Too Many Shutouts on Default MLB Start?
Seems like players are in general going too long in games, but that might be my imagination. But the number of shutouts using the default settings on a current MLB season seems high.
I haven't run any tests or anything, but I'm 1/4 of the way through the season and I have 9 SHO in the league, including Marcus Stroman with 2. I think there were 19 in 2018, and 26 in 2019. I think I noticed another post with much the same conclusion earlier in the year, but I couldn't find it. So here's another. Is anyone else seeing too many shutouts? Is there a way to see how long my league's average starts are, innings wise? What can I do to cut down on the number of shutouts, if in fact they need cutting down? EDIT: I ran a couple sims, and the shutouts are a little high, compared to previous years. But it seems like the complete games are maybe a bigger issue. My last two sims hit 75 CGs on average, while 2018 had 42 CGs, and 2019 had a total of 45 CGs (I think, by manually counting, so please excuse minor errors here). Sim 4: 49 SHO, 90 CG
Sim 5: 30 SHO, 67 CG Sim 6: 43 SHO, 80 CG Sim 7: 40 SHO, 68 CG Sim 8: 30 SHO, 70 CG Sim 9: 33 SHO, 70 CG Sim 10: 41 SHO, 77 CG Sim 11: 32 SHO, 79 CG (including Greinke with 4 SHO/7 CG!) Sim 12: 36 SHO, 74 CG Sim 13: 43 SHO, 77 CG Realized that those weren't even final regular season numbers - sims 5-9 went though about 155 games, as I forgot to make the game keep running through job offer emails. Close enough though, I guess. Last edited by torpidbeaver; 05-30-2020 at 10:52 PM. |

I am seeing shutouts just about every day. I think there is a problem also.

It looks like this is a valid concern. I'm about 1/3 of the way through an AI controlled simulation of the 2020 MLB season using default settings. There are already 28 complete games across both leagues. According to Baseball Reference, last year there were a total of 45 over the whole year. So the simulation is nearly double the expected rate.

One time I added a minor league and somewhere along the way I had one minor league had a very disastrous year in which almost all the games were shut outs and around 40% of those were no hitters.
So a setting is off somewhere.
