more groundball pitchers, more finesse)… on paper, we should handle these guys, but they’re hot right now, really hot, and we’ve been coasting for a month and a half.

150 of 162: Masaya Nakagawa (11-11, 3.98) @ Cole Guzman (11-8, 4.00)
Win, 3-2
. Cole worked himself into a bit of a groove over 5 innings of work where he let a couple of runs get across but held up better than he has recently, and RP Ignazio Armendariz secured the win in 3 innings of lockdown relief work. 1B Arnold Webster hit his 21st double of the season, Otto put his 20th ball out of the park, and PEPPER contributes to the cause with a SAC FLY during the bottom of the 2nd that put our first run on the board. Otto’s two-run jack in the bottom of the 6th proved to be the game-winner for us here – nice to see that he can still come through for the La La’s occasionally.

Elsewhere: Vancouver’s 1B Frodo Gonzales (pictured) went 4 for 5 with two, two-baggers, a dinger, and 6 ribbies in the Bears’ 9-4 win over the Orlando Stars. Frodo has been laying the smackdown since being called up from AAA Newport Beach on the 1st. The 24-year old, former UCLA Bruin could find himself as an everyday guy on the big club next season if he can keep this up. Also, our CITY OF COMPTON club took the first game of the International League Playoffs against the Victoria Royals, in Victoria, by a score of 5-1. SP Trevor Dotson was in command over 6.2 innings of work and only allowed two hits and one run while LF Wyatt Chrysler went 2 for 4 with a run and a ribbie to lead the offense. OH HONG went 1 for 4 and ground into a double play.

151 of 162: Keith Baeza (4-2, 3.07) @ Merl Crawford (9-10, 4.01)
Win, 5-2
. In 5.1 innings of work, Merl only allowed 5 hits and 2 runs while fanning 6 and walking NADA… we’ll take that from the youngster. Dom hit a 3-run homer, Mack and PEPPER put balls out of the park as well, and Anderson secured his 19th save of the season. Ottawa’s Prag went 0 for 4, Imanov went 1 for 4 with nothing else, and McTaggart sat on the bench – suddenly the Senators’ 3-game winning streak has given way to a 2-game skid, courtesy of the Yellow Caps… feels kind of nice, if I’m honest.

Elsewhere: COMPTON lost the second game, 4-2… Kordell was good though (7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 5 K).

152 of 162: Cuco Verhoeven (8-7, 4.40) @ Tommy Mathieu (12-8, 2.16)
Loss, 4-3
. Same old story here – we got what it takes, but not enough to get started… another series win, I like that, but also another sweep opportunity squandered. It’s been since July 10-12 that we’ve swept a club, we’re overdue… Here, Ottawa’s Dick McTaggart ran roughshod through our staff – 3 for 4 and a 3-run homer for the best player on paper in the Sens organization… he’s been a bit of a paper tiger this year as nagging injuries have slowed him down, but he was good enough to take it to us here tonight. PEPPER hit his 29th double and backup backstop, Yoshi “Fox Plaza” Nakamura (pictured), went 3 for 3 with two ribbies and a run.

We look like we’re starting to get warmed up a bit, have had some recent, low-key success in winning 3 straight sets since being swept in Phoenix. Unfortunately, Vegas continues to play well… full steam ahead for the Outlaws who have maintained their 1-game lead over us – protecting it like a priceless Fabergé egg… we have our sights set on swiping it, replacing it with a counterfeit, and leading that club on some wild-goose chase through India and West Germany. And, we’ll have our opportunities… we just need to find a Las Vegas-based diamond smuggling ring to join while we were visiting Texas to take on the Grackles… you can always find a merry band of ne’er-do-wells in the Lonestar State to get in cahoots with. Also, we experienced an ever so slight increase in fan interest after announcing that we have extended PEPPER GRANT (pictured) for $59M over 3 years. The guy is a world-class fielder with an uneven bat, killer personality, and is known as a natural-born leader… you’d think the fans would get fully behind that, but, not in LA – our fans want the glamour, followed by the squalor, followed by some good tabloid headlines… but, hey, that’s why we employ Brisky, right?

2076 Season (9/18 – 9/20)

Los Angeles Leopards (83-69, .546, 2nd NL West) @ Austin Grackles (69-83, .454, 5th NL West)
Austin is neck-deep in a full-on rebuild – stuck in quicksand for four seasons straight and currently moored to a 19th ranked development system, it’s hard to see what they are building, honestly, but that’s the claim they’ve put forward and who am I to debate that. While their future under GM Gaylord Poyner (reputation: poor) doesn’t seem to offer any shelter from the storm, most fans are focusing on the present because they are still in the thick of it – in short, it’s hard to be an Austin supporter in 2076. Their offense is in shambles, ranked 10th in OBP, 9th in OBA, and 10th in base running, and their pitching, especially that of their bullpen, looks more like a loose collection of scrubs picked last in gym class than they do a professional collection of hurlers. But this to be expected when your offense is led by 35-year old 1B Danny Green (112 OPS+)… there is opportunity to be seized here, priceless art to replace with fakes, and plenty of gadgets to play with along the way – we’ll have a fleet of Mini Coopers at the ready should we do what we’re capable of so our escape out of town will be all but guaranteed.

153 of 162: Michael Brisk (13-10, 3.49) @ Kenny Lurie (0-5, 7.61)
Win, 3-2
. Grackles Skipper, Cal Vazquez, lodged a complaint against Brisky during the game, he claimed that he was using the BBQ smudge that he spilled on his jersey before the game to load up the ball – the video was inconclusive – and, though the claim was crap, it did the trick as Brisky gave up a 2-run homer to 3B Curt Berryman as soon as play resumed. No worries, we were good for it – Webster, who went 1 for 1 with 3 walks and a run, stole second in the top of the 8th, and then made it home on a 2N Leandro Mercedes single two ABs later to secure the victory. PEPPER went 0 for 3 with 3 Ks in his first game after signing an extension – we make sound financial decisions here in LA. With this win, we’ve punched our ticket to the dance – playoff-bound, baby!

154 of 162: Cole Guzman (11-8, 3.99) @ Ryan Burg (16-6, 2.30)
Win, 6-1
. Return of the Mack… Ramirez went 2 for 4 with a two-bagger, a homer, and 3 runs for us here – leading the charge that Otto and Ethan would follow (both put balls out of the park) – and Cole Guzman gave us another quality, workmanlike performance over 5 innings where he allowed 6 hits and a run. We got two doubles with Webster joining in on Mack’s fun, Dom was hit by a pitch (in the thigh, he didn’t cry or nothing), and Pepper hit into a double play… all that security we gave him may have made him soft.

Name: Zippo.png

Elsewhere: COMPTON avoided elimination against the Victoria Royals at home, winning game 5 behind 2B Zippo Hollins’ (pictured), who is on a rehab assignment, performance – he went 2 for 4 with 2 jacks, 4 ribbies, and a couple of runs. The Raiders fielded four double plays in the game… sounds like a new team record, not sure.

155 of 162: Tommy Mathieu (12-8, 2.19) @ Joshua Moeller (6-10, 4.44)
Win, 10-2
. SWEEP! Mack went 3 for 5 with another homer and 5 RBIs, Webster hit his league-leading 40th bomb (a 3-run shot with 2 outs on the board), Otto walked twice and scored twice, PEPPER went 4 for 6, hit his 30th double, and scored, and Zippo, back up where he belongs with the big club, scored on his first day back… 15 hits, 10 runs, Ethan & Zippo both got tagged by angry pitchers, we swiped a couple of bags (Otto and Arnold), and we did all that with 15 left stranded… off to the Mini Coopers – it’s time to get outta dodge.

So, we did it, we got the coveted sweep – there was much dancing, much rejoicing, and way too many beers… we’re still a full game off Las Vegas’ pace though as they trucked Phoenix while we were doing the same to Austin. And with that, we’ll head their way – a caravan of Mini Coopers headed to the Las Vegas strip to reclaim what’s ours. This will, undoubtedly, be the most important series of the regular season for us – if we can get three of the four, then we can head off to San Jose with our destiny in our own hands to close out the 2076 campaign… there are 1269 miles to Las Vegas, we’ve got a full tank of gas (that’s not enough), half a pack of big league chew, it’s hot out, and we’re wearing sunblock… hit it! Next stop… SIN CITY and we’re not leaving without a nice comp and a free buffet.
