Hit By Pitch

I'm a brand new player. I set up a fictional league and started it yesterday.
5 games in, I'm seeing a ton of HBPs. One game had 5 in total - one shy of the all time major league record. One guy in the league has been hit 5 times in 5 games.
I know this sample size is tiny and it's probably just coincidence.
But I wondered if I might have done anything wrong in the set up that could cause this?

Hey there, welcome to OOTP! If you let it, you'll be stuck here forever

Firstly, double check that you're in commissioner mode (commissioner mode basically lets you edit pretty much EVERYTHING - if not, click your manager name drop-down, click manager options and then check the box saying 'commissioner mode')

When you created your league, what was the reputation set? Probably not pertinent, just out of interest as it might influence player quality.

More pressingly, go to your league name drop-down menu, click 'league settings' and then go to 'stats & AI'. What do the numbers next to the 'hit by pitches' field read?

Secondly, go to the poor sod that was drilled and press 'editor' on the tabs. Look to the right hand side of the screen - what number does it say next to 'Getting HBP (based on 550 PA'? Anything above 10 is fairly high, but definitely not impossible.

Similarly, go to the pitcher that did the dirty, click 'editor', look to the right and scroll down until you reach the pitching numbers - there'll be 'Hit Batsmen (based on 550 BF)'. Again, a number above 10 is fairly high, but highly possible.

I'm not sure what else you could've changed during the basic setup of the league, so it's probably either a bizarrely high amount, or to do with one of the factors listed above.

I would go with "tiny sample size, coincidence" myself. The guy who has been plunked 5 times in 5 games may go another 100 games without ever being drilled.

Was his name Alex Bregman or George Springer?

Thanks for this.

This is what I see:
Stats and AI HBP - 496 (of 84,294 ABs)
Guy getting hit - 12
Pitcher - 8

I played one more game and 2 guys were plunked so I simmed the season to see what happened.
There were 1686 HBPs across two 8 team leagues.

I have no idea what happened. I'll start another league today. If this one is fine then it was some bizarre user error on my part

Wow. That is a phenomenal amount of hit by pitches

If I tell you that if I look at my current league, your league is only supposed to have about 65% of the HBPs in my one (which seems reasonably combative). I am on course to maybe see 1100 HBPs this year in a THIRTY team league. You got half that again over a SIXTEEN team league

That's WILD haha

Sounds like a LTM issue. Did you autocalc before the season started to set your League Total Modifiers?

I didn't I don't think.
I went through game set up and Advanced set up without tweaking much but I didn't notice autocalc.
Maybe that's the problem.

Well, I'm at a loss.
I set up a new 16 team (2 leagues of 8) game and simmed the first season.
All stats are absolutely realistic - except HBP which ended up over 2,000 for the year.
I have no clue what I'm doing wrong. I chose 1980 settings; didn't touch HBP or any of the other numbers during set up.
I'm using real MLB teams but filling the rosters with fictional players, but that shouldn't be a problem, right?
It's a shame because everything else looks great and it must be me doing something.

I would just take a historic season like 1950, use default setting and sim a league. See what kind of job stats you have.

Good idea. I'll try that.

Edit:
Simmed 1950 out of the box with real line ups and transactions.
HBPs were fine. No problem.

So I must be doing something when I play around in Advanced set up in my league.
I'll go back over what I'm doing step-by-step with the manual and see where I'm doing something that affects HBP.

Thanks to all for the help.
