windows update
Oh, boy. A big windows update installing. Can't wait to see what they've messed up on me this time.
I have a funny feeling about this. The install is stopped at 92% for over half an hour now. I shut it down and restarted my PC. I just don't trust them. Have no faith in them. None. Last edited by zappa1; 06-17-2020 at 05:03 PM. |

Printing bugs? That doesn't sound good. Maybe I'll try again later tonight to update it. I don't know why it stopped at 92%. That doesn't sound to good, either.

haven't had any issues with my set-up ... so far anyway.well, i did have to turn my printer off and back on - but that was all, but OOTP is the only thing i've used since the update, so maybe there are other surprises waiting? ... all i know is it took forever to download and just as long to update ...

Are you talking about Windows 10 version 2004?
I have been using it since mid May without issues. |

Old as this laptop is, and running Windows 10, updates have always been nearly unseen and seamless.

Yes 2004. It stinks!!! What do they have against gamers anyway. Now I have 3 more games that won't go full screen when they did before. And one of them was made by microsoft. Idiots. 4 of my games shortcuts to launch the game where gone. I'm surprised it didn't delete them as I though that it did. 3 of those won't go full screen now. These people are retarded. Like an engine that's retarded. This was a brand new windows 10 64 bit build 1909. I'm not happy at all.

I’m running into this same problem, except mine has been stuck on 85-86% for nearly an hour. Oops, it just went all the way up to 87. I have heard that Microsoft’s quality control on updates has gone downhill like an Alpine skier. They need to be more upfront about how long these things are going to take. It may say 65% done, but it may be done in 10 minutes or it could take an hour or more. Very frustrating.

Zappa, it sounds like you've been around for a while and experienced some of the truly calamitous Windows updates of the past. When I went to Windows 10, my worst concern was not being able to refuse updates. Up to Windows 7/8, I would turn off updates altogether! Not very wise.
I had read that the updates process in Windows 10 is improved in that they roll it out in phases and monitor feedback as they go along. So far, knock on wood, I haven't had the problems that you are describing. None of which helps you, I know. I guess my purpose is to lend moral support. Here is a bit more of it: I will never click anything on this page that says "Download" or "Install." AFAIK, that "Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004" has been hanging there for months. It can stay hanging forever as far as I am concerned. Windows should be TRANSPARENT, not a feature in itself. It should do its job in the background and not be something that needs to be constantly updated aside from security requirements. For, every time somebody tweaks this or that, it may cause a problem with that or this. But such an approach wouldn't rake in the dough and justify jobs in Redmond, would it?

Thanks, Bru. That's what I installed. I just figured if I didn't do it now, it would do it anyway. I guess I could try and uninstall it and see what happens. Roll it back so to speak. But would it make it even worse?

Just finished rolling back to build 1909. Now going to check things out to see if all's ok. I noticed that the update to 2004 cleaned out all of my restore points. That was very nice of them to do that. NOT. It's like they were trying to keep me from going back. Well it's back to build 1909 and I had to set a new restore point as my other ones are all gone.

Realize, though, that I am not talking about Windows Defender antivirus updates. Those you should get regularly on auto-download. If you look at the image that I posted above, the stuff on the top, which includes antivirus updates, will happen automatically. It's the thing on the bottom for which you have some control and what I am saying is, never volunteer! ![]()

Speaking of How-To Geek, here are a couple of recent articles on the subject:
How to Roll Back Builds and Uninstall Updates on Windows 10 How to Uninstall Windows 10’s May 2020 Update A couple of interesting points: "you only have ten days after installing the update to do so. After ten days, Windows 10 will automatically delete the required files from your PC to free up space" and "note that rolling back a build is not a way to opt out of future new builds permanently. Windows 10 will automatically download and install the next major build that’s released."

I did roll it back to build 1909 and to tell you the truth, I don't like that build very much either. Build 1903 is the better of the 3 builds. It gave me way less problems. Unfortunately, that build is gone forever for me. New PC came with build 1909 and nothing to roll back to. At least with 1903, my games were all fine. All ran in full screen mode. Not anymore now.

Zappa, have you tried a complete uninstall/reinstall of the games that are giving you problems? I mean everything, including program folders, associated AppData folders, and setting files?

Yes, I have done that. And nothing worked. This screen that the game plays in is not a normal windowed screen. I'll try to describe it. It is full screen from top to bottom, but both sides have 3 inches of black on either side. The mouse pointer only works in this area. You can't move the mouse into the black it won't go there. The games play fine otherwise. I don't get it. Glad OOTP doesn't do this. I've searched on line for help and don't know of anybody else having this problem. I don't think it's the graphic card as it only does this on some games. All of these used to play in full screen mode before. Even if I go inside the game itself and check the box under graphics settings for full screen, it doesn't help. |

I found it. I found the problem. GPU scaling for my graphics card, somehow through all this windows stuff, had become disabled. I simply enabled it and tried my game and just like that full screen again. I don't no how it became disabled in the first place. I don't play around with my graphics card 'cause I'm stupid.

Something to check... look at settings / display... is the scale and layout set to 100%? Also, is the display resolution the same as the native size for your monitor? Normally, this would be 1920x1080 if you have a newer wide flatscreen.
EDIT: I was a bit late with my post but glad that you found and fixed it. |
