Independent Leagues

Recently downloaded from here Stealofhome's good looking quickstart that begins in 1900 - fictional with feeders.

It has a small Independent League which doesn't trade with the main MLB structure (I checked in settings).

I have never used a structure that includes an independent league before. My question is: what is the purpose of having such an independent league?

I can only comment on the Independent leagues that you can add through the wizard for a modern mlb setup.

Indy leagues gives players some place to play, be on an active or reserve roster, and gain stats. Not only stats but they can develop. If they are on the free agent list for years then they don't gain any stats while also not developing any.

I find them very useful in a modern mlb play through. With organizations having 9 minor league teams plus all the foreign leagues, a load of players get cut and need places to play. Because no one knows who will develop into an all star.

Can you shed some detail on how you add independent leagues? I have only been able to create minor leagues that are affiliates; what I want is an unaffiliated league--for all of the reasons you cite above.

Is it a feeder league? I shied away from that because it's neither colleges nor HS nor junior colleges ...

Independent leagues aren't affiliated minor leagues or feeder leagues by default.

They are smaller financial leagues and smaller reputation leagues that operate independently just like the mlb.

The add league wizard has all of the default USA Indy leagues and 2 or 3 Asian Indy leagues. So you can use the wizard to add them. They are based in real life leagues.

In the fictional quickstart I was referring to above, the independent league is standalone and does not feed into another league (though you have the option to do this if you want to in the settings). In the QS there is a college/HS system that act as the feeders for the main major league.

You can make the independent league's reputation as high or low as you want in the Game Settings/League settings/League and Teams page for that league there is a box for reputation and choose from 0 to 10. In the QS the independent league reputation is 10 the same as the main league.

As jimmysthebestcop says, the utility of having such a standalone league is likely that it provides a place for players to play rather than just staying on the free agency list and being idle.

I recently tried to add Independent Leagues to my main Saved game. It's a Historical sim that started in 1981 and currently waiting for 1988 to begin. When I add a few of the leagues I want, they appear in my list underneath an entire copy of MLB which is in the modern day. I manually deleted every MLB team from the modern era, so I was just left with Indy Leagues listed, but every single player that was on an MLB squad was now a Free Agent. I don't want Aaron Judge or Aroldis Chapman in my 1988 season. LOL

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I don't think so. I've even started a brand new test saved game and tried creating it from the beginning year of my Historical sim.

Maybe I am wrong, but is it even possible to have a historical league with Independent leagues that all adhere to 1981, for example? I'm quite bummed about this as I would really like to expand my baseball universe for those reasons mentioned already in this thread.

You could make a separate save get your indy leagues setup exactly how you want then save as as a template. Then import the template into your main universe
